Shrapnel

When some thing explodes in real life the most danger is not the explosion it self but the shrapnel that comes from it grenades is designed to do it on purpose.

So for more realism and unpredictability have some fly out at random direction

 

Also it would most possibly will make going prone/crouched to have an even bigger use because of shrapnel.

 

You wouldn’t have to render the projectile you could simply make it a hit scan

Hey -

 

A good idea, but I was under the impression that this was already modelled into grenades, rockets, balster bombs, explosions, etc. The same for fire damage and shock damage. If not, though, then this is a good point. Perhaps one of the coders could comment?

I could see having some variable on damage depending on whether the soldier is prone or standing, but at this point prone isn't being looked at IIRC, just standing and crouching like the original. I think the current plan is to have the blast damage decrease over distance from the original blast point, and there will be an animation of the explosion, but the detail may be hard to see at that level.

I don't see there being a difference in damage between crouching and standing, but I can between prone and the other two.

Yup, prone=lying on belly. I read somewhere in the laboratory about having standing, crouching, and prone. Prone would give a higher accuracy bonus than crouching, better cover except at point blank range, but you can't move much in that position.

Well actually their is a difference.Usually the shrapnels trajectory is upwards.So even if you're croching the chance to be hit by a shrapnel is lower.

I'd have to agree with this assessment. Explosions are more of a up and out then straight out in all directions phenomenom. Specially with nades, it was a real problem with the early versions, and still can be with modern ones. Also, I have to assume that if one is knealing they expose less surface area than standing, so less a chance of taking some lead. Of course, this is simple to solve, as we can just say that all the future explosives used by aliens and humans are advanced enough to provide an even sphere of death. Its really just a development call :devillaugh: .

The lower to the ground the less chance of being hit

True, there would be less damage done between the two. Also less knockback from the blast, another thread was discussing that as well. It would be nice to see units get tossed around from grenade blasts. Battlefield 1942 does that, it's hilarious to see the enemy get thrown all over when you start tossing. Unfortunately, I'm usually the one being tossed...

That's actually a very good idea but if there's going to be soldiers getting knocked around I sure hope it looks realistic and not just the soldier getting shoved from one area right to another w/ no animations

In the prone position, though, if you wanted to model it, damage would be much greater when you were hit. Instead of a piece of shrapnel or projectile strike passing through you and hitting one organ.. it plunge into you and hit every organ :(
