GDD
heck 2/3 of the planet is water, why not some kind of boat. Could have some kind of boat defense/ destroyer type thing. Also could have some kind of boat battlescape on one of those massive oil tankers. (would explain why those prats always run aground... its the aliens MC)
Snakeman
And all this time I thought it was cause of that dude Jack Daniels Hmm, boat battlescapes, I like. Could be nice n' massive playgrounds, plus, bringing along explosives might be real bad on the tanker boats Oil rig 'scapes might be cool too. Some of those puppies got a heck of a lot of floors to 'em.
Guest alex the greater
good idea at least have a way to recover ufos that crash into the sea recovry boatit searches the seabed whith sonar and recovers the craft whith a submersable and a crane
Paladin
Yeah, well, boats are VERY expensive, but you could always rent one, I suppose... Particularly to recover a splashed UFO. Success would depend on depth, of course, and if any aliens survived the crash, like sectopods/Cyberdisks They could also be used as small mobile radars, and they'd need to come back to port every 2-3 months... But they'd be real slow compared to the aircrafts, even a very fast boat would be something like ten times slower than the skyranger... Taking a week to cross the Atlantic. Then again, a splashed UFO is not going anywhere :: [edit]How about a hydroplane?? Edited September 27, 2004 by Paladin
Astral
Or a Hovercraft, but i think that it is not very important....
SupSuper
some way to recover ufos that crash on sea is a good idea. and besides, why boats? it's the future, we have high-tech craft type things!!!
Paladin
It's the NEAR future, circa 2010, if my memory serves me right... So it's important to make it still beleivable... I'd expect we'd be at least able to recover some scraps if a UFO was shot over water... the only problem is that it might take months for boats to organise, get there, FIND it (in deepwater, it's never easy), dive down there to see what we can do, and MAYBE recover some pieces... let alone the whole thing, that would take many more months to organise... So, a specialised hovercraft would be helpful, but I doubt it would have a major impact on the game...
Snakeman
I agree it might take months of organization if this were a commercial or scientific enterprise, but this is a goverment/military kind of operation. One thing they have on their side is they benefit from knowing at least the presice coordinates of the site of a sinking from GPS tech, but your right in that the target's final resting place will undoubtedly be off course from that the deeper the water is. About organization (or ability to mobilize quickly) I'd venture greatly depends on the country handling it. Some nations' navies are not in the kind of state of readiness for example that the US or UK might be, but also from where deployments are originating. I don't know if Xenocide will eventually incorporate underwater recovery or other missions undersea, but I am at least intriqued by attacks an things on the water's surface...the stuff that could still be handled by our above ground counterparts we know so well already, on rigs or boats etc. In the meantime, I wonder if some kind of behind the scenes type of entity could attempt to salvage stuff for you in the way that you described it for whatever is submerged. Have it take time, and randomize whatever recovery benefits there are off them introducing other outcomes you can't directly control (the team was lost, they couldn't find anything, funding for their indy enterprise dried up in the third month etc.). Paladin
Hehe... Tftd Terror missions in Xenocide... Yeah, that would be fitting... If you were aliens, would you prefer to drop in the middle of a large metropolitan area? or taking on a single ship in the high seas I can see closet-phobia coming back now :crying: That said, I find it REALLy stupid that civies are still alive on a boat after the 10 hours it took the transport to get there... Either the aliens are long gone, or every civie is dead... In urban areas they could just move on, but heck... I vote for the "Behind the scenes recovery"... Plus, other UFO recoveries need to use the same kind of time and randomisation... The plane could be shot down by aliens, the trucks exposed by Conspiracy afficionados, etc Plus you might not know (and SELL) what you have until you study them... Unless you asked a guy to bring it back in the transport plane
mikker
The SkyCat is able to hover in midair, and can take massive loads. Could it fit in here? Airships? (read my other topic; war spoils collection)
Paladin
Oh, yeah, THAT... Well, aside from the fact that it looks silly, it would be slow as heck... I still much prefer to have the recovery handled "behind the scenes"...More micromanagment is only better if it gives better gameplay, and I fail to see where that will add... mikker
ok, just a suggestion BTW, i don't really think that ufos shot down over water could be recovered. We want to save something for Xenocide 2, right?
Paladin
Well, maybe they could recover something, but months later...
Tuoppi
The SkyCat was quite fast, actually... Anyways, IMO UFO:s downed over seas should be lost for good. Some reason to watch where you attack, and risk losing the chance. Underwater recovery would be a possibility in so shallow water that there is not much point in having it at all. Paladin
Hmmm, yeah, I guess it would be mostly disintegrated on impact, like an airplane...It's not the same thing than a submarine/boat that's down pretty much in one piece...
