X-com Novel

Yep, it's called X-COM UFO Defense A Novel by Diane Duane, published by Prima Publishing. ISBN: 0-7615-0235-1

Don't expect an epic that begins where the game starts and follows through to the end. It is however an entertaining short story following the exploits of base commander Jonelle Barrett in setting up a base in Switzerland. Only to find it's been built right next to an alien base.

There aren't any in-depth explanations of what's what and what's not, and I guess in a way that helps the flow of the story, but leaves those who aren't familiar with X-Com universe in the dark. Also the X-Com visualised in the novel is of a much larger scale operation than what we are familiar with in the game.

Still, as I said, an entertaining read. Look it up in your local library if you get a chance.

It's not wise to pre-judge. Go look it up in your local library, or look for a copy in a second hand store. In fact, track down the Chapter 1 teaser that was published on the net. Most people think it's the best part of the book.

Just to reiterate: don't go in expecting an epic. Approach it as a short story. It's not the same as the super secret organisation that lives and breaths in my own mind, but it's still an entertaining read.

I have the novel and have read it as well. Think of it as a long piece of fan-fiction. My only gripe is that it has a lot of inconsistencies when compared against the game. (I guess that's the scientist in me coming out). If you like fan-fic, do give it a read.

My local library didn't have this book so I ended up getting it off Amazon.com for dirt cheap. You can also find it on eBay. I wouldn't worry about the condition of the book too much - most are in excellent condition. ;)

I read this as well and liked it, although its been a lotta years now since and don't remember much beyond that the commander was a woman and her base was in the Alps.

I liked that it didn't follow the game's time line ending with Cydonia. I had hoped there'd be more books to follow.
