Hopefully more details are released soon.

I expect something like Bioshock.

So... I wonder how long before No Mutons Allowed. :D

An Xcom FPS? How original! <_< And naturally, it's outsourced to a bunch of nobodies. Duke Nukem Forever, eat your heart out.

someone sent me a link on facebook about the new game and I was like OMGYESYESYES.
But then I read what it actually was so I came here to share my disappointment with you guys. :/

if it has a system like VATS from fallout3 it wouldnt be so bad though I suppose.. might even allow strategy to actually happen in the FPS.
Me: Magic Eight Ball, do alien beings inhabit the earth?

Eight Ball: For the love of God, would you stop jiggling me! How can I predict the future when I'm about to throw up?!

In the very least is should be like SWAT4 or something similar. As in: squad based. Also, AI has to be incredible and console games rarely have that commodity.

Something like Operation Flashpoint meets Rainbow Six could be acceptable - especially if the player would be a squad leader or platoon leader. I doubt there are any chances for it, though.

Still, even if it would be like I have said, I'd prefer if it wouldn't be called X-Com. X-Com was a tactical wargame with strong tabletop roots, not a tactical shooter and tactical shooters already existed back then.

What's the deal with using the names of old games from completely different genres for new FPS games?
It's like they are making these games for people who hated the original games.

In case of X-Com, it would be a very short and painful experience ^_^ . Also, X-Com didn't have a really lovable setting. It was very generic. Our world + UFOs + an organisation that fights them.
On the other hand X-Com 3...

Info from first look in CanardPC:

I'm reading the article right now so this will be short :

- No world map : There's a USA map (with a 50s' style) for selecting the missions.
- Research & production : yes.
- Base management : yes.
- Team management : yes.
- Choice of the next missions : yes.
- No control of your teammate during the mission (in the demo, this may change)

It seems like you can goof around in your base between the mission (in first person view).

EDIT :

- The demo was running on an XBox360.
- You play as the chief of operation of the base between the mission.
- The choice of the played mission will impact the game.
- In the demo, lots of area of the base were off limits.
- During the missions you can take photos (research ?).
- The game is due for release in a little more than a year.

The magazine does in fact have an article on the game, but I am still trying to get confirmation that the information itself is legitimate. Please take this with a grain of salt until I can confirm it.

looks to me like xcom franchise will no longer be the xcom we have come to love. Doesnt mean this game wont be worth playing. It just means that it in no way will satisfy the needs of the original xcom fans

ufo2-extraterrestrials

will hopefully keep us happy

"Franchise" is such an ugly word...
It represents all that is wrong with the gaming industry nowadays. Like it's a Mc Donalds or something like that.

Do you remember the times when both gamers and developers were using gaming terms like series, setting, etc. not business terms?
When they start talking in business terms like "franchises" and "IP" it's sure that the series they are talking about are going to get raped and next games will be for the lowest common denominator.

Got to say, when I first saw the article and the screenshots, it confirmed my belief that god hates us all. Such a tragedy for X-COM to turn into this.

Weird style of graphics, nothing tactical, just another plain old FPS offering "immersion", not even single sectoid.

I too missed a few heart beats when I heard it is an FPS. I don't expect much from this. However, I also came across the following: http://www.ufo2extraterrestrials.com/

I read mixed reviews about their first game (even with the BMan mod). However, I have great hopes for this prequel.

I hope they make it like Natural Selection but on a bigger scale! Base commander to help setup and build base (voted in or best player of private server) then the rest of the players go out and shoot it out FPS style but with the commander on overwatch for them.

The guys working on this game are supposed to be hard core xcom fans so let see what they can do first before we rake their bodies over the hot coals of heck. :D

I reread that article and it seems they changed "studios" so the hardcore xcom fan is not in charge:

While Irrational Games head Ken Levine last year professed his admiration for the franchise, it seems his studio will not be in charge of the reboot. 2K Marin--made up of studios in Novato, California, and Canberra, Australia--will be developing the game, with the Australian offices taking the lead on the project. 2K Marin's last project was the critically well-received BioShock 2, which has now shipped more than 3 million units worldwide.

Frankly, seeing a developer use a world "franchise" is a sign that they aren't real fans of a game. It's a term for businessmen, not for gamers or developers. It has no use for gamers, especially that gameplay can be replicated and improved without buying any "franchises".

At least they called it "XCOM" and not "X-COM"...

I'm sooo pissed by today's tendency to make games with titles like "Prince of Persia", "Alone in the Dark" or "Medal of Honor", without a subtitle. It's horribly confusing, and makes me think they want to make people forget about the old games...

Those black blobs are probably the cousins of the micronoid aggregates from xcom3.

Strange thing is that the xcom game states that the FBI are doing the investigations.

I'm starting to wonder if these guys are simply trolling and getting a kick from provoking angry answers.
Seriously, I don't believe that anyone can be so retarded.

I don't want to sound like I'm somehow sticking up for 2K or this new XCOM game for the sake of it. After all, for all we know, the game might suck! I'm simply trying to point out that getting angry at the game's partial change of genre, on principal (since we know so little about it!), as though this were still 1994, isn't going to get us anywhere.

What? What 1994? Is this guy retarded or something? Seriously, what is he talking about? He's trying to prove that tactical wargames are outdated? Seriously, this guy has to be trolling, otherwise he's so retarded that he shouldn't be able to form a coherent sentence LOL .
Oh wait <_< .

Anyway, wasn't UFO: Afterlight released, like in 2007? Wasn't UFO: Extraterrestrials released in 2007 too? Isn't, there, like UFO: Extraterrestrials II in works? So, what 1994?
Seriously, does that guy suffer from some kind of a brain damage?

Also, principle, what principle?
Did that guy think that X-Com has some kind of a sensible setting that totally isn't so generic that it can be copied by several developers?

Not to mention that he completely ignores the fact that there are several specialised publishers that publish mostly wargames.

I think our memories of the original X-Com, at least where they're involved in affecting our expectations for a modern remake, are like the old saying: if you really love them, you have to let them go.

What remake? It's a completely different game.

Anyway, it's funny when journalist whores start marketing games like that. The truth is that fanbases usually quickly stop giving a damn about retarded "remakes".
The whole Fallout 3 rage was because of constant trolling by journalist whores and Bethesda fans. Mostly because people had to refute retarded arguments like that tens, hundreds or even thousands of times.

And, a new game called "Xenonauts":
http://kotaku.com/55...s-not-a-shooter

So, what are the chances that it's not going to suck?
From what I've seen, every complete remake managed to screw something important up.

I liked Fallout 3, the worst thing about this new Xcom is that it aint Xcom
Its a completely different game and should have been a different IP...
The only think it has in common with Xcom is that it is about fighting aliens, and the story is not even related to the original Xcom thats what ruins it for me.

I would have been okay with an fps if it at least was set in the same world and continues that story.

Ok, so Xwhatever is now a division of the FBI. Which means they're US based. And they fight black ink-like enemies. Notice how I wrote "Xwhatever" earlier. Couse that's what Mulder's dad was doing in his time. Even the time period fits. Call it X-files! What's wrong with developers today?

Just found out about this. Saw the trailer for it, am truly disappointed indeed. Shocking to think they can even conceive of doing this. Looks like they've crossed XCOM 3 with X files, via 2001 a space odyessy and mashed it all up completely. Don't get the poor graphics either, not that I'm a graphics person, but if you're going to make a new game with FPS focus and not look at the graphics as a top priority.

Overall, I wonder where the heck this will fit into the scheme of things.

More like another crappy cover shooter with plasma-proof walls where you can see targets through walls because of magical aiming mode and where you have lots of HP.
Just see 10:20+. It's not even a good tactical shooter.

No, thanks I'll stay with Operation Flashpoint.
