I Need An Update

Well, you could read and find out yourself. If you cannot find anything, start making assumptions the project is dead due to lack of activity from developers. Needing a reason of inactivity doesn't really serve a resolution though.

Check the my latest posts in this thread if you are that lazy:

As for you "needing" an update...you won't get one anytime soon. Unless you somehow picked up C++ gracefully, miraculously. So stop asking, it's just utter spam.

Well I figured half the reason was due to the fact that the actual codebase was indecipherable to all except those who have since moved on.

If I know correctly the last developer with a codebase knowing was nachtwolf (maybe I'm wrong) - does someone know if he is still on board? Or maybe know previous developers instead?

I think it was several years ago that I decided to take on the documentation for this project and did precisely dick of it. I've just now managed to get a new computer and install XCom again, and lo and behold, it seems this place has undied a death. Somebody fill me in please?

Nice you are back - the documentation may improve faster now (I hope :) ).

the hostility displayed in the post above is part of the reason the developers have all run off.

no kidding. anytime someone new enters the community with a question or a suggestion that, god forbid, has already been made, they are shot down so rudely.

  • 4 weeks later...

Well, as a game developer (obviously not this project), I found it rude of someone putting "I need an update" as the title of the thread who doesn't even have the slightest knowledge of how a project progresses. I'm sure core developers ran off because of a community issue. Yup, that must be it. They cared so much they forgot c++...

The sad fact is, experienced programmers disappeared due to lack of interest (to some, there are more interesting projects out there worth developing) and lack of time (from what I heard, Serge now works on a well known handheld device called Nokia). So if you still think making graphics, music, audio, stories, add-ons, and other unneeded arts makes you a thriving part of UFO2000, or any other coded project, then wake up. UFO2000 already has these things (and doesn't require some). If you still don't believe me, you could always attempt to push forward the c++ code base yourself and see where it takes it. Or you could take a crash course on Game Development at your nearest college / book store.

And for the record, core developers went MIA as of follows:

2000-2001 Alexander Ivanov aka Sanami (founder)

2002-2006 Serge (started new branch)

2003?-2005 Twilight Owl

2006-???? Nachtwolf

You could blame me, but I doubt that will get you anywhere.

Then please point to me at a recent unnecessary reply of mine so I can properly apologize or defend myself of why I answered the way I did.

To inexperienced programmers, yes. To experienced, no, just annoying to look at all the lack of OOP structure. And note an experienced programmer usually has a little more than 2 years on their belt of previous projects in a similar field. For example, Serge was excellent at debugging and bug prevention because he worked for a Anti-Virus company for over 5 or so years.

Firstly, Ignore my above post, it was written out of spite. no one is to blame for the stall, people just outgrow projects. You definately could be a lot more accommodating to others however be it by posting usefull stuff or just leaving people to find out for themselves

The fact that you have replied to this topic was redundant. If you didnt have anything constructive to say, why post at all? I sure didnt and just served to agitate the situation furthur.

Ill leave my post there as im being an even bigger troll myself but it pisses me off when you lash out at people who ask a question or simply want to know whats happening. Notice how Nachtowolf or Serge or Sanami dont come barrelling in to wage holy war against the unwashed masses when somone asks for an update? he has better things to do. So do you Kratos and so do i.

Lets you and me get on with our prospective stuff with some dignity eh? Leave the poo Flinging for Telecom

I agree. That is why I hope someone more experienced than me will fork it. You'll see a lot of replies in the future from me saying "This project is dead. If you think you're capable/interested, feel free to go ahead and fork it."

I pointed out what was going on didn't I? I think I'll consider what you just said here void.

I manage my own time, I manage my own responses. But you are right there, it is rather a waste of time telling children to go read up, or use their own head for that matter, on an already answered question.

No, the fact that I'm now replying shows that I'm being redundant. I just provided an MIA status of the core developers and gave an idea of how long someone can expect to feel like an adequate programmer for this project.

If you have past issues with me, you can PM me.
