Mortars: You could have a two man team or tank platform which stays near the ship and launches a volley of Mortars (say three) when ordered by a team mate at the front by radio (all using TU's) this could be if an alien or concentration of them are hangiing around a building. This would have to be only in outdoor missions of course. you would have to wait till the end of the turn or longer for the mortars to come down on the target as a mortar stays airborne for up to three minutes!
Barret Sniper team: The Barret rifle is a US sniper gun used to take out human and even small vehicle targets at super long range with a 0.5 inch round, as used on warplanes! this massive gun has a special gas recoil tip at the muzzle to prevent the soldier firing it from breaking his shoulder with the force of the recoil! You could have a two man team set up in an upstairs window somewhere on the battlescape and take out Aliens with great accuracy and effect at long range. I found the gun at the following web page: http://www.gastonglo...a57dd2f8f2c#M82
see humans do have cool weapons
Shields: Soldiers could carry riot type shields into buildings so when you open a door and find an alien standing behind it on reaction fire his volley is absorbed by the shield saving the soldier to return fire.
Combination guns: Shotgun/flamethrower, Assault rifle/grenade launcher (ala Aliens II), Plasma gun/Tranquliser dart gun etc etc
Flying suits with equipment pods to clip night vision goggles medipacks etc etc, you don't have pockets on metal suits
A button in battle to undo the last turn where you just got blasted by the muton hiding round the corner: This saves endless reloads - admit it we all cheat!

Some were bugs, but anyway, maybe some of the ones we like could be handled differently for example, to reduce clickage or to make it work such as the often mentioned ground inventory tab thing when there's too much stuff on the ground. Being able to see the alien's inventory under MC to disarm them etc.

Extra-heavy artillery does not exactly fits X-Com operations style, and for minor artillery support it's just as likely to be missiles. Perhaps with semiactive (or remote) guidance by requesting party when it approaches target. But this have to be bulky and expensive. Note that this approach have no advantages but caliber over handheld/tripod squad launcher. While have lots of limitations.Mortars: You could have a two man team or tank platform which stays near the ship
This can be generalized. The same happens when one asks Army/Police perimeter guards to help with fire at specific target.when ordered by a team mate at the front by radio (all using TU's)
That's very outdated. Though they were in the first ranks, now lots of high-caliber rifles (and carbines) was made here and there. In .50'', 12.7 mm, 14.5, 15.2, whatever. Just for example.Barret Sniper team: The Barret rifle is a US sniper gun
And of course, teams dealing with armored targets would tend to prefer higher calibers. Both for long-range and assault weapons (like 12 cal shotguns with slugs).
Moreover, there was some interesting attempts to make hand cannon - e.g. Maadi-Griffin 30mm capable to shoot Warthog's antitank round. Though even this is not a replace for old good grenade launchers anyway.

Not very usable. Save grenade / RAW launcher, of course.Combination guns: Shotgun/flamethrower, Assault rifle/grenade launcher (ala Aliens II), Plasma gun/Tranquliser dart gun etc etc
Of course, so what ? Shelds are disposable. It stops few blasts, then wielder (and the rest of assault team) stuffs opponent with LMG bursts or shotgun slugs, and takes new shield for next break-in. It's better than repair of armor (let alone affected body parts) anyway. Of course, it should be made specifically to take surface heat-impacts, not the same as common "riot shield". Though even those could be used to deal with unarmed monsters like Chryssalid.Riot shields would be transmogrified into slush under a barrage of plasma.
Two words: "Called shot".Being able to see the alien's inventory under MC to disarm them etc.
