CTD - Psionic Amplifier

X-NET:

Psi-Amp:

First Draft:

After examining the ethereal’s anatomy we have found a jelly like organism that reacts strongly to neural activity but doesn’t seem to be intelligent. This unusual material amplifies brain waves and focuses them towards a point, causing neural shock to the target. This can cause a stunning effect, disorientation or in rare cases it stops the brain functioning for a period of time, enabling the attacker to control the targets actions using its mind.

This would be an invaluable resource for our forces, unfortunately we are still unsure of its affects on the human anatomy. Therefore, using existing neural technology we have developed the Psi-Amp. Rather than having the organism in the users body, it will be contained in a hand held weapon with an array to focus the waves. It receives brain waves via digital pulses from a microchip planted on the back of the neck. This weapon is incredibly useful but its users must be trained in its use well, must be in view of his/her target and must use caution in using it as it is still highly experimental.

I am in the middle of some more ideas and a second draft so if anyone has any ideas :)

I can't recall whether the psi amp was used by the aliens as well? If it's found at crash sites, then the aliens use it as well.

The idea sounds good, perhaps the substance somehow 'inverts' alpha waves or something, cancelling the targets own brain waves? Then they are left with just their primitive mind functioning, which in a combat situation causes the various symptoms.

Thanks for the input!

I mentioned the ethereals by name because i thought the psi amp was only available once you capture a live ethereal and research it.

I was aiming more to the fact that the weapon causes a stunning affect (which can cause higher brain functions to stop) but thanks for the idea.

And i totally forget about the natural ability bit, Thanx.

Ive improved it a little bit. should i keep the background first bit of background info about the cold war etc.

anything else i should add, otherwise this will be my final draft.

Optional ***During the cold war the knowledge on mind bending techniques radically increased due to large amounts of government funding. The aim of these secret black projects was mainly intelligence based, psychic spies would use their psychic abilities to find vital information such as enemy capabilities, weapons sites and other classified information that would be otherwise impossible to retrieve. Although some amazing intelligence was gathered much of it was inaccurate and totally incorrect, yet there was no denying that in some remarkable cases the data provided was certainly not correct by chance. Unfortunately, research into this phenomenon did not progress much further and funding was totally cut with improvements in espionage techniques. It seemed clear that the human race possesses some untapped ability, yet we have no method of using it effectively.

****

However, after further examining the ethereal’s anatomy we have found a jelly like organism that reacts strongly to neural activity but doesn’t seem to be intelligent. This unusual material amplifies brain waves and emits them to its surroundings, causing severe neural shock to any biological matter it encounters.

Rather than having the organism in the users body, it will be contained in a hand held weapon with a series of spikes acting as an array to focus the otherwise unstable waves. It receives brain waves via digital pulses from a microchip planted on the back of the neck. After preliminary experiments with this device we have found that people have varying natural psychic ability, for some less able users the introduction of this new ‘sense’ will most definitely cause excessive emotional and mental stress. This weapon is incredibly useful but its users must be trained in its use well, must be in view of his/her target and must use caution in using it as it is still highly experimental.

As I mentioned in the PM, I'd focus more on the device and how it functions than on past events per se. I suggest you say the liquid enhances/amplifies the user's brain waves, and the spikes coming out focus those waves into a beam. When that beam intersects another being's brain waves it disrupts their own patterns, forcing the brain to function at a basic, animalistic stage.

what about changing "etherial" to "psionically active aliens' "?

DOES NO BODY LISTEN TO ME! :cussing:

I said ETHEREAL because you need to capture an ETHEREAL to be able to research the PSI AMP.

and i have said that the substance amplifies the brainwaves and the spikes focus it and that on impact with a target it stops the brain functioning properly.

The first bit (the bit with the *s and the word Optional around it) is optional.

In other words, it wont be thare if you dont want it to.

sorry for being a moron right now but its genetic and im a little stressed.

phew.

I like your idea of making the psi weaker.

However, in the original game, you could get psi in the first month if you were lucky (You must capture either a Sectoid Leader, Sectoid Commander, or Any etherial.)

Its ok, everyone is a moron sometimes, especially me! :P

I always thought you had to research an ethereal first? in that case sorry my mistake.

I have added specifications (i stupidly forgot them) but i wont bother typing them up into this reply (pointless).

Ill post my rtf later, but at the mo i have 3 pieces of course work due in for tomorrow.

A word springs to mind.

it sounds like clucking bell.

i have to write 6 pages about dickens' xmas carol, there is no god!

Thats the best fluff text I've ever seen! And on the not of the cold war research, I seem to remember that the United States had a "psychic corp" thats job was to get "intellegence" on the Soviets from hardened facilities, but the government "accidentally" leaked stuff about them to the Soviets and the whole thing was just to freak out the Soviets. I remember reading about it 5 years ago in Popular Science or Mechanics or something like that...

Is Elysians the name we are using now?

dont sound as good sorry.

and why do we have to change ethereals? i see other games with the same name. or maybe we could just spell it wrong on purpose eg etherials

no one would care or notice and no copyrights broken.

Elysians simply sucks

The word ethereal is OK to use, but to make a floating, emaciated, heavily robed alien that uses telepathic powers AND is called Ethereal, then you're treading on someone's intellectual property. We do need to use alternate names for these guys, but I thought they were being called Ammonites. Some people like one over the other, so perhaps we can stick with Ammonite until we have a vote if one is needed? Just remember to place it in [brackets], so it's easy to replace later on.

I will use the [brackets] but wasn't thaere an alien called an ammonite in the origional game already. it sounds familiar.

i reckon on etherael. looks the same but it isn't mwa ha ha :D

Just trying to reinstall Wordpad after i 'accidently' corrupted the code.

ill PM the final soon.

Here's the current version of the text typd out, rtf couldn't be uploaded with this post. This will also be linked into the CT list. People can keep the ideas flowing here, if you think of something major or cool, but I guess for now we should focus on texts that haven't been addressed first and come back to this later? Here's the text, some formatting will be off due to posting:

I don't really like the "jelly like organism" It seems too much like an organic piece of equipment, which I hate. Organic stuff like that has been done to death a million times before, in movies and games. I'm just sick of it.

Anyway, I couldn't upload my autocannon CTD.rtf either? I wonder if someone was fiddleing with the forum settings?

I know wot you mean, for example apoc used it a little excessively

I like this biological idea because its easy and it tie in with apoc as an added bonus (if we ever do an apoc remake).

and anyways i thought the [ethereals/ elysians] or wotever had MC skill since always, otherwise they cant survive, unless they are implants.

(which would be stupid, i dont see a race evolving in such a way it would just not be able to move!, especially if they have the ability to Gen Modify themselves!)

thanx for the input but i think ill stick to it for know

I don't mind the idea of a symbiote giving the aliens psionic abilities...but I agree with Cpl. that the human version shouldn't use it. Just on the practical side, where do the engineers get the blobs? Do they dig them out of the skulls of dead Ammonites (why isn't the blob dead too?) or grow them in the lab (yeah..psionic alien parasites being grown across the hall from the living quarters..that'll go over well with the soldiers). Do you need to have them in stock to build a psi amp?

I think it's better to just say something about monitoring the blobs' psionic emissions (the player will already have the psi lab at this point) and having a device that can generate a crude version, limited to panic and MC (but not telepathy like the aliens have).

I thought u couldn't produce the Psi Amp

but now i realise you can :(

Ok i have an idea!

the blobby stuff is not an organism it is an enzyme (my origional idea but i put the word organism in which is wrong)

the enzymelike blobby stuff acts like a catalyst (as they do) and amplifies the waves. This blobby stuff is produced by the aliens' organs (maybe the liver (do they have livers)) but can be produced using a complex but relatively easy biochemical process.

How about that. Man why are you guys so touchy about any piece of technology being slightly organic.

<_<

But if you look at apoc (please dont shout at me) the aliens are inhabited by the blobby stuff as described here. so i thought why not...

thanks 4 that.

i thought i had changed that bit about being in sight already. i must have changed it in the mind probe rtf instead. doh!

and thanks 4 reminding me about the stun, the last x com i played was apoc so it kinda stuck in my head.

i want to change a tiny bit more in addition to your changes but i want to get mind probe, sectoid, motion scanner and mind shield up to date first.

i would appreciate any input.

As a little notice, we're looking for replacement names for this item and others for Xenocide, check out the thread in the CT meeting room forum for the various threads. We'd like to settle some names sooner rather than later, so we don't have to bother with brackets and old X-Com references and all that.

To keep consistency, we’ll use “Psionic” for the abilities (or just “psi”).

PSIONIC AMPLIFIER

X-Net://Pegasus.net/Equipment/Psionic Amplifier

The Psionic Amplifier allows the user to control an enemy's mind, or panic an enemy unit. To use this device with any real chance of success, extensive mental training is required to prepare a Human mind for the shock of encountering, and then attacking an Alien mind. Certain individuals are found to be more psionically capable, however, after evaluation at a Psionic Training Facility. These individuals seem to have a much higher psi talent than most other individuals, and show promise if we continue research into the psionic realm of science.

During the cold war the knowledge on mind-bending techniques radically increased due to large amounts of government funding. The aim of these secret black projects was mainly intelligence-based, where psychic spies would use their abilities to find vital information such as enemy capabilities, weapons sites and other classified information that would be otherwise irretrievable. Although most project achieved some degree of success, in most cases the information retrieved proved to be completely inaccurate an incorrect, there were, however, few cases in which the data retrieved was accurate enough to prove valuable. Unfortunately, research into this phenomenon did not progress much further and funding was totally cut in most projects, as the scientists felt they were stuck in a dead end. It seemed clear that the Human race possessed some untapped ability, yet we had no method of using it effectively.

Third sentence was rewritten as suggested. Fourth was rewritten as well at the end as it didn’t seem plausible to me either. Fixed last sentence; it started in past then it went to present.

However, after further examination of certain 'psionically active' Aliens we have found an unusual type of enzyme secreted by these that reacts strongly to neural activity. This unusual substance amplifies brain waves, emits them to its surroundings, and can cause severe neural shock to any biological matter it encounters. This can cause a stunning effect, disorientation or in rare cases it stops the brain functioning for a period of time, enabling the attacker to control the targets actions using its mind.

The enzyme is produced by these Cloaks and high ranking Greys, I don’t see the need of introducing a new symbiotic creature, doing so would include possibly an entry on that creature, or an explanation on what the heck is it. (Hmmm, why is it that low rank Greys do not produce this enzyme?, does military rank in any way affect their body?, or maybe leaders and commanders are modified to produce the enzyme? We should mention it)

Fixed a coma in the second sentence, “and” was repetitive with your fix in “and can cause”. You are right, material means (to me at least) as a solid.

This would be an invaluable resource for our forces and this neural enzyme can be synthesized easily using a quick biochemical process. Unfortunately, we are still unsure of its affects on the human anatomy. Therefore, using existing neural technology, we have developed the Psionic Amplifier. Rather than harboring a potentially hazardous enzyme within the user's body, it will be contained inside a hand-held weapon with an array of neural transceivers to focus the otherwise diffused waves. It receives the user’s brain waves via digital pulses from a microchip implanted on the back of the neck. After preliminary experiments with this device, we have found that for those untrained users and those with low psionic capabilities, the introduction of this new ‘sense’ will most definitely cause excessive emotional and mental stress. This device is incredibly useful, but its users must be well-trained in its use, be in visual range of their target, and must use caution in using it as it is still highly experimental.

Depending on how the X-Corps is portrayed, you can make them unethical (…anatomy, since tests on human subjects have been inconclusive) or nice (…anatomy, since we have few willing to volunteer for such tests).  In several other entries I’ve read, the X-Corps slant seems to be a bit on the unethical side.
I’m not sure yet, I’ve always thought that as they are fighting for the very existence of our species, ethics could be cast aside in some occasions (check Alien Breeding, we had a little talk about it). We’ll talk about it later. Enzymes are “synthesized” not “created”, they already exist, we synthesize them.
This seems a bit weird: did humans possess the technology all along?  Recommend mentioning something about Alien technology, knowledge, or techniques.

Maybe it’s talking about all the technology developed during the cold war, even if it was kinda failure.

Rewrote the part of preliminary experiments, in the first paragraph it’s already stated that there are individuals of varying degrees of psionic powers, so now saying that preliminary reports say that there are, is kinda contradictory.
