Shiv
It's weird, it's sporadic, and it sucks. Apoc sometimes crashes just after a mission (when I get back to cityscape view). All this blue texted blurb comes on the screen, Apoc doesn't respond, and I have to alt-tab out to close it. Solmetimes it completely locks up my computer and I have to do a hard reboot (and we all know how fun THOSE are for your machine). I've tried running it in compatability mode for Win98, next time I play I'll try Win95 but don't think that'll help. I don't use DOSBox because that kills the sound and the mouse speed so I just run VDMS sound in the background and use that. Anyone else had this problem before and, better yet, know how to resolve it? I'll get a picture of it next time it happens if I can. Don't know how much it locks up the keyboard (apparently not a lot if I can alt tab) so I should be able to prntscrn it.
glen_es
I'm getting this error, too. The game runs fine, mouse is fast, graphics are good. Every so often though, after a tactical mission, the game crashes with what appears to be some kind of memory problem. A memory dump is displayed on the screen. I have to hit CRTL ALT DELETE to bring up XP task mgr and close the game. I run the game again and am fine for several more missions then another crash after I return to cityscape from a mission. I'm running with VDMS and have set to ON all of the following for xcomapoc.exe:Run in 256 colors, 640 x 480 resolution, Disable Visual Themes, Turn off advanced text Services. Any help is appreciated. EDIT error is DOS / 4GW Professional error (2001) exception 0dh general protection fault at 2FF:0000313C .. and then a screen full more of hex memory settings. sharaphnell
Well I had to find another version so I downloaded one from illegal sources and it works creamy now. The start up screen is different though.

ratta
If your game crashes (at tactical..) at the moment the score was calculated and displayed, but the "promotions" aren't made (The OK-button and promotions are not shown on the screen) and the DOSBOX shows "ILLIGAL READ AT (Some HEX-Adress) or the VDMS window doesn't react, maybe i have some kind of "workaround" for you. I was playing the xcom series since the start of TFTD every now and then. Now with a win2k system and Dosbox (and now with VDMS) I occured the error that after the battle is won and the score is calculated...but there is no Button "OK" to get back to the City map.BUT It only seem to occur at "Hard" level(Since I've W2K). I have already solved the game with my current configuration in "medium" ...(just for info) . Now to the Workaround:My Idea was simply to prevent the Agents to get promoted. (I want simply to go on playing ) -Save the game befor the last alien is killed.- open the "TACTGAME.05" (as example) with a Hex editor- search for the Name of every agent involved in this cleaning action- at the offset of 36 (Hex...well...maybe 38...not shure how the offset works ) is the number of aliens killed by this agent recorded. Set it to 00 for every agent and no one will be promoted (And noone will be degraded ) - save the changes- load the saved game, kill the last Alien, and the Game will switch to the city map as usual after the score is displayed.
