Some Cool Ufo2000 Screenshots Are Needed

We need some cool looking screenshots to attract more users :) They should be done using a new free graphics set ('Moon Base' tileset). Preferably the screenshots should also look good when heavily scaled down. I have made some screenshot for http://sourceforge.net/projects/ufo2000 but a better screenshot would be welcome.

this is Lunar moon base (by nappes) with tron tiles. Ive basically borrowed the map files - we still only have one real usable free terrain atm, moonbase - Tron is finished but need mapping, the reason i pic of it in game is that it gives more of a range to screens (IE two completely different maps)

PS: hope you dont mind nappes, it wont be released like this so its just a test terrain

PPS: i added a watermark too - just cause i can

2Kratos:

Looks very good, and having screenshot without minimap as it looks better is a very good idea indeed =b But still it would be better not to use any sprites from X-COM in our primary screenshots (sourceforge is all about open source and free software, so it is better to have only our own graphics on a screenshot to follow the spirit of free development). But I see the problem, we don't have anything looking like an alien in the default beta installer distribution :) Maybe Sporb's Zombie could be used for such role now: http://www.strategycore.co.uk/forums/index...?showtopic=5072

2Sporb:

Variety is good for those who are bored with 'normal' maps, but such screenshot might also scare away the users who did not see the game before as it looks too exotic :)

is this meant to be a single image to represent the entire game or a scrapbook of images? if its a scrap book, i cant find a reason for not including other terrains (we could use prospective terrains that are in development etc - like grasslands and praps cristal palace too), if its a single image then i agree. Tron is hardly everyones idea of the ultimate level.

A range of terrain would be a good idea to show players the veriety on offer. A single image of a single level might also scare off players. Theres nothing wrong with moon terrain but its based on the moon - lots of grey and not much by way of objects and colour variation.

Thanks Kratos, updated screenshot on sourceforge project page. Check:

http://ufo2000.sourceforge.net

http://sourceforge.net/projects/ufo2000

http://sourceforge.net/project/screenshots...?group_id=23295

Sourceforge allows to upload up to 6 screenshots and shows the image that was last updated on the project page. I have also added 2 more screenshots with mission planner and soldier editing screens, so now we have 3 screenshots total. I increased brightness somewhat for mission planner and editing screen pictures, otherwise they looked too bad on small pictures. We can still add 3 more screenshots, what would you suggest? Maybe the server chat screen? Main menu screen? Another battlescape screenshot with a different terrain? Tron? Or we should not bother and those 3 screenshots are enough for now?

edit:: as for scrapbook of images, ufo2000 map depot provides lots of them: http://area51.xcomufo.com/depot2.htm :)

I hate the fact of not representing the new units that are now existant which were derived from the original xcom game (floaters, snakemen, etc.). Let alone the acknowledgement of the other graphics of Xcom. But I guess that isn't an option.

Reserve the screenshot slots for now and check this topic for the reasons:

Using units from xcom might be ok, but it might be a bad idea as well. Everything depends on xcom copyright holders. For example you can remember an old story when Blizzard requested to shut down FreeCraft open source project. On the other hand there are lots of open source games which have an option for use of graphics and other resources from the commercial games and they do not have any problems (they do not contain proprietary resources within distribution just like ufo2000 and it is up to user to get the needed data files). I believe that using proprietary resources in open source games in such a way is considered fair use. But in order to avoid getting into any trouble, it is best to keep the usage of proprietary resources at minimum, even on screenshots. The Gallop brothers know about ufo2000 existence and do not mind it, but they are the developers, the owner of x-com games is some company and nobody knows for sure which one (there were people trying to investigate this, but nobody got a clear official response). As we do not have an official written permission allowing to use the data files from x-com, we need to be cautious.

But if anybody thinks that I'm just too paranoid, he is free to create his own distribution of ufo2000 packaged with any files he considers are ok and putting it for download on his website. We just stay unrelated and will not take any responsibility :)

Screenshots can be updated or replaced any time we decide to do this :)

i looked thru the current map depo maps and all of them rely on Xcom graphics. We only have one real ufo2000 terrain - moonbase. All our terrain is belong to somone else.

All it needs to do is allow you to place mock tiles with appropriate tile indexes (not the actual tiles, just the tile graphic or even a layer of text blocks with an index inside - we dont even need a graphical one yet - just somthing easier to use thn the current method) in a grid and save out as an LUA since all the tiles attributres are controlled via the tileset LUA - im no programmer but couldnt somone just cludge one togeather? even in somthing like Java. Give me a map editor and ill give you 3 terrains ready for use.

Incidentally, what happened to all the other developers we assimilated recently?

You can always use the new tiles with the old tools (PCK View and Map View). Simply take the images from the .lua, convert them to .bmp and replace the images on some of the old .pck files (maintaining the same order as in the .lua). Use the altered files in Map View to make the maps. It means some work, but it can be done.

  • 2 weeks later...
Conversion ufo2000 tileset -> x-com tileset can be performed automatically. If I find some time, I might add a new flag to ufo2000.ini for doing this (the flag for performing the operation opposite to CONVERT_XCOM_DATA).
