Why No Counter-attack?

Recommended Posts

Ok, this is my first post, but I love the series, so I thought I'd throw in my 2 cents worth.

The first 10 or 20 battles I ever got into way back when X-COM first came out I specifically remember leaving a squad of 2 or 4 guys behind to protect my skyranger. I figured that the aliens would probably notice the big noisy flying thingie landing next to their burnt out husk of a ship, and take defensive action, like blowing it up. I would if I was in their position. But those attacks never materialized, and my valient defenders had nothing to do. :zzzzz:

Anyone else find that odd? Why didn't the aliens ever storm my ship and try to get away?

Also, why didn't the aliens ever land another ship as reinforcements to help out the downed ship? Is life so cheap for them? (Well, probably, but...) Even if the aliens don't care about the survivors, why not try to wipe out them pesky humans while they are otherwise occupied? Especially if the ship goes down close to a base where they could scramble reinforcements quickly. Wouldn't that be a surprise, having 20 more aliens show up in full battle gear just as you are searching for that final alien?

First they don't try to take the ship because it's far less superior than their own spacecraft they are flying...second they probably would have no clue how to fly the strange Noisy thingie...the aliens are focusing all their attention on fixing their own ship to get it operational again to get the heck out of there...Which they do if you've ever shot down an alien craft and left it there for too long...

Another reason they may not be coming for the aircraft is their tactics of fighting...not everyone believes that your best defense is a good offense...as far as I've seen the aliens do very well w/ the "turtling" technique which may be the best tactic for them seeing as how us humans are always on the offensive (mainly cause we have to or the battle would never end)...

Now the landing another ship and reinforcements is a great idea...but if we did implement it in a v.1+ I hope we make it scarse...I know by the end of some battles I'm as tired as the soldiers fighting in it just because of the length of it...but good idea none the less Edited by revenant4

Well, once in one of my games, I attacked a snakeman terrorship. Once I sent half of my squad (5 +1 laser tank) out into the countryside to kill snakes, a chryssalid runs up my ramp and impregnates 2 of my men. The rest are killed by the zombies :(.

Revenant brings up a great point, the aliens are more like turtlers who hide in their ships behind corners. :0

  • 5 months later...
I figure if I was those aliens (which I may very well be), and I knew all hope was lost.. I'd atleast try to damage their ship to incapacitate it, that way it'd take alot longer for your men to get back home (hitch-hiking and what have you), and making a better oppertunity for the aliens to attack your base while your guys and jogging home from a couple continents away. Tho ofcourse you should be able to fly over and pick them up, but as long as it involves irritating the player it's all good.

Just an idea. ;)

edit: I guess my first post being reviving a half year old thread is good in its ways... whatever. Edited by jdan
