Tuoppi
It would be nice to have some variation in clothing depending on climate, and maybe lighting conditions. Original T-shirts looked a bit stupid on the north pole, and jungle camouflage should be something green. Nothing too big, initially a different texture on basic armor should look good, don't know how to deal with advanced amors though, do they repaint them for every mission? [Blehm 98]
i see your point, soldiers would freeze to death in seconds at antarctica if they had anything less than power suits or flying suits
Tuoppi
I didn't mean actually that... it is basically possible to fight in arctic in t-shirt. Fights are usually over in less than 10 minutes, and human can cope that time in underwear, -30´c in fairly still air. I have tried, and it was rather unpleasant, but did not cause any injuries. Truly extreme conditions are a different story, and if there is any time to prepare, abovementioned is extremely stupid. My biggest point was mostly that camouflaging is totally diferent in various environments. A arctic white/grey camo would be quite a target in jungle night, and a black nightcamo would show up to low orbit from deep fresh snow. Some troops paint their vehicles 4 times a year with difefrent tone of colour to adjust to changing seasons, and have about 10 different outfits for various terrains. And X-Com is the best unit. mikker
agree. Just a diffrent texture set, depending on locations. So if it's in the jungle the soldiers go into battle with jungle camo. In the arctic, it's snow camo. In Terror sites it's gray camo. In anywhere else, it's just normal clothing.
Snakeman
It would be neat to have different textured armor to match the environments you'd fight in you could select through and apply to your armors. However maybe all they need to do rather than have the player do this manually, is have five or six environment variant textures (with perhaps a couple more "mixed" varieties for those terrains that are a little border line), so that, when a map loads with a particular textrue(s), your appropriate armor "look" gets loaded along with it before battle. For functionality, I'm not even sure that the different alien race's vision recognizes camoflage or is hindered by it...Certainly not any Psi races at any rate as their vision has probably taken a back seat evolutionary speaking, than their brain development. For the other alien races that do have good vision and poor/no Psi, perhaps some value can then be perscribed to camoflaged armor in a later version (something along the lines of whether your seen or not in what would normally be their sphere of line of sight had you been wearing no camoflage...then just augmenting that sphere of sight just as they probably already do with "cover"...only without cover and factoring in if your moving or not). Initially though, I certainly see the cosmetic appeal to at least looking like your surrounding terrain somewhat, so long as the player can still find their units cause that's the important thing
mikker
I agree it would happen manually. But i don't think that the aliens should have their stat affected by it. Instead a little eyecandy.
