Ideal
Thanks to the advice on this board and on the main site X-COM runs great on my machine. However I have a problem saving my game and I can't seem to find anyone else with this problem. I am running Windows XP Pro (with a fast processor), using the fix file to disable direct draw and I am using NTFS on my hard drives. What happens is I go to save my game from the geo-scape screen or battle screen and it lets me type in a name. I hit enter and I am back at the previous screen. However if I go to save again or load my game the entries are all blank! I've checked the directory and X-COM isn't creating a save dir or any save files at all. Does anyone have any idea what could be going on here? I have made sure the X-COM game directories are all not set to "read only" anymore. I have also tried enabling Win 95/98/ME support for the exe file to no effect.
Guest stewart
Do you have ANY saved games @ all? If so, try copying that saved game directory to the other ones then save over-top of them; it's worth a shot anyway.
Ideal
No luck there either. The game simply refuses to save the game. TFTD does the same thing. The strangest part is that when I go to save a second time after already "fake saving" the name of the last save comes up when I click on the save slot. The game seems to save the name of the save, then not display it until trying to save again.
Guest stewart
You manually moved the files right? Using dos heck or explorer or whatever-the-heck XP has?
Ideal
Well I installed it to a directory called X-Com Collectors Edition, and then it has UFO and TFTD directories after that. Could it be that the install program is not installing the games with the correct directories? As for moving files I haven't moved anything from where they were installed... does that help? (XP doesn't really have much of DOS, so for moving files I would use Explorer)
Guest stewart
Okay, first, is there @ least one "good" saved game?
Ideal
Sorry for being so confusing No, there are no save files at all. Basically I just installed yesterday after not playing for about 5 years so this is all fresh.
Guest bao
Is you xcom directory got a folder named "Game_1". This should be the save folder for save 1 and if that folder doesn't exist, create one and you should have no problem. Create "Game_2".... "Game_10" for the rest of the save entry slot. Guest stewart
Find a saved game on internet, or PM Mr. M. D. Gibson Esq. (he may have one). Use that as your basis and see how it goes.
Ideal
Thanks for the help! Actually I got it to work a short time later after my last post. A friend provided me with DOS X-COM and I simply copied over the savegame dir to where I had installed the collectors edition. That fixed everything and it works great now. Not sure why it isn't installing with those directories, but simply creating them seems to fix this issue. So if anyone else runs into this bizarre problem, that should fix it!
