Weird Crash During Mission

I'm using Windows XP, but I'm running X-Com Apocalypse on a Windows 98 virtual machine under Virtual PC. It all went smoothly until Nanotech's Corporate HQ was under alien attack. I get to insert all my soldiers, but when the tactical mission starts, it crashes back to the virtual windows98 and I get the error message "program caused an illegal operation bla bla bla". Sometimes I can play the mission for 5-10 seconds before it happens.

Does anyone know what could cause this? It has never happened with any other mission before, and I tried initiating another mission elsewhere to see if my savegame was damaged, but that went without any problems. After that I tried investigating the Corporate HQ again and crashed. Seems like some sort of graphics bug, perhaps?

Ok, found out some more about my problem.

The crash has nothing to do with Nanotech HQ, only what type of building it is (duh), and this is the type of building causing the crash:

Other buildings of this type also causes the crash.

Also, for some reason, win98 has started to inform me that the program needs to run in MS-DOS instead of saying that it has performed an illegal operation as the error message now.

I just tried copying the whole maps-directory from the CD to my installation folder, and what do you know.. it worked! Even though I did a full 200mb install. Oh well, I'm off to save Nanotech from horror and despair! :D :D
