Possible X-com Util Battlescape Error: Can't Use Avengers?

Not sure if this is X-Com's fault, X-Com Util's fault, my fault, my ancient W98 machines fault, or George W. Bush's fault. :D

 

I am playing with UFO version 1.4 on a W98 machine. I have modified XComUtil.cfg so that the Skyranger, Interceptor etc are all exactly like they are in the unmodified version of the game. I'm almost into April 2000 in my game and I have had no unusual problems before now. NB: I am pretty sure that I did NOT make any changes to the Avenger!

 

I scanned UFOPaedia's list of known bugs and saw nothing like this:

 

When an Avenger lands, either with 14 troops, 14 troops + 1 HWP, or 14 troops + 3 HWPs, Battlescape crashes immediately. When it should go to the equippy screen I just get a black screen with the mouse pointer stuck in the upper left corner. The music is playing however.

 

At first I thought it was a corrupted save file but this doesn't seem to be the case. Skyrangers are still fine, but any Avenger landing next to an alien ship (whether it is crashed or not) always results in the black screen like I have described. 100% of the time. Interestingly enough, I can have my Avengers assault alien bases with no probs.

 

Anyone have any ideas?

It is possible that somehow your avenger map files got corrupted. Do you have a clean install of the game or better yet, the installation CD?

 

I would recommend that you copy the MAPS\avenger.map file from the clean install or the CD and replace the same file in your current game. Just for good measure, do the same for the ROUTES\avenger.rmp file.

I was already thinking that it might have something to do with the .map file. You see, back when I installed XComUtils, I deleted those six XComUtil .map files to prevent using the high performance interceptors like troop transports... seemed to work too.... :blush1: at least as far as the interceptors were concerned (I never build Lightnings or Firestorms).

 

Of course this is not necessary. In XcomUtil.cfg you simply edit the craft values to have the default values, which are kindly provided a screen or so earlier...

 

And so, just a moment ago, I copied the interceptor, firestorm and avenger map files (along with their TFTD clones) to my UFO directory and re-installed XcomUtil. I haven't actually tried it yet but I am assuming that this will fix it.

 

 

EDIT: Tried it, and that was the problem. It works fine now. And my MiGs are still high-performance interceptors, and my Skyranger-class assault shuttles still have no weapons hardpoints! :D

However your avenger's back door does not animate. You can walk right through it but it does block shots.

 

Scott made this change to keep the aliens from trashing you before you could get the troops down the ramp. It should be posible to use a clean installs avenger files to restore original functionality.

I don't remember if that also makes you need to change the xcomutil.cfg file so unit placement doesn't cause issues.
