My vote goes for desert missions. They're quite simple (mostly plain areas) without those stupid farmhouses to search in, or forest/jungle with tons of stuff to hide behind. I don't have to worry about civies like in terror sites. Alien Base missions are dark and have tight corridors. X-Com bases are my second fav missions. Mars would be 3rd cos it's like desert but at night.

My favorites are forest missions, decent cover, no barns to search, and I just liked the trees back when it came out :)

I like City missions, obviously terror, because of the larger space to play with. I love sending my troops exploring the shops, there is always a Cyberdisk waiting somewhere, usually camped right outside the Skyranger, and I do love it when they are in full view of the Skyranger in the first move. Ahh, listen to those bugs die as it explodes right next to them :devillaugh:

Shanty town, is that a new mapset you created? If it's compatabile with the CE and won't mess up my game, I'm willing to give it a whirl.

About Stew's editor:

Mall map

Looked most interesting. I don't like shanty town cos it has tons of those barns. :puke: (Or am I messing something and was it else map?)

The original shanty town had nothing but those double sheds then I added a couple other things. The point of shanty town is not the look but the play. It's like doing a bug hunt in a medaeval villige or something. LOTS of places for the bugs to hide.

Field of wheat I like for the look.

The mall map because of the look of the parking lot.

I don't like shanty town cos there are too many places for bugs to hide... I prefer snow & desert maps. :P

I prefer the urban environments since they offer a tactical challenge: take out the alien invaders while minimizing civilian and X-com casualties.

Plus the added factor of terrorists makes it all the more interesting.

What I meant was, you have to be careful in urban areas, especially with destructive weaponry like grenades. If it's just an UFO, you can tear the place up, it's not like you'll kill any civilians inthe process.

You know? ;)

I like the desert, no where to hide you alien scum! :D

Also, i would like to see better urban environments... the cities sucked on the terror missions, hardly any time spend inside... mostly running from building to building. I would like to see a sky scraper mission for sure, multilevel building with cramped quarters.

On farm levels, i would just turn the buildings into more crop space. i hated searching buildings, and found it much easier to pummel it to the ground from the outside in.

about city maps: who here has ever had a park as terror site? I once was called to Rome, and apparently my Skyranger set down in the middle of a deserted park, not a building in sight, only some grass, flowers, a bench and a road :)

That may actually be one of my special maps there kiddo. Did you ever use my editor and look at urban map "Central Park". If this is what happened ALL your urban maps will be this until you change it.

@ Stewart: Shantytown is a nice map to play, if only there were some more barn types. All those uniform buildings... maybe you should

Originally it was all the double sheds but I did throw in a few other things to break up the monotony. I didn't want to put any bigger buildings in as it was supposed to be a shanty town. Within the editor you can fix that, though. Select the shanty town map then go to the individual map element section and throw in a barn or two.

Hey post a screen shot.

*I thought all the aliens were there except for terror weapons (reapers, cyberdisks, ...). Do they require a specific map to be present or something?

I think each map element may have alien/terrorist/citizen/combination starting points defined. The park map elements it would seem /happen/ to not have terrorist spots. . . . but I'm guessing.

it's not savanna, which looks quite poor in top down view, but the standard jungle map as you can read below the image :) .

I forget, /standard or default/ jungle is THAT open?!?!?!

Have you checked out the (I believe I called it) "Deep dark Jungle" now THAT has vegitation in it.

Edit: Hey I checked out images Thanks! I can see why you said what you said about savannah but it should have /some/ tress in it your example /happens/ to have none. It looks better with tree's.

If you're bored one day you should try doing some again with bigger maps and smaller UFO's but these images do give an idea about the maps (Shanty Town is good for example)

I added all the jungle maps for comparison to the previous post. Thanks for telling that about Savanna, I'll retake the screenshot soon. (I obviously didn't double-check every map to make sure I wasn't dealing with an exception  ). Well, bigger maps will be hard. These were taking directly from the game, and I would have to do a lot by hand to give a view of the ENTIRE map. (screenshot, scroll, another screenshot, ..., and then combinig thosex54 times :whatwhat: )
