Crash -- Mapcode Error

I'm running XCOM gold with the xcom util patch under windows xp.

 

 

The error: upon trying to engage a downed enemy craft, after I say "ok" to the mission briefing, it errors out before getting to the combat map. The error is:

 

Error Code 0

Too many mapcodes loaded! terminate!

 

The command-line batchfile's reported error (also recorded in xcomutil.log) is:

Read failure on MISSDAT\OBPOSREF.DAT

 

This is hardly surprising -- since the obposref.dat file is a 0 k empty file (presumably because of the mapcode error which prevented its creation)

 

 

The same error appears (using the same saved game) with different Util settings/options (including vanilla minimal changes) as well as in an unmodified xcom gold (without the util running).

 

It also appears when I back up and run from earlier saved games (though, in these cases, the alien ship causing the problem was already detected and being tracked - if that makes a difference).

 

 

I've had no trouble with other battles under the same configuration --- but apparently there's something about this particular one which causes the mapcode overflow whenever it tries to generate the battlefield map.

 

Can anyone help? Is there a workaround?
