Radar

I think one large radar in the beginning and one hyperwave decoder at the end/base is enough, but I'm not sure...

The range of the large and small radar is listed in the ufopedia in nautical miles, but how much that is ingame, I don't know...

The range of the facilities can be found in their UFOpaedia write-ups. I believe Large/Long Range radars can "see" farther than Small/SHort Range Radars.

Once you've buit a HWD you need no other radar facility at a base since it's detection is 100% and it's range at least as good as anything else.

Some people like to use multiple radar systems to increase their chance of detection. When I used to do this I built one large and several small as space permitted, thinking that a UFO would not remain in the long range area for long.

Now, I build a small radar immediately off the lift so I have eyes within 12 days. Once my single large is built, I demolish the small to help create a choke point for resisting base invasions. With one large radar, you will miss the occasional UFO, but not that many, really.

If that one UFO is a terrorship, well as I've said before people are too concerned over the effects of terror missions.

If it's an infiltration, in my own experience you get countries back, but as far as I know, I'm the only one who has.

So the point of multiple radars is to catch the occasional serious infiltration attempt by the bugs. If however you've got a factory building laser cannons around the clock, then who cares.

Once you've got your HWD then there's nothing left to worry about.

HWD are the way to go :D

I had to reload when I wanted to go from small to HWD, I did not see any UFOs. By June (on beginner) I had seen 6 terror sites and 6 UFOs. hmmm, I was losing points hand over fist, so I went back a couple of months, and built a large radar. Hey presto, UFOs!

Try to capture a snakeman navigator ASAP, so you can research him for the HWD.  Otherwise your just wasting time and money building radars at all your bases, which will become obsolete anyway.

Any navigator will do.

And where it is going. And what it is going to do there. :)

Edit: I must say that what you have done to your artificial research tree is pretty intresting stew. :)

Mark0 - I put one HWD at each base, which should be plenty.  With radar, even large ones, you would need several to come anywhere close to how good the HWDs actually are.

You don't need radar with the Hyper Wave do ya? I thought it is the X-Com equivilent of the Enigma, every ship's communications can be interpreted and a position pinpointed.

Jim69 - Once I have HWDs I scrap all radars. I'm not convinced that you only need one HWD, so I prefer to have one at each base. I consider the HWD one of my biggest priorities early in the game, just because of how much it costs and long it takes to build any radars.

You have to have one at each base. Otherwise those areas not covered by HWD have no additional mission info and the odds of detection are lower than the HWD.

i remember i used to leave my wide radar and have a HWD in my main base.

but in the other bases i hwhen i used to build them iallways built HWD and that was it.

i have no clue why i did that

Stew is right, 1 HWD is enaugh for each base and building only 1 HWD in 1 base wont decode for the whole world but only around your base.

I have heard that HWDs dont detect extreamly close UFOs... and keeping a small radar helps detect everything...

not true. i've detected UFOs damn close to my base only with a HWD.

Can we have aa grpahical display of radar coverage on the geoscape? Ie a little toggle so we can turn it on and see exactly where we cannt see aliens.

Another thing that would be nice is the eventual radar coverage based upon existing radar technology displayed as one is picking where to put a base. ie a circle is projected onto the geoscape around the cursor when building a new base. one can then figure out to the millimetre where to place it. this idea makes sense, since sites are surveyed before bases are placed in real life, and I imagine the same goes for radar sites. you figure out the best place to put something before spending billions of dollars on it.

I don't think you can. Maybe Xenocide will have this (hint).
