What About Pre-battle Briefing?

Sounds good, and little work for the CTD dept.

Quite a lot for everyone else, but hey, they need something to do :D

Seriously though, I thought this was standard, as it was on the original

How about its a text briefing (like Call of Duty) that tells you about what mission it is (UFO Assault, Terror Mission, Special Mission), what terrain (and 1 tip for the terrain type, the tip cycles through a bunch) type, and what type of UFO (and information and tip if you've researched the UFO). Then a click to start, instead of an automatic start.

that shouldn't be too complicated. Maybe diffrent for each type UFO?

"XC-1 have successfully breached the alien defence systems and have entered the alien base. The soldiers have now cleaned the upper levels, and must now find the command center in the base and destroy it to prevent future activity from the base. Enviroment and lighting is very diffrent then from above ground, and also because of the ammount of aliens, extreme caution is required"

"Your interceptors have downed an alien craft. Aliens will likely be milling around the crash site, attempting to defend and repair their ship. X-Corps agents must move in an neutralize all alien forces. Extreme caution is advised throughout the entire mission area. Good luck."

There shouldn't be any hints about a ufo, as it's unknown what's inside. If the ufo could be figured out after several missions and the inside is always the same, then the player can figure that out IMO.

well, the text might deflect the size of it. I mean, "take down a massive sized alien ufo" wouldn't go right into a scout.

I say, moderator? Can you move this to the CT area and split it into different threads for each breifing? Then we can get to work. ^_^

<date> <time>

<ground conditions?> <light level?>

Incoming Message from X-com Command:

Commander,

your Hawks have been successful in downing an <aproximate size> alien vessel over <country>. We must now follow through with a decisive ground operation that will maximise our current strategic advantage. Your mission is to lead a combat squad of X-corp operatives into the region to investigate the crash site. Expect <terrain> terrain. Satalites and flyovers have detected a number of life forms in the imeadiate area of the craft. It is unknown how many may be inside the vessel itself. Your objectives are as follows:

- The dis-incentivisation of all aliens in the vicinity.

- The capture of all alien technology found in the vicinity.

- The retreval of the vessel itself and everything within.

- The minimisation of X-corp casualties and losses.

Good luck,

Command out.

Some missions could have a time limit.

"The craft has detected a surge building up in there reactors. The self-destruct sequence has been initiated, you have between 25 and 35 turns to finish the mission or to pull out."

But really, would the aliens be stupid enough to blow up their own ship and get stranded in the middle of France or Finland, get their little alien butts frozen off in the Antarctic, or make roast Grey for some hungry X-CORPS operatives in the Sahara?

Inspiration.. just love that feeling.

I think so!! Because they rather die than let you take there technology.

If they are dead without destroying all of their tech then you could just pick it up anyway.  And if they can't destroy everything they use, and would rather die than let you have it, you can't shoot down vessels for recovery missions.

they might not always do it (reaction time, they-wont-get-it-if-we-defend-etc.), and might only do it later in game, and more often on harder levels.

I always thought that as soon as it was shot down they did destroy it and then waited for extraction. In the original if you go to a UFO thats literally just been downed it will be, on average, more intact than one you have left for a while. The longer you leave it, the more destroyed it is when you get there.

i thought we used the "repair and protect" theory for crash sites. as in, the aliens attempted to repair the ufo and while that was done they protected the ufo from any hostile forces as to not let them get their technology. thus why the crash site eventually disappeared when the ufo was fully repaired.

another theory (still allowing crash sites to exist) would be for the aliens of the crashed ufo to wait for extraction and until then stop any hostile forces from taking possession of their technology. when a craft arrived to extract them, they (or the craft) would destroy the remains of the crash site and be extracted.
