A Tribute To The Terror

Recommended Posts

Not sure if this is the proper forum to post this type of topic, however, I'm sure it will find it's proper location if it's not.

Some friends and I were big TFTD fans, ‘in the day’. A number of months ago we made the decision to pay a ‘Tribute to the Terror’ as a part of a Neverwinter Nights Persistent World. This is a Private run Neverwinter Nights server, but we’re going to open it up to some members of the public and decided to offer it up first to the loyal following of Xcom’ers. Information about out little project can be found at the following link.

http://estuary.zftp.com/estuaryX/index.htm

Just click the ‘Estuary X-force’ link, and read though some of the news. It should give you a pretty good Idea of what has been done. This isn’t joke, it a fairly serious attempt to pay the old game some due. (It works, it’s currently running, if you’re looking to toast some Aquatoids with a Torpedo Launcher, it’s all possible and functional.) Using a bunch of the NWN community available graphics, The Estuary Group, additionally armed with the TFTD Hint guide, was able to reproduce most of the creatures and about 95% of the weapons used in that game. There is a Crafting system in NWN, so you have to make your weapons, ammo, and armor (and it’s not easy….learn to respect those engineers)

If you’re interested in participating you can send an e-mail to [email protected] . Please don’t download the content from the web site; it won’t do you any good with out the passwords to connect to our servers. We’re actually planning on running an introductory session (or one shot adventure) on June 5th, 9:00pm EST. So it’s a good time to get involved.

Some Background: Estuary is a Privately run Neverwinter Night persistent world, it’s free, and it runs 24 hours a day. The PW is a growing project; we’ve been running a server for almost 2 years. Estuary is around a year old. Most of the people contributing to the Estuary Group Code were game programmers from the early 80’s, so I’d say we aren’t hacks…but the truth is…in those days we were all hacks because there were no manuals on how to make graphic move. Our intention is to release the Estuary TFTD object to the Open Neverwinter Community; once we’re sure Atari (who I guess owns the right now) won’t find some reason to make our life miserable.

I’m not familiar with all the XCOM Forum, so if you read this and there is another place it should be posted, please feel free to pass the word on.

wow, sounds really cool to me. tftd in nwn should be nice, all i have to do is find the NWN and download... *GASP* A 330MB FILE?!?!?

DAMN THAT'S BIG! i doubt i'll be able to try it out since the download's too big for me, but i guess the ones who can can probably tell me if it's good or not. i like how you reproduced TFTD's armours with NWN's armour pieces. anyways, maybe you can get some more screenies, the website doesn't really have much and i want to see more ;)

oh, and about where you should post, i guess the TFTD general forum would be more correct but it's ok to put it here too :)

I considered buying NWN, but then I decided that I'd rather have Total Annhilation, Jagged Alliance 2 Wildfire, and Baldur's gate 1 for the same price instead.

But I've got a question, is it true that NWN can import characters from other D&D games such as Baldur's gate 2? I heard that somewhere, but didn't know if it was true.

i can't believe so many people don't have NWN! anyways, i think i'll be able to play after all since i can always ask a friend of mine with a different ISP to download the files for me :)

cpl. facehugger - iirc, yes, neverwinter nights can import characters from baldur's gate 2 since they both use the same system (and both games are by bioware).

mikker - what is PTP? this is the NWN we're talking about: http://nwn.bioware.com/

Edit2: Nope. Just checked, can't import old characters. There goes my chance to have a level 50 paladin with +7 Carsomyr and immunity to +1 weapons. :D

Edit: Mikker, no NWN doesn't have any monthly fees. You pay for the game, and that's that. (Well...You still have DSL bills like I do, but those are seperate. :P)

Mustang, You'll need to contact me directly at [email protected], I check the mail daily. I'll get you the passwords and proper IP adderss to connect to Estuary. If your e-mail is listed on the forum I'll contact you directly.

The server is NOT publicly listed, as we would like to keep some control over the number of players, and keep the quality of the group high.

Other info for the other e-mails:

NWN is a real time, on-line multi-player game. NO COST...you cannot charge for running a nwn server (Part of license). The servers and connections cost all come out of my pocket.

No Expansions are necessary at this time.

However, Hak pack's are necessary, as things like Guns and Torpedo launchers are NOT standard for most D&D games. At least not any I've played. These files are quite large, 330meg compressed contains 9 different hak's, music and stuff. We will occasionally require downloading or updating of new haks, but we are trying to keep it to a minimum.

Sorry for the delay in responding, I expected estuarygroup e-mail. I try to keep tabs on this forum.

For those people who are thinking about the download:

It is worth the 330mb, it isn't only TFTD too, you can go through swamps (which actually are hard to get out of) and you get a room in a dormitory to store your things that only YOU can get at. It also has a wonderful tradeskill system. But I found that it is too hard to get money.

4.5 out of 5

I just got NWN, but I'd like to learn the game before I get involved in something as...prestigious as this. I must say that it's great of you to attempt this!

Any chance of getting an Xcom Ufo defense/Enemy Unknown version? :D

Well...a few of my friend were into Xcom and more of them got into TFTD. We pretty much found them to be the same game with some plot differences. Our Tribute has nothing to do with those plots, Estuary's alien plot will evolve over time.

Currently, TFTD is a good fit for Estuary because it keeps all the firearms underwater, and keeps the fantasy aspect above water.

Mustang made a positve comment about Estuary, but, it's just scratching the surface, as Estuary is still scratching the surface of the Large amount of Hak pack graphics we've added in. We have about 15% of the land mass built rght now, and are planning.. a moutain area, a desert area, a Japanese area, 2 different under mountain areas, and a deep woods area. Not to mention many underwater areas, ships and underwater colonies all for TFTD. We've been working on it for a year, and it's projected to run in development for likely a few more years.

I've attached a sneak peek at the interior of a scout ship, with a few inhabitants moveing about.....better keep low....wouldn't want them to see ya.

Cpl. Facehugger, don't be shy. Just join in, the people on the server are friendly, and will help you. Estuary, has a lot that is very differnt things from the majoriy of public NWN severs and there is alot to learn.

It will take you a bit to get to underwater. Unless you make one of the June 12th or 19th sessions. at 9:00pm EST. (we canceled the June 5th, as I've been to busy to prep the adventures.

I'll be running adventures, that are........TFTD related. So if you want to get your feet wet, literally, it would be a good time to jump in and meet some other players.

If you want to join, send an e-mail to [email protected] and I'll ship you all the passwords and IP addresses. If you can install TeamSpeak, as it will be much easier to train you with voice, over typing.

What I mean is that I have to learn the interface before I can hope to actually play the game effectively. :P It is just so complicated, but I think i'm getting it.

Now I've just got to update! :D

Mustang has the right links. YOUR BANNED does not look good.

I don't have anyone banned on the Estuary Server setup, it must be the central Game server.

I'm not sure where you bought your game, but the key might have been blocked.

Was it a used game or a new one?

Yes, it was used. Was too expensive on stores :P

Guess I'll have to go and annoy someone, and I guess I can't find a valid CDkey easily -_-

  • 1 month later...

Yes they are typically on between 8:00pm-12:00pm, on some week nights. We're trying to get some more One-Shot Adventues arranged in September, to pick up the player count.

We're trying to get some more TFTD areas in place, and I've been moving, so things are a little slow right now on the server.

Okay, I've been swamped with work the past few weeks, but I haven't forgotten about this! :P

I like it, it's fun. My only qualm is with the manufacturing items part. It's really hard to manufacture TFTD stuff, and nobody seems to be around during the only time I get on. :P

Nevermind the fact that I can't seem to get to the TFTD stages. :)

I can let you borrow my aquatic rebreather and I'll show you where the tftd training area is, if you want

What time do you normally get on?

Well, I have an aquatic rebreather. You see, I participated in one of the one shot adventures back a few months ago. My only problem is that I can't find where the TFTD areas are. :P I mean, there's the training one that I visited, but that's it. :P
