There's already a project on GotDotNet trying to do that using XNA's predecessor Managed Direct X (MDX). XNA has been suggested but half the programming team run Linux or Mac, so XNA is not an option for us.
Saving the world from the scum of the universe is hard work. Especially when you have to create the scum to begin with.
