How does it work?
Does replacement text have to be the same length as the original or just separated by dots?
I looked around and couldn't find anything, since this is my first time editing X-Com I don't want to risk trial and error.

Tested it. Looks like names can be as long as you like, just separated by dots.

Strings in english.dat and english2.dat are basically ordinary text separated by 0's. That is to say, hex value 0x0. Not to be confused with a space, which has a hex value of 0x32.
