One thing which can add a nice little effect to the battlescape would be ladders, less space consuming then stairs but more time consuming, and if you think its hard to program ive already though of a solution.
Simply use the same principle of a grav-lift, but instead of showing a gravlift tile, you have a laddertile, the ladder tile should also have the characterisitc of a wooden fence tile (unable to climb but able to shoot through), and the TU cost of climbing up a ladder will be more then going up a gravlift, for climbing down though there should be less TU cost as they can just slide down.
Also you should be able to climb over fences and other things which are half a tile high, and mabye make it possible to climb over whole fences/walls but for a higher TU cost. If you can climb onto a stack of hay why not over a fence.
