I've been cleaning the model further, I think it's about ready to start reducing polygons. The issues I'm still working on mainly concern the joints: there were none present between lower legs and feet, and between upper legs and body. I'm not sure if you modeled them and they disappeared through exporting, or if you did not yet have those, but anyway, I'm still trying to get something there. I've got something preliminary, but it looks rather odd... although we probably won't get so close to it ingame :)

What I wanted to know now, is it easier to animate the model with the joints and legs separated, or do they need to be joined into one object?

The joints in the concept (and what I added) were just discs. If the disc thing isn't working out for you, just put in whatever you think is appropriate. The important thing is that the legs look insect like and somewhat more inorganic than the other units.
