CTD - Plasma Pistol Clip

Recommended Posts

Today has been an unproductive day at work thanks to this project...actually, it's been a productive day for the project thanks to me having nothing to do at work.

Plasma pistol clip. Like it, hate it, whatever...just talk about it.

i still don't know what the research tree will look like. I suppose it will stick close to the X-com one, but i think that the clip should come AFTER the gun, like the gauss tech in TFTD.

The text is ok, pretty basic, and it would properly be tiring of hearing of the same injection devises used with the 3 weapons, so others would have to come up. But ít sounds fine, no problem there.

could you make it a bit more interesting? It reminds me of science. Understandable, but boring(I normally like science, just not life science). And maybe something more understandable. Instead of this gel and heavy water mixing stuff, maybe a powerful xenium reaction releases a powerful mini explosion, causing the heavy water to dissipate into plasma, which is then discharged by another smaller xenium reaction

I am stuck with mixing two gels as the source of the reaction. The mechanism of the reaction itself is, however, up for grabs. Currently I've got this, though with some recent research into plasma, I think I can change some stuff around a little. I could, as per your suggestion, have the Xenium "explode" or at least release a whole bunch of energy when bombarded by, say, RF instead of being a critical mass type reaction. Then I could have only heavy water in one tank, which would match the "plasma weapons" thread better.

I'll work on it a little bit more as far as readability and enjoyment. Perhaps I'll just make it much shorter (spreading the technical reaction of the plasma out over all three clips, say). I'm just trying to avoid "you put it in the gun, and it shoots" and I really can't think of anything to say apart from describing the reaction. If you folks can, please mention specific ideas or suggestions. Thanks for the replies.

And yes, I'm working on the sentence regarding the fact that researching the clip is necessary for full functionality of the weapon. I have an idea (perhaps v1+) for fixing it properly, but I'll see what can be done in the meantime.

Nice write up!

Here's my contribution. I have altered the language a little and changed the end part to fluff text feel free to disregard/re-rewrite/whatever

"...our Head chemical researcher William Heoung is resigning from head of Plasma Division today citing "personal reasons". His resignation comes as a suprise since it only just follows increadible breakthroughs with plasma technology, particularly plasma ammunition. As a collegue and a valuable member of X-corps he will be sorely missed. Rumour has it that he has already recieved several major job offers from other organisation. We hope he has the good sense to remain discreet..."

Report filed by Section 6 Department head

The plasma pistol clip is a relatively simple piece of technology. In both mechanical and electrical terms it is easy to produce and use. However the chemistry contained within, is more complicated. Each alien weapon fires an optimized type of ammunition, and so the clip relies on a highly balanced set of chemical and physical reactions.

Within the clip are two compartments, effectively small pressurised tanks, that hold the reacting ingrediants. The first tank holds a gel-like mixture containing highly fractured Xenium. It also contains iron and uranium, along with traces of several other elements. The other tank contains heavy water. It should be noted that both containers are kept highly isolated to prevent malfunction and the risk to user saftey is low.

When the two ingredients are mixed, and a high-frequency pulsed EM stimulus applied, the Xenium reacts violently in a manner best described as an explosion. The energy released in the reaction is sufficient to cause fusion of the deuterium atoms in the heavy water; a chain reaction that releases even more energy and superheats the mixture. The result, contained by magnetic fields, is plasma – an ionic, electrically conductive gas. The resulting burst, directed by the weapon, is similar to ball of lighting.

The mixture for this particular clip seems to emphasize speed of reaction rather than high energy release, since it is designed for use in the relatively small generation chamber of the plasma pistol. It is also engineered so that the amount of plasma present can be very small and still maintain a reaction.

"Dr. William Heoung was found dead in his appartment yesterday, in Hong Kong. Dr. Heoung was know to have been working with a government organisation doing extremely valuable research regarding the growing alien threat. His death comes just a weeks after his resignation for personal reasons. Police say that the cause of death is, as yet, unknown but that they are not treating it as suspicious."

perhaps one half of the fluff oculd go in the plasma pistol ctd (just a thought)

Thank you MagicAndy! I particularly like the way you phrase the optimization of ammunition types...you said it pretty much exactly like I was thinking it, but for some reason couldn't write. I really like the idea of switching the fluff texts around...the only problem (and believe me this is coming up all the freaking time) is that you don't "have" to research the pistol before the clip. I think everyone does, but unless we change the tech tree slightly (which has been discussed) it is not necessarily the case. I think perhaps the best place to put the second part is in one of the fancy pop-up-accessories-that-appear-when-conditions-are-met sort of windows. As they were discussed, they are to add a sort of immersive feel, as if you are browsing a database of files...I think a news article regarding the end of a previous scientist meets that description perfectly. Again thanks, and let's see what other people think.

Attached (hopefully) is the newest version, which is actually just proofread/slightly revised MagicAndy work.

cool, i'm going to suggest that the second fluff text goes in the heavy plasma rifle CTD

since this would have nice "two parter" element to it

part from that great! :D

The usual stuff: Red text indicates additions, orange text indicates deletions, and blue text indicates comments or suggestions.

Added [brackets] are not denoted.

Since this CT is basically a carbon-copy of the plasma rifle clip, I’m copying and pasting the relevant parts from that text.

Proofreading Round 1

[PLASMA PISTOL] CLIP

X-Net://Pegasus.net/Ammo/[Plasma Pistol] Clip

The [plasma pistol] clip is a relatively simple piece of technology. In is relatively straightforward in its construction; from both a mechanical and electrical terms viewpoint, it is easy rather simple to reproduce and use. However, the chemistry contained within is considerably more complicated. Each Alien plasma weapon design fires an its own specialized optimized type of ammunition, and their respective clips rely on separately balanced sets so the clip relies on a highly balanced set of chemical and physical reactions. The [plasma pistol] clip's contents appear to be optimized primarily for rapid rates of fire.

Within the [plasma pistol] clip are two compartments that hold the reacting ingredients reactants. The first tank compartment contains holds a gel-like mixture containing highly fractured Xenium,. It also includes iron, and uranium, along with traces and trace amounts of several other elements, while the. The other tank compartment contains heavy water. It should be noted that both containers these contents are kept highly isolated to prevent malfunction and the risk to user safety is low minimize the risk to the user.

When the two ingredients are mixed, and a high-frequency pulsed EM stimulus electromagnetic pulse applied, the Xenium reacts violently in a manner that can be best described as an explosion. The immense amount of released energy released in the reaction is sufficient to cause initiates a fusion chain reaction; the fusion of the deuterium atoms found in the heavy water; a chain reaction that releases even more energy and superheats the mixture, continuing until the reactants are spent. The result, contained by magnetic fields if my idea in the plasma weapons systems CT is accepted, add that the magnetic fields are powered by the same reaction, is plasma – an a superheated, ionic, electrically conductive gas. The resulting burst, directed by the weapon, is similar to ball of energy, but deviates by actually being an extremely highly heated form of mass is not the beam of energy that many might imagine, but actually a form of mass heated to extraordinary levels.

Because the contents of the [plasma pistol] clip are optimized for speed rather than power, the [plasma pistol] does not possess the same degree of lethality that its larger cousins do, though it remains particularly dangerous against unarmored targets. However, the limited quantities of reactants required for the [plasma pistol]’s small plasma generation chamber do translate into relatively low manufacturing costs. The mixture for this particular clip seems to emphasize speed of reaction rather than high energy release, since it is designed for use in the relatively small generation chamber of the plasma pistol. It is also engineered so that the amount of plasma present can be very small and still maintain a reaction.

Just a few tweaks. I'm still having garbage characters for apostrophes and hyphens... let me know if they show up in the text.

On a side note, these plasma weapons seem to be highly radioactive, eh? :P
