Strategies for those who like this game and newbies:

Shotguns aren't sniper rifles
sniper rifles are'nt shotguns
don't let baloon fish get up close to you
let your guys shoot around a corner if you can, it gives you good cover
psi weapons can be quite powerful
don't use all your rockets, you may need them later
reticulans fall to the following - one psi guy, one sniper guy, two guys with laser rifles(one human and one alien), one guy with an RPG, and a bunch of SMGs. I find that the MP5, P90, and some others really work well. Experiment, and don't crouch when fighting reticulans

In plot-sites, there are at least three or four Reticulans with rocket-spitters, and they are always behind that wall, and usually fire simultaneuosly when the rest of the Reticulans surround you.

Small things from me.
The aliens fall as flies when using the neostead shotgun. This is handy in the base missions.
All enemies fall fast against shotguns and if u can use them in base missions use them.
Try to keep your team together but seperate so they dont get wacked by one grenade ( rocket whatever explodes ) but so that they can all ( or at least most ) shoot at the same alien.
Grenades are usefull and damage a lot use them.
Try to shoot ufo's above the biomass so u get the material if u still need it ( ok spoiler but most have played the game )
Plot levels remain so go there once u are strong enoug and always with a full team.

The manual has the biomass listed in it, so it isn't much of a spoiler...
also, using SMG's(especially hard rounds) can really work well against reticulans, and soft rounds work well against transgenants. Explosives are always good, and although i bring chem flares on every mission, i still haven't used them. Are they really good for anything? :huh?:

Go to plot levels as EARLY as you can - otherwise you will be fighting reticulans with god knows what weapons and armour - believe me, been there and had to restart the game because of it.

As I said, pray, and reload. Often. Otherwise you are really going to get smashed. I hate small spaces. Especially fighting reticulans. With rocket launchers. On autofire. Get the picture?

I wouldn't know what the manual says.... *cough*

I personally used (after a considerable period of research) mostly Adv alien laser and grenade launchers. Adv grenade launchers are great weapons. I usually used a mix of the two, but the actual numbers varied - more space = more grenade launchers.

Btw, I never did finish the game......

hmmm, i can't beat the moscow mission either. Once i have killed all teh aliens in the starting area, i have one guy, and then he goes and kills 5 aliens, and then an alien comed and kills him

the second time i killed all the aliens in teh starting area and then i went out, saw 5 aliens lined up in a row, and a whole bunch of missiles and laser came at me. Teh guy barely moved before he was fried

The machine guns are ideal for that mission, you should have got at least one (preferrably two) by that time. They are also useful on the second level, even more so than in normal base missions. Just be patient, and don't rush; cover everybody and make them run through the cross-tunnels to test for presence of missile launchers.
By the way, the standard issue grenade is useful right to the end of the game; with infinite supply, you can spam them all around, once you have decent strength,
