Just got finished a mission in which I would like to call "Mishaps and Blunders".
This actually started out with My American Base spotting a Large UFo. The Interceptors, though powerless againt that sorta firepower at the moment chased it as it flew across the Altlantic Ocean. Lose track of the UFO and I tell the Interceptors to fly towards Egypt since it was heading in the direction. They get there, nada nothing, and they are heading back when up pops A Terror Mission...Bupapest under attack!
14 men, 1 Captain, 2 Sergeants, a Couple Squaddies and Rookies. Laser Tech is currently under development and so I have 3 Laser Pistol guys, 7 Rifle guys, 1 Heavy Cannon guy, 1 Auto Cannon Guy, 1 RL Girl (who is the Sergeant). Laser Pistol guys also have Stun Rods.
So First Soldier gets deployed, oh joy! A reaper sitting next to a warehouse door. Prime Grenade, toss at it's feet, Ignore Reaper. Second guy gets out, and sees a Floater in the park south of the landing site. Now let me just say that all throughout this entire game, this X-com squad has about the worst Accuracy I've probably ever seen. They could not hit the broadside of a barn when it depended on it.
In anycase Almost the entire squad of people who got off the ship shot at the alien and only one managed to actually hit it! So At end of turn I say "well if someone dies they deserve it in a way". End Turn, Grenade explodes, Reaper dead.
The Floater decides to turn around and shoot at am off screen civilian instead. He misses. But then I hear some other civilian buy it. Then my turn.
So finally end up hitting the Floater, but he's knocked unconcious. So then I Start moving people out, first going to scope out the warehouse. End of turn.
During alien's turn I see one in a house that is Southeast of the landing zone and directly east of the park. he shoots off a bomb at a civvy trying to leave the house but only ends up knocking the guy out. Ok, so alien with explosives = bad news. Start moving people in position. In the meanwhile the other squad moves east and enters the large warehouse. No aliens inside.
Also A Reaper is sitting in between the house I saw the Floater in and a store. The Store is actually between that house and the warehouse, for logistics. A Floater appears right above the Reaper's head and starts shooting at me but misses. I rocket the reaper and then suprisingly manage to kill the Floater.
So now we get to the Hijinks.
The Warehouse is empty, but on the far side there are three civilians by the far door. Unfortunatly as I had just walked in a Reaper walks in the other way. So there he is, a mere square away from 3 civvies. I shoot, desperatly, trying to kill it before the next turn. They do manage to hit hit a few times, even one of the laser soldiers hits it a few times. (Almost ended up hitting a civvie as well during this exchange.)
So next I figure It might be a bad idea to approach the house where the floater is, so I decide to try and Fire a rocket at the window. Even if it hit the wall, it would give the soldiers an opportunity to gun down the Floater. Fire the rocket. It hits a fence where two of my soldiers are standing and kills them instantly. (One of them was the other Sergeant).
Sonnuva..
So then the soldier with the Auto Cannon is standing next to the warehouse wall. I decide to try and shoot the wall so he can possible walk in and try for the Reaper. Cept' this time the game loaded the Auto Cannon with explosive ammo. You can prolly guess the result.
So now 3 people are down and I'm thinking this sucks. End Turn. And yes it was now the aliens turn to make themselves look bad. Since the Reaper was standing midway in the door, The Floater across the street shot at the civilians inside and ended up blasting the Reaper in the back, killing it before it could even do anything. Next In the blackness I see an explosion break out and hear an alien dying.
Resound to see this sillyness to the end, I continued.
Floater in park wakes up, Laser Girl is nearby so she Stun rods his carcass. Pick up his weapons and leave him there. The second Auto Cannon guy walks up to the window of the house and sees the Floater walking out the front door. Manage to actually pluck him in the back, but he doesn't die so I move him out of the window. The people on the park can't see the Floater because there is not only a tree but the front door blocking the view.
Other soldiers manage get through the alley and onto the street and see the Floater who had shot the Reaper. Manage to down him.
Next turn, guy goes up to window again, sees Floater turned around and takes a fws hots and misses. Floater Turns but can't fire and the next round from the soldier ends his days.
But oh what next? Finally manage to get to the last builing on the bottom right hand corner of map. When I First see it, I find the west wall of the store completly gone and a Floater and civilian standing next to each other gawking at the soldier. There was another alien dead in the debris.
Seeing as how an alien and a civvie are just standing there and I have not heard shots for severa' turns, I don't fire and watch the proceedings. The alien turns around and starts hauling serious orb! A laser pistol soldier is just across the street, so I pull out her Stun Rod and she starts hauling after it. My other soldiesr cover her as she chases the alien. As she gives chase to it on the south side of it, another Floater appears on the North side. End turn.
The Floater on the north side doesn't fire at my soldiers, so I assume he's unarmed. My next turn, The Squaddie Girl chases down the floater and stuns it. Then I figure to do the same with the other one. Except... he turns out to be armed. He darts around the east side of the building and shoots the girl, but she survives! The other soldiers try desperatly to shoot the alien to no avail. So with nothing else to do, she charges up and Stuns the Floater. Except he doesn't go down. Crap. I look at the options. She has just enough TUs left to get off a Snap Laser pistol shot! Point blank she shoots! Hits! Alien goes down, but doesn;t die! I capture him anyway!
End Turn! Mission ends. She's off to the hospital. Mission ends up being a GOOD rating, with only 2 out of 8 Civvies dead. 3 X-com people dead, none of which killed by the aliens.
In fact, with this game, I think the entire record of casulties due to freinly fire is actually higher then people killed by aliens. See they can hit something...
