I integrated the new paragraph and made some more changes, which I hope you'll both like
Darn, the CTD isn't as productive as it used to be
. It's just the three of us, right?
I miss Mad
But, no problem at all, there was a worse "personnel crisis" last year and we got over it easily
. Let's rock

Our initial intelligence reports tell us that the Aliens are using highly advanced craft and armaments; their movements are seemingly erratic, and their motives unknown. Conventional weapons seem ineffective against them and our toughest armor is easily penetrated by their weaponry. Against these almost impossible odds, our greatest and only weapon is science.
Since we are not familiar with any of the Alien technology, our laboratories have to cover all aspects of modern science. Due to the base module size restrictions of 25x25 meters, the research area was conceptualized as an adaptable workspace. The laboratory has a design that is easily customized to focus on one specific subject or several smaller ones. Up to 50 scientists, usually organized in three 8-hour shifts, can work in a single laboratory.
When not in use, this facility features little furniture, only a large, L-shaped workbench with a featureless flat surface in the center, which acts as the focal point of the whole module.
Connections for easy access to distilled water, electrical power, laboratory gases and a vacuum exhaust system are integrated into the sides of the counter at regular intervals. Moreover, it provides storage space for a multitude of fully customizable devices and instruments. Sterile laminar airflow hoods for biological research, anti-electrostatic mats for sensitive electronics and shielded, remote-controlled workspace for hazardous materials are additional modules that can be set-up when needed.
In one corner of the lab a large interactive screen allows easy tracking of workflow, assignment of specific tasks and shows current research results. In addition, Firenet™ nodes integrated inside the workbenches provide the scientists lighting fast wireless connentions for optimal information exchange.
Since we may need to examine live specimens, a high security area is included in the laboratory's layout. It features a small alien containment with added analysis capabilities: Integrated into the walls of the containment space are sensory devices that include passive acoustic
(ranging from infra- to ultrasound)
(ranging from IR to UV)
sensors, but also active scanners such as Röntgen
emitters and electrical conductivity testers. It is therefore highly advisable not to remain in the high-security area while tests are in progress. Those parentheses aren't important. Optic IS "from IR to UV", it's redundant to describe it.
With this design and modular equipment, the X-Corps laboratory module should be more than capable of facing the scientific war that is ahead. However, it should be noted that no lab can function without scientists, and scientists can only work as fast as humanly possible. For maximum research speed, building several labs and staffing them with enough scientists is recommended.
"We may not know what we're up to, but we're certainly determined to find out" – Rookie scientist, upon leaving the briefing room.
