Summer Cup - Started :)

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

As I wrote somewhere else on this forum I would like to organise tournament. I hope many players will be interested, but even if there will be only couple of them I will make tournament anyway B)

There will be two posts made for this tournament: in this post players will register to tournament and I will post scores here.

Second one will contain discussions and questions about tournament and in addition people can arrange matches there.

I made simple website with shoutbox at the 'clock' section for this tournament's purposes. It contains full rules, table of results and other informations.

(Site didn't look properly at Firefox, I fixed that)

Tournament rules:

Ufo2000 version : 0.7.1086

Ufo2000 server : ufo2000.xcomufo.com:2000 (default Ufo2000 server) or or ufo2000.kostax.cz:2000 (backup unofficial server)

Player's name pattern : [T]Nickname

Fight mode : Deathmatch

Map : Dawn City

Map size :5 x5 (phase A), 6x6 (phase B )

Weaponset : Ufo2000 / Modified xcom No explosives (I think it will be no explo modified xcom)

Turn limit : 300 seconds

Point limit : 15 000

Light level : 16 (day light)

Exploration level : 1 (deployment area is explored)

Ground : Off (no equipment on ground at start)

Registring

Anyone who wants play in tournament should :

  • Register here and pass nickname used at tournament and optionally time zone or availability (as information for opponents to arrange matches)
  • Wait until tournament begins and check the situation on forum (at least once a day should be enough)
  • Participate in discussion about tournament in second thread
  • Edited : Registering --- players can still sign up - tournament will start one week after fourth player signs up (players can register during that week too of course).

Gameplay

The tournament will contain two phases :

  • Phase A : players splitted into groups; play two matches with each player in the group
  • Phase B : two (or more - we will see) best players from each group play matches in well-known "tree mode" (e.g. like in soccer championships)

When tournament starts, I will put here table of pairs for matches. Each player should have nickname(during tournament's battle only), which starts with [T]. Please, use it for tournament's purposes only.

I think two (maybe three) matches in a week for each player will be enough. Each player at phase A can get 3 points for winning, 1 point for draw and 0 points for losing his match. Draw should take place only in 2 situations:

  • score (soldier's left counter) is 1:1 - it must be draw
  • score is 2:2 - both players decide to draw or continue playing

In phase B, winner will still play, loser will end tournament.

Scores will be placed on website and here.

Matches:

  • If someone won't be able to finish match, it is canceled and both players should arrange new match - no draw in this case.
  • If game crash both players decide to continue playing by F3 or fight new game. F3 can be use couple minutes after the crash, later new game should be started
  • The order of matches depends on players (but I suggest to keep order)- they can arrange matches with opponent anytime they want, but all planned matches at phase A should take place before end of that phase.
  • Result of the match should be put on forum and it would be good if both players confirm the result (but I can check it at statistics page so don't have to)
  • If someone refuse to play his match he won't get points. In this case both players (refuser and his opponent) or at least one of them should inform me about this situation on forum or by Private Message.
  • When phase B begins, there will be no possibility to move match to other time.
  • I will place on the site score of each match (as fast I can).

Screenshots

If you have nice screenshot from tournament's match, you can place it on forum as tournament documentation.

You can make screenshot by pressing F12 during battle.

If you have problems with arranging matches, maybe TimeZone Clock on my website (at Board) will be helpful.

No cheating! :bash:

Cheating won't be tolerated. If someone think that his opponent was cheating, he should write me by Private Message. Please, don't discuss about cheating on tournament's posts.

About groups:

If number of players will be hard to split, I will join the tournament.

If number of players will be good, but number of players+1 will be still good (e.g. 9, 9+1; 15, 15+1), I will join tournament too.

If number of players will be good, but number of players+1 won't be good, I won't participate.

Hmmm....I think this post is long enough

Tournament registering starts from....now! OMG

As much as I like seeing events like this, I have to say this isn't a good idea right now. I'm not trying to ruin the party, but you might want to wait until either a more stable beta is released, or even the next stable. If you haven't been observing the battle statistics for the current beta (0.7.1086), a match is at an approximate 45% to fail through crashing and crc errors. Nachtwolf has been working on fixing bugs, thus revision 7088. I don't know if it is becoming more stable from bug fixes, but we sure can hope for it in the mean time. I still hope for a nice sized tournament sometime in the near future when things are more stable with the releases. :)

And if anyone knows what happened to the battle statistics for version stability, I would like to know why it disappeared.

I know that new version could be less buggy, but I don't know when it would be released and can't be sure if it will have less bugs than now (but I hope it will of course). If new relase appear during tournament, it could be used instead of current.

Looks like the statistics generator fails halfway, probably it gets some unexpected data from the server database.

Problem solved. Statistics generation script bugfix committed to SVN in rev 1089

Thanks Serge, that gives a very good idea of what problems should be solved in priority.

Nobody interested? It is really sad :( . I'm not surprised - people have better things to do in summer time and current version's stability isn't perfect.

But tournament isn't cancelled - it is suspened instead :zzzzz: . Players can still sign up - tournament will start one week after fourth player signs up (players can register during that week too of course). I can wait even to summer's end B) .

P.S. I've written this post earlier but it was removed - I had to write it again. Does anyone know why it happened?

Probably was an error with the boards. I noticed a day or so ago there was some maintenance problems.

Could we consider "hold-the-middle" (assuming this tournament even starts). It's just that there's a billion structures to clear in Dawn City and the walls aren't paper thin like modified City, so if both sides are ultra conservative at 4 vs 4, it might end up being a bad game since you can't shoot through things easily.

Ufo2000 is tactical game - walking through walls is not default way to move from one place to another (that's why dawn city map has got some strong walls). Even if someone is waiting for your men in room with one door you can keep 1 or 2 men for watching that door and other will search for plasma :D

Floating units are useful in this situation too.

But if tournament would have more players and they would like to change rules it won't be a problem for me to do it.

I've realised that there is a tournament made by abandonia members on their forum http://www.abandonia.com/vbullet/showthrea...5834#post335834. There are some players who want take part in tournaments generally - but they don't look here and don't know about this tournament (and about other things connected with the game). Maybe there will appear here after my post - also I suggest lemm to consider playing in abandonia's tournament too.

I'm still waiting for players anyway B)

To be honest, I'm a bit put off by the size of the map. I've played this once, I think it was against Lemm, and man it was just too big, too many soldiers. I prefer shorter games like the ones on Abandonia where there's a 7k limit and you can choose any map as long as both players agree.

Count me in for the tournament, at least I'll make good cannon fodder LOL .

Having also come here from the post on Abandonia, I'll also join in this tournament - I can't do much worse than I did in the Abandonia tournament, and I need the practise. :P

Welcome in the tournament :P List of the players is updated (see players ).

About rules: I've choosed Dawn City map because everyone who got Ufo2000 game, has got that map too. Other kinds of map are available if you have xcom game. Also, it would be boring if all tournaments had the same rules B) .

Edit : Patrone wants to play too - I added him to the list but it would be nice if he also post a confirmation here.

Edit 2 : We have 4 players - I think we can start the tournament on 21st September (it is unofficial date, maybe we could start eariler and wait for players during phase A).

I've added a shoutbox at my website for tournament's players. If you want to write something to me or to other players (e.g. arrange battle or discuss results), you can use it. Please, don't spam or use vulgarismes on the shoutbox.

The shoutbox is smiletag - I've found it on sourceforge.

do explosions still go through walls?

You can test it in hotseat mode. There are solid brick walls On Dawn City map (and some weak too) - they can really block fire from many explo guns. (but you had better don't leave your unit behind that wall - I think a little damage is possible).

no walls block explosion damage

some walls/doors have higher durability that is all. the unit on the otherside of a wall with an HE exploding... he/she might as well be out in an open field.

all the brick walls have the same health, there are no weaker ones. A combat knife can cut through them, but odds are pretty good it won't happen on the first try. ;)

The tournament will start 21st September. I will post tournament's groups&pairs here and on my website on 20th September. I suggest to download my Ufo2000 Organizer (see http://www.xcomufo.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=242028814, read about it before downloading) by tournament's players - it will display current tables of the tournament (and other informations too).

Because we will have only 5 players (I will join to current four), it may be only one group - each player will play against others and first four players will go to phase B. If we get one or more extra players until 21st, there will be two groups - two players from each group will go to phase B.

Tournament's phase A tables are prepared. Tournament will start tomorrow.

If Ufo2000 main server won't work, change server's url during login to ufo2000.kostax.cz:2000 (you should use different password than you used on ufo2000.xcomufo.com:2000).

You don't have to play matches in given order - generally you have to play all matches (NOTE:(edited)two matches against every player) in group at phase A.

You can post results (both players should confirm) of the battles here, PM to me or using shoutbox on my website (http://www.ufo2000tournaments.yoyo.pl/html/clock.html).

Read rules of tournament and apply them in battles (especially draw conditions).

All players can start tournament's matches now. Player who is first in pair scheme should have first turn and second one should choose random dawn City (5x5) map. New name scheme is for Ufo2000 server only. If you really don't want to use it, you don't have to, but it will be easier for me to verify the score through the statistic page. Edited by Intri

First match was played!

I've won against lemm. It was nice battle. I post a screenshot from it - title (suggested by lemm) : the importance of the cover :D

post-14407-1221996431_thumb.png

EDIT: Just noticed that Lorondo want to play too. Ooops it will make too much mess - I should reorganise battle pairs a little. Lorondo, please be patient, I will try to make it until tomorrow. Maybe i should even split into 2 groups (3 players each).

I've reorganised phase A's structure a little - there are 2 groups now, 3 players in each (I haven't got any random number generator at my range so I put players into groups in this way : (1,3,5) went to group 1 and (2,4,6) went to group 2 - I hope you forgive me that :D ). Player will play two matches (once with first turn and once with second) against every player in group.

Sorry lemm but my victory against you was cancelled - it could be unfair a little to leave the score at current situation (but if you wish to keep that score in tables, that won't be a problem for me B) ) But our screenshot may appear at final documentation of the tournament.

If a new player will apeear (but it is really too late for doing this) with strong willing to play, he/she will join to one of current groups - any previously scores will stay, players will have to play only one more match with new player.

First and second player from each group after all matches will be able to play in phase B.

EDIT:If you found any errors in the tables, report them - I could make unnoticed mistakes.

No complaints from me =)

Also I don't know if you mentioned on this thread, but the client should be the one choosing the map?

Here's a suggestion for phase B. You could choose the top two from each group, and have single elimination (tree). Group A place 1 vs Group B place 2; Group B place 1 vs Group A place 2. The first place person gets to choose whether they want client or server. The winners play off in the championship match.

I wrote this :

In this sentence 'first player' = server and 'second player' = client :).

I planned exactly the same solution B) - with 3rd place's fight for loosers.

I will update 'phase B' section with a simple tree at my website soon (without nicknames of course :D ).

Edit: Phase B on website updated.

I hope players arranged their matches and post the scores soon :D

I would like to remind you the ways of contact with other players:

-posting here

-PM on ufo2000 forum

-shoutbox on my website http://www.ufo2000tournaments.yoyo.pl/html/clock.html

-PM on Abandonia forum (if both players have got abandonia's account)

-e-mail or other massive communication system

You have to use ufo2000.kostax.cz:2000 server at the moment (status page : http://ufo2000.kostax.cz:2000/, use different password).

No battles played yet? :huh?:

I think first matches should be played to this moment. Write about any problems with arranging matches here. I know it's sometimes hard to find time but no matches during 2 weeks is too few I think. So let's play :P
