The X-corps Soldiers

Recommended Posts

Lets see, this will be a tough one to start off, and i am rather rusty at this, so don't expload for mistakes, i'll fix it up as commentary is added. Can someone please put up a heading? I have never really learned how those work and so someone else will have to do it for me :)

[The heart of the Corps, Soldiers]

There is one part of the X-corps alien combat division that, without them, the X-corps would have no purpose. This one part is the unit of ultra-elite soldiers, known as [give me a name, i can't think of it, all that comes to mind is the dumb name X-commandos]. These soldiers are the very best that the worlds best military divisions and Special Operations groups have to offer. They are the cream of the crop.

The soldiers themselves can come from anywhere in the military structure of a country that takes part in the X-corps program, recommended by their Division Commanders to the top general of the military, who may then decide whether or not they may pass on to the X-corps physical tests. These tests are a series of extremely brutal and tough survival, physical, and mental tests that require complete focus and determination by even the very fittest and most physically capable soldiers. These tests last a total of 2 months, and if the soldiers pass the tests with at least a 98% grade, then they are considered to be allowed to pass forward into the very first stage of X-corps training. No soldier knows anything about what this training is for, other than that it is for some elite fighting force. The first stage of X-corps soldier training is your basic physical training. Soldiers are required to be able to run a mile in under 5 minutes and 40 seconds, run 15 miles in 2 hours, be able to sprint a quarter of a mile in under a minute*, run half a mile in under 2 minutes and 30 seconds, swim for extended periods of time, stay afloat in the water for 10 minutes without any use of the arms, hold their breath for 2 minutes, swim 500 yards in 10 minutes**, be able to survive in a forest or jungle for 5 days completely isolated, survive in a desert for 3 days completely isolated, have an IQ of at least 110, be able to show impressive leadership capabilities under any kind of stress, be able to handle any kind of weapon efficiently enough to sub for any weapon specialists, be able to hit a human sized target from 300 yards away with at least a 15% hit percentage[rather low, but thats a long distance to shoot], hit a target at 100 yards with a 90% hit percentage, hit a target 50 feet away with 3 bursts from a rifle with 95% hit percentage, and to be able to quickly and effectively communicate without verbaly speaking at all. This first physical testing stage is incredibly tough and only a 10% of soldiers who make it this far will get past it. This phase lasts for 1-2 months, and each soldier is allowed 3 tries at each test, except for the IQ and command ability test. This is essentially the toughest test in the entire process, so after this point, soldiers will be tested more on mental capabilities than physical capabilities.

Phase 2 is a classroom phase, in which soldiers will learn at least 1 language, learn how to take apart, repair, clean, and put back together standard X-corps gear, pilot an X-corps ship in emergencies, and get to know all of their fellow classmates. At the end of this phase, there is a test, in which soldiers must name all of their classmates, and certain traits about each one of them, learn each of their classmates specialties, be able to speak fluently to a native speaker of the language(s) they learned in this phase, be able to pilot an XC-11 Condor and [whatever the name of the interceptor is] at least relatively well, and be able to take apart every piece of the X-corpse standard equipment, tell their instructors what it is and what it does, and then put the weapon back together, and then test it to show how if it works, how it works, and anything that was wrong with the way it was put together if they got a gun that was made defective by a drill instructor. If the weapon works perfectly, and they passed all the other tests with at least 90% marks, they may move onto phase 3

Phase 3 is an advanced survival course, where soldiers will review mapreading and plotting their location on a map, as well as making a basic map for plotting their location without an official guide, and learn many different plants and their uses, in case the soldier may need something but does not have access to it. Soldiers are also taught advanced teamwork and commanding skills. At the end of this 1 month course, the soldiers must pass a test in which they will be dropped in an unknown location with no food, and be able to scavenge and hunt for food as well as use the environment for their advantage, and move over 50 miles to an extraction point at a random location. Several soldiers will be dropped into one area, but in different parts of it with the same extraction point. If any soldiers helps any other soldiers in any way, then both soldiers will be instantly dropped from the course. You are expected to find you location on a small map given to you, and plot the location of major landmarks not on the map so you can navigate your way to the extraction point. This test is not easy, and involves a lot more skills than many of the earlier challenges. If you pass this, then you have a relatively high chance of making it into the X-Corps combat division.

Phase 4 is the phase in which the soldiers will be looked at and evaluated for what they are best in. This course is a relatively simple one, only requiring that you listen in your classroom. The end of the phase is a scenario mission, where you are dropped in random terrain with 5 other squad members, 1 squad leader, 1 heavy weapons expert, 1 sniper, and 2 standard foot soldiers, and you are given the task of assaulting a small wooden ghost down, destroying its command center, and then leaving within a day. After you destroy the command center you must make your way back towards the extraction point. This mission requires teamwork and capitalizes on the skills each team member learned from their specialization classes. It is very obvious which teams did not work together as much as the others. This is the final phase in which soldiers are kept in the dark about what they are training for.

Phase 5 is the phase in which the soldiers are taught about what they are for. They are told exactly what the organization they are being recruited for is, what its purpose is, and exactly what the threat is. All soldiers will learn exactly what the X-corps scientists believe the aliens are. The soldiers will also get a general briefing on what the alien weapons are capable of and what to do in case of an injury. This is a purely educational phase with no test at the end

Phase 6 is the final phase, and the phase in which soldiers are looked at for what they would do best as. Those are not bad, but don't do so well in the physical challenges but excell in land navigation are chosen to be pilots. Others are chosen to be special X-Corps "Agents" whose jobs are so top secret that it is unknown exactly what they do, all that is known is that they do a lot for the organization. Most, however, will get assigned to the soldiers divisions, where they undergo a final assessment to see exactly what their skills are, at which point they are put in a soldier pool. Many soldiers who make it this far will be brought into the X-Corps service, but a few "lucky" soldiers will not be brought into combat specifically by chance.

After a soldier has been brought into service, they are given a general briefing on exactly what the current conditions of the war are and exactly what is going to happen. The soldiers are immediately stripped of their older ranks and patches from any military groups they were in before they were brought into X-corps. All soldiers start out as the rank Rookie, and work up the scale, regardless of their original rank or Special Operations group they were in. After the soldier's first mission, if he did well enough to impress the commanding officer on the mission, the Rookie will be promoted to the rank known as Squaddie, which is the very first actual Rank in the X-corps. Most soldiers will be Squaddies, but about 1 in 5 soldiers will do well enough to be promoted to Sergeant. A sergeant is the usual second in command of an X-corps mission, unless the mission is very important. After sergeant, about 1 in every 7 sergeants is promoted to Captain. Captains are the usual commanders of X-corps missions. However, if a Captain does exceptionally well, he may then be promoted to the rank Colonel, which is extremely prestigious and hard to get. About 1 in every 8 captains is promoted to be a colonel. However, Colonel is pretty much the highest most soldiers will ever go. 1 Colonel however may eventually be promoted to the highest rank in the entire X-corps organization, except for the Supreme Commander of the Corps. This rank is Commander. There is only 1 commander, just as there is 1 supreme commander. The commander is always one of the best soldiers in the organization, and is expected to, when on a mission, to outperform all other soldiers except for the few very good Captains and Colonels whom the commander may wish to bring along. If your commander is killed, however, he will be replaced by the best Colonel who volunteers to be promoted, and if none volunteer, then the commander is picked by a vote from 5 agents, taken whever 5 agents are present at the base.

"I do not care, what country you come from. I do not care, if you were in the SAS, or Navy Seals, or Green Berets. I don't care if you were a stinking Navy Seaman before you joined. I don't care if you are college educated, or what your rank was before you volunteered to come here. As of this moment, you are a fresh recruit into the X-corps division, you have been stripped of all your previous military status. You are not American, or British, or German, no, you are an X-Corps special commandos soldier, and you will do whatever you need to do in order to fight, because we aren't fighting now for some petty little disagreement between 2 countries, no, we are in this for Humanity, Boys and Girls! DO YOU READ ME!!!!" "SIR YES SIR!!!" - X-corps Sergeant briefing new X-corps recruits on the current situation, and what is expected of them. All Rookies are treated this way until they have been promoted to Squaddie, at which point they are officially an X-Corps soldier.

alrighty, time for the stars way up there, wow, that was LONG

* = I set it for under a minute because i can run a quarter of a mile in just over a minute, and elite super-fit soldiers are going to be more fit and faster than I am

** = i chose 10 minutes because i have no idea how fast 500 yards in 10 minutes of swimming is, but i tried to set it high as X-corps troops will most likey be running instead of swimming.

So, how do you guy like this long read? I wrote this relatively carefully, modelling it on current special operations units training and class progression

Please, i need commentary!!!!

Well, actually (I really like this word... :P ) It's not from THE list... ( http://www.projectxenocide.com/ctassets/creativetext.html ), but I think it's not a bad idea. Maybe it could be inserted in the information given at the beginning. ( http://www.xcomufo.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=3273 )

The heading might be "X-Net://Pegasus.net/Organization/Project Xenocide/X-Corps"

Maybe you want to add paragraphs, and I think you shouldn't use words like "ultra". Try to be a little more scientific and less sensational. (Like you are, when you write sth like

These tests are a series of extremely brutal and tough survival, physical, and mental tests that require complete focus and determination by even the very fittest and most physically capable soldiers.
:)

Please use SI Units (meter, gram, liter etc.), no American units (like yards)

No for a few comments on the text, although it won't be too much and taken out of the text. Sry!

blue for comments, orange for additions, red for deletions

The first stage of X-corps soldier training is your a basic physical training.

I think the second phase is not tough enough.

If any soldiers helps any other soldiers in any way, then both soldiers will be instantly dropped from the course.

That won't improve teamwork...

Those who are not bad, but don't do so well in the physical challenges but excell in land navigation are chosen to be pilots.

The commander is always one of the best soldiers in the organization, and is expected to, when on a mission, to outperform all other soldiers except for the few very good Captains and Colonels whom the commander may wish to bring along.

If your the commander is killed, however, he will be replaced by the best Colonel who volunteers to be promoted, and if none volunteer, then the commander is picked by a vote from 5 agents, taken when ever 5 agents are present at the base.

Ok, I know, this is no very extended comment, but try to make a new draw which is a little better to read (paragraphs!) and maybe shorten it a little in the phase descriptions.

Maybe you want to have a look at this: http://www.xcomufo.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=6904&st=35

Don't get me wrong! It's a nice first draw! Good work! :)

nononono, all special operations units capitalize on team work, but during physical and mental challenges if you are caught helping a team mate then you and the team mate are out, just because you are elite soldiers doesn't mean that you can rely on your team mates for everything. You have to be able to do everything alone, then you can work on doing everything with team mates.

k, i'll use SI units, i forgot you guys don't use yards and such

i'll make it 350 meters then, and time limit stays 10 minutes.

Sorry about no paragraphs, i happened to think of that after i was half asleep and really didnt want to log back on and correct that

Phase description must describe the whole thing, this isn't supposed to be some short little read, this is like the alien origins topic, so its going to be LONG. Once everything about soldiers is done i'll add in a few more paragraphs, correct sentences, and such. But until then i'll let a few more people discuss this before i change it

Azrael, you need to read it because you are good at this kind of breaking it down

or i could just do that myself and describe the point of each paragraph

Guest Azrael

Sorry blehm, not enough time at the moment, I will when I get my computer working again (no microprocessor makes things go sloooooow :P)

Just would like to point that this text is not likely to appear on the X-net, as I haven't outlined which starting texts there will be yet, I want to focus on the standard X/Com ones, at least until we get them all completed we won't add any, yet.

yeah, i figured that much, the ones that need to go in are first priority, but i think this would make a tribute to all of your fallen rookies. In a while like i said before i might explain the ranking system even more, and go into their jobs, because right now the majority of it is the training phases
