About Downloading Full Ufo Games

Recommended Posts

I noticed a couple of times that mods etc. have removed links to sites which have downloads to UFO games... (such as UFO 1 and TFTD) Because certain maps need full game

Isnt it true that the games are now abandonware and can be downloaded free as long as they are non profit (cant try and make profit giving the game away)

Atleast that what i heard on one of the abandonwarez sites. (has lots of old dos games)

No, abandonware is still illegal to download.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abandonware

Well the site of which i found downloading for abandonware said that the games on the site are legal for download as long as they are not given away with the attempt to gain a payment. And also the componeys of abandonware generally have gone bankrupt etc. and no longer will gain profit :S

However i do have a leget copy of UFO as i brought it many years ago.

I assumed the ufo game would be free to distribute now anywho. I was just wondering

just noticed that at the bottom of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abandonware

it had under legal sites for downloading them as Some sites Which i noticed did have UFO games?

Also i think microprose went out of business/bankrupt and abandonwarez from those componys is no longer defended as theres no one to defend them unless rights are sold/given to another company

The wikipedia article stats at the beginning:

"The term has no legal meaning. This means that labeling any kind of software 'abandonware' does not make it legal to distribute it. Unless put in the public domain, any and all abandonware remains covered under copyright law."

Naturally, the abandonware sites will promote their view of the issue, i.e., "the games on the site are legal for download as long as they are not given away with the attempt to gain a payment", which has no legal standing concerning copyright law.

Microprose was bought, it didn't go out of business. And X-Com's copyrights belong to TakeTwo now.

Azreal...without trying to raise heck what choice but to go to abandomware sites to get x-com nowadays?...have you tried finding a legally purchasable copy?

Amazon has 3-4 Gold edition win 98's for a whopping $150 American ($200 to a Canuck)and e-bay has a zillion European copies but its near impossible to get an original copy.

I Own my own copy of TFTD (x-com and apacolypse too) but it was Uncompatable with Scotts Utilities and i so wanted to try something new i looked for weeks for another copy and had to settle for abandonware myself...I don't condone the use of abandonware but what choice do consumers have? i would buy it today if it were in a store...but its not.

sigh on a postnote the abandonware copy i managed to get still doesn't let me access all of scotts utilities features but enough of them to change the game a bit.

If you have a solution or know of a store\site that has legally purchasable copies ( at regular game prices not prices that are artificially raised to gauge the fans of this game...$200 bucks geez) please share it I will certainly buy another copy of the game I already own just to use the diff features on utilities to change it up a bit after 10 years.

OldBlue, you don't understand me :) I'm not the owner of this site, I'm a moderator; I don't set forum policies, I follow them and enforce them whenever necessary. Whether I agree or disagree with them is irrelevant. :)

Bottom line is, the board doesn't support piracy, meaning that we'll not assist in helping you find the site, download, etc. Ufo2k beta is in fact stable enough to run without xcom data. so this should not be an issue anymore. :)

Discussion to this will not change the boards' minds btw. This topic will be closed, but pinned for reference. (mods or anybody helpful, please refer newcomer questions like this to this topic)
