Need Another Coder ?

i have been following your project a while now and somehow it ensnared me; i was a real ufo junk not so long ago and now and then i still run it on my very old msdos6 machine. i'd really appreciate helping you in the future.

right now i'm on "holidays" from my studies of informatics at the technical university in darmstadt/germany (until next week that is).

in the meantime i'm working as in every holiday in the technical center of a bigger german ensurance company. i got an own project where i layout/program a complete web-based document management system. right now i'm running a test phgse with about 12 employees feedbackin me on where to tune the system i worked on for the last 3/4 of a year. (for those interested - the base of my DMS was a Open Source Wiki Clone runnig on top of the versioning system RCS. I run it now under AIX/Apache2).

So, what can I do ?

- I can fluently read/write Perl, PerlTK, PHP4, HTML, Javascript and some other web techniques; this is where I am quite good at the moment so maybe you need someone to help coding your web ?

- I studied C++ (ANSI C++ that is), Java2 and MIPS Assembly. As it is, i don't know how "good" i really am with C++m, so maybe you just send me some info or sample code beforehand so i can study it a bit. i guess i'll get into it

- i'm pretty accustomed to UNIX/AIX/Linux (more than Micro$oft stuff in any case) meaning ksh, sed,POSIX pattern matching and other nice tools

- I can fluently read/write the "real" languages English and German - I could translate whatever you like without any problems i believe

So and what can't I do (yet) ?

Actually, this would be the first Open Source Project involving me, so I would need some information on how contributing works. Maybe you got some nice linx helping me get the whole idea ?

As University starts, time will be an issue. I'll try to be active - but don't expect too much, 'cause :uzzi: higher mathematics really !(§/grfjx![§! well you know what i mean.

interested?

I'm glad to see you were able to run the alpha with your radeon. There's still a lot of compatibilty issues to resolve with the cards.

A good place to start would be to review the design docs:

http://www.xcomufo.com/forums//index.php?a...t=ST&f=40&t=996

We are currently working to implement our own cvs system because sourceforge is not meeting our needs. You should contact mindstormmaster and lordt regarding this.

Post the alien logo in the Art forum.

Red Knight is the lead programmer and he will give you more details about the work on xenocide itself.

Also, I recommend you get and ICQ-ish number to communicate better.

You should be able to post the image here, and any contributions you can make are more than welcome. we all understand the contraints that time puts on your ability to work on the project -- we do this in our spare time too, so we won't complain about the speed you work at. We just know that *eventually* it will be completed. Thanks for joining and welcome to the team.

I'm not sure what kind of experience you've had with ASP or ASP.NET, but for the most part that's what the cvs system is being written in. This is mainly because that's where most of my experience is and I have bits and piceces of it already written. Send me a message on AIM or ICQ and we can talk more about the cvs.

LordT on the otherhand is working on the public xenocide website. I think he's doing most of his work in PHP. (LordT, correct me if i'm wrong.) If you'd rather stick with PHP you might want to talk to him about helping him with the public site.

good morning from europe everyone and thank you for your quick answers and the warm welcome. i really appreciate it.

i will definitely get an icq number tonight (tonight@central european time, of course because i'm stuck at work till late afternoon).

since everybody makes a point of icq - i must admit, it's pretty useful and will come in handy soon.

i don't have any ASP experience save some crap beginner's tutorial, but i will contact you later (mindstormmaster) for a quick discussion, i have a feeling theres some interesting new stuff in it for me as web developer.

PHP on the public site suits me just fine, i will contact you (LordT) when i'm off work so we can arrange something, ok?

one other thing - if anybody likes me to localize xenocide to european languages - i can do pretty good Spanish and English, as a German; if anybody's interested, please answer this topic with suggestions on how that can be made possible; since many ufo-fans around me are not very good at English to say the least ;-) it would be helpful for them and really a fun thing to do, personally.

until then,

ZWN

ps. i will post the pic in the art forum when ready, as devised by Micah; makes more sense to me

Guest stewart

We're just waiting for his membership check to clear. :D

As I told . . . . some other guy with a 3 letter name (I think he was from the czech republic, I forget), we're more than happy to have anouther programmer. But right now the engineering side of things, really is still in the planning stages; very little if any coding is going on right now. It's not a problem it's just that this is a nessessary hurdle to overcome. The only problem is that if someone is excited about contributing they'll have to wait a little bit before rolling up their sleeves and coding, so there's the risk of getting discouraged.

That being said, zwn, we'd like to get to know you better so as I told the other 3-letter-guy start by contributing to the discussions and by submitting ideas, artwork, code snippets, whatever.

As for your credentials, the game will be written in c++. If you feel your c++ skill are not very strong don't worry as there will be the need for bug hunters and I suppect (even if you don't think so) you can handle that.

BTW I remeber now the "other" guy was _PJ (the underscore is too a letter! )

umm, i think one of the admins has to promote/upgrade you to a project member in order for you to see the documents.

Stewart or Micah, that means you...

Whoops. I forgot where that topic was. I passed along the info in a PM.
