Swimming Lessons...

Aren't you able to swim underwater? How come you need this special armour to move up-and-down-and-all-around? Why can't they swim? :(

Because if they would swim, targeting would b much more difficult. The armour keeps them steady. Plus they had it in UFO:EU so since this is just EU with different gfx... ;)

TFTD's Geoscape doesn't look all that good because all it does is display the seabeds and ochre for everything else that doesn't apply. UFO could get away with it easily as the sea was shown as one solid block of blue. It doesn't work too well in TFTD where all they've done is invert the land with the sea and change the blue to an olive brown.

Had they textured the land segments, it would've looked a lot better, but that would've require a bit of retooling of the game engine.

As for the issue of swimming - yes, a bit of a can of worms that. Same thing like asking about the realism of throwing grenades underwater.

Sometimes it's just better to throw realism out the window and go along with it. It hurts the head less. :D

*gasp*

Is this the same NKF who has written the widely renowned theory of the activity of the humble brainsucker? Saying to throw reality out of the window? I can't believe it.

I suppose one of the reasons why they can't move up and down is that the armour is fairly heavy so is unable to move up or down, infact they just sink (on that note, does fall damage occur? because that too would be unrealistic). And on the grenade throwing, the grenades are made of an un-nameable material which is a catalyst to water providing an environment for the water to vaporise into air extremly quickly on contact but not due to temperature so once the grenade has passed the vapour turns back into water, thus allowing the grenade to travel through water extremly effectivly.

Yeah, targeting would be hard. But hey, special ops does it all the time. Also, the gfx in TFTD are worser than UFO in my opinion. The geoscape is just... blargh!

They do? Since when do anyone fights underwater?

And the geoscape and battlescape in UFO and TFTD are identical, the differences are different colors to give the illusion that they actually chanced something and new tiles :P TFTD is UFO recycled.

I think this belongs here. Mods move it to where you think it should be. Now, a question about our aquanauts...

Swiming underwater would mean the density of the aquanaut should be close to the density of water.

But since the aquanaut has armor (even the armor you begin with, the default one, is heavy) it is more like a walk than real swiming.

Magnetic Aqua Armor has a swiming device attached to the armor, allowing the aquanaut to float, but that I think it affects the firing precission a bit (not sure, but I think so).

So to answer your question, no, they can't swim at first, since the metal inside the armor is way heavier than water, and that pulls the aquanaut on the bottom way beyond the thrust upward an aquanaut would be able to have by swiming in an armored suit

I think I saw a few cheesy movies with underwater fighting, harpoons, torpedoes and so on.

If the enemy is underwater, it must be killed there, or it will invade the humankind :D

And the grenades are frezbee-like shaped when activated and thrown, so they go further (I think)

I know Russia's special ops have a underwater force, Britain's SBS are basically the water version of the SAS and involve themselves in underwater training. Underwater fighting is very rare (It's too impractical unless you are using it as a form to sneak up on someone, even so, it's a tiring session to say the least) Reality is it's all about striking first and by that I mean a quick kill. Though deep deep deep underwater fighting like TOTD is plain laughable. I suppose if TOTD was made now given the capacity of the new consoles then we can demand and expect more of the realisim required but back then it would have been impossible for TOTD to become like what some of us may want it to become now, it would be pretty dull as well so I can understand the use of non realisim but at the same time the game is almost a direct copy so it's not bad or new but at the same time, not really intresting.

If your soldiers had to tread water the whole time (thus being able to move in three dimensions), how long do you think their stamina would last? :P

The best you can do is get a ballast pump hooked up to their armor, which would

1) be of human technology, and thus very bulky

or

2) be of alien technology: the magnetic ion armor.

how comes that my aquanauts can fight in Deep (dunno how deep that is in meters) water and be back in the base in 10 minutes without suffering decompression sickness?

It is like throwing grenades underwater or the fact that my sonic cannon cannot shoot down aliens flying over land ... sigh.

Its a game with bloody mind-controllig aliens that wield sonic weaponry and have subspecies with claws that one can kill with an enhanced pocket knife.... not all that realistic.
