I've just got funny idea. I know that there are thousands cons and i might be somewhat unbalancing, but...

What do you think abou x-com deploying actual airplane carrier? A huge, water-floating ship? Before you start screamin NOOOO!!! and spanking me :spank: think once again:

First of all, it would cost A HUGE LOT of money. I mean it. Dunno what is the planned balance, but it would be millions of $ - let's say, one or two year x-com budget (I mean, from UN funds, not the selling aliens goods).

Second. The carrier would move only overseas, and quite slowly. To cross Atlantic ocean it would take up to week. And some month to go around the world. (Still better than Fileas Fogg ;)).

Third. Carrier would be something like moving mini-base. The facilities would be three hangars, small radar, some stores and living quarters. Oh, and rocket defense, of course. You could send your crafts to the carrier and some troops and equip. But nothing more.

Fourth. Practical usage of such thing would like that: You know, that there is alien base somewhere in South America. Unfortunately, you have bases in Alaska and Middle East. It take days to fly on missions here. So, you send a carrier (with two interceptors and small boarding crew with Skyranger) to nearby ocean. And just wait for next supply craft to fly-by. Surprise ! :alienoooh: Two interceptors quickly send it to the ground and assault squad deploy on mission.

Fifth. There is also a funny, new mission in game: carrier defense. Aliens drop troops on your ship to get rid of that pain in donkey :spank: . You have great ocasion to send them flying around :explode: ! But remember: repairing carrier will cost you a lot! So try not to blow up too many fuel tanks :devilburn: .

Hee, I don't really believe it would ever be implemented. Nonetheless, if it would - it be a lot of fun.

hmmm....a base at sea might do it as well. Think TFTD. Then the carrier isn't that needed. Besides, your craft can fly faster then a carrier, and it can take the trip to the base (not the interceptors, but the skyranger can). I think a seabase could be worthvile, but cost the double in maintance, shipping-price up with 1.5, plus no real founding for having it there.......wait.....it wouldn't be practical, at all. So....meh...

just ignore me. :P

A carrier could be very effective for V1+ when we add in TFTD elements. Of course, it wouldn't be a aircraft carrier in that case, it would merely be a submarine carrier.
I'm only partially inactive. :P I can still be reached at cpl.facehugger@gmail.com, and via PM. Preferably the former.

But add a normal carrier ship. Should be more dear than usual one, plus it should have defensive cruisers around and such. Merge XCOMs.

Yeh a carrier would be a pretty good idea

Itd mean you could get your stupid slow donkey Skyranger to a Terror mission while its still the DAY TIME

Mmmm TFTD an UFO:EU together? Like it should be?

That sounds like one heck of a game...

How about we mix with Terror from the deep? ;)
Subaquatic bases with subaquatic interceptors. Battles in the air, on the ground and deep in the oceans... hmmm! yummy!

Anyway, I really like the idea of a (even slow-)moving base. So a carrier would be nice and effective imo. After all, that's just a base that can move, right? With higher maintenance costs and transfer fees and all.

Man would that ever get expensive!

If so I hope that they don't make flying boats. They should have the boats (or submarines) delivered by aircraft.

Here I go an angry brother gonna make his move

See I'm a get him in the crowd with a couple heavies
And lay the barrel to the ground, hold the gat steady
And now I'm ready for my adversary, talk is cheap
I'm looking for a way to make a plan gonna keep it neat
So don't be telling me to get the non-violent spirit

I think that an orbittal station would make a tempting target for spaceborne flying saucers, don't you? In order to have a spacestation in a war situation you'd have to have air superiority in orbit.

I like the idea of a MOVING sea base. That could prove rather usefull.

what about crafts repairing and refueling in other basees with at least 1 free hangar?

Well they do have concepts for stealth ships and the like. You could have an oil rig size stealth ship with an elevator for VTOL aircraft and bow loading doors for smaller boats. That would be cool.

I think the idea of a moving base is really cool. And aircraft carriers are just that. For the planned merging of the two xcom game concepts, there will probably a big discussion on whether there will be one type of hangar or two... after all, what you had in TFTD were "flying" subs. So one type of hangar should be enough for both kinds of craft, and the aircraft-carrier-base-thing would be really useful... just relocate your base to wherever the most alien activity is. and a lot of countries do have coastlines...

so the concept would be a moving base, fully configurable, with less space to build facilities. alien attacks on the base would be like those ship terror missions in TFTD; oh, and of course if you relocate your base, the aliens would have to find it again in order to attack it. but because it is a really large thing on a featureless terrain (no mountains to hide behind on open sea), it can be detected easily.

hey, if you want an interesting game, you could try and restrict yourself to ONLY using mobile bases... woohoo!
I doubt, therefore I might be.

Yeah.. but a big thing about the xcom bases is that they are supposed to be secret.. and if you were building components onto them you'd either have to drydock or construct them in mid voyage.. and if you were doing that, you would have a lot of airtraffic coming to and from some point in the ocean.. and I think that would be as dead a give away as a huge cluster of supply ship ufo swarming around some spot on the globe.

true. too bad. perhaps a subaquatic base? nah, wouldn't be cool either. I kinda liked the idea of the carrier... but you're right, the secrecy point is valid.

oh, btw, does it strike anyone as odd that you can build xcom bases anywhere you like? shouldn't it be more like "i want to build my base there" and then getting a message "we have located x possible base locations in the area you selected - choose one" ?

I mean, when xcom is all secret, it shouldn't be possible to build a base in eyesight of L.A. or NYC or any other big human habitational zone, right?

Now you got something interesting. Rather than limit the possible locations how about we make it into the spying system. See: Wouldn't it be easier for aliens to find the location of your base if it was near a big city?

now back to the carrier topic :D

You know, when I first saw this topic from the main forum, I thought it was referring to that kick-donkey spaceship on the front of the X-COM box that never did show up in the game (granted, it does sort of have the shape of an Avenger.. but it's just too damn big to be an Avenger. It's also cooler-looking, in my opinion).

That's about it from me, though, on this topic..

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Right, A moving seabase is A LOT easier to make unoticeable, a big cargo ship could even do the trick with VTOL crafts... I think the UK actually have Harrier Carriers... ^_^

Besides, what's the point of a deep sea underwater base... a floating, mobile base will do just as well, particularly for "flying subs", that crappy excuse to make things different with implausible designs... (it goes in the same category as throwing grenades underwater, or running for that matter, when it's ridiculously easy to float around)
Even with only 2 hangars, a store and a living quarter, it makes for a nice little strike base, and NOW i'd like those pesky aliens try to invade OUR boat for a change...
Mhhmmmm Prox Mines... :explode:
...and... THOSE DAMN CONTAINERS!!! :devillaugh:
