How to transport scientists from a destroyed base

Hi,
I've had a little disaster when my base was destroyed under a collapsed building (I didn't even notice it while I was chasing a huge ufo). It was my main manufacturing and researching base, so there were a lot of specialists. Now I cannot get the scientists to my other base. The soldiers arrived with a taxi, but engineers and scientists still sit in the basement of the destroyed base. Is there a way to get them out? Or shall I just sack them?

Why could you not just transfer them via Transtellar (going to the base management screens, selecting transfer between bases and ordering their transfer like usual)?

If the base was actually destroyed (I've never experienced this) would this transfer option be available?

The problem with techs is that they don't have the usual 'go-to-building' orders that your agents have. If they are stuck in any building except a standing X-Com base, they'll stay there forever.

The same thing happens if they are forced to walk to a base (after losing Transtellar), and they hit a building in their path with broken people tubes stopping them from getting to their next destination. In this scenario, as long as they are still moving, you can instantly transport them to their destination safely by going into ultra-fast time compression for a brief moment. Once they stop, it's over.

One solution might be to use an editor, like XED or J'Ordos's editor, and change the class of your scientists into agents, then get them to walk or fly them home and finally switch their roles back.
