Those are some neat UFOs.

I think picture 4 is a little too dark. It might look better with a brighter ambient light, and more contrast.

It's been decided that the metal of an alien ship will have an "iridium" type of sheen. It looks like a drop of oil in water.

I wonder, would you be willing to experiment with different effects around the UFOs? UFOs use gravity waves to move themselves around at many times the speed of sound. It'd make for some very impressive pictures over the water. :)

Thanks for the comments, and absolutely. That's a good idea. Some kind of manipulative effect around the water would really bring life to the image, and the nativity of the craft itself. Thanks, you've given me a task. -_e

Well, tried out some kind of water behavior with the craft, and in this case I'm using everyone's favorite double-decker version. I wasn't entirely sure what you meant RoboDojo with the craft's surface, so I gave it my best shot for the time being. Here are two different angles to what I came up with.

You're not talking about Heinrich Himmler of the SS are you FaceHugger? Lmao. I'll take a look at what Himmler came up with and incorporate it into my designs. These are just all purpose mock ups for getting something on the table, and to later work with to conform to consensus designs of the project. What will become of them I'm not sure, I'm just having fun with them. Thanks for the comments once again.

EDIT: I see what you mean by the broken glass now. It's kind of like what you would see in a window pane in a Church. That's a very nice design and looks great on the UFO's. I'll try to come up with more models, (instead of the standard disc shape) and attempt that surface structure.

I like those ufos a lot!

The only problem is there's a lot of people in these forums who are against saucer-kind of ufos because they are overused. If you check the original games ufos, none of them were saucers..

overused may not be the word. They're just that popular I think!!! :D

also: the higher the technology, the more simple the shape of the material gets. Look at us. How did cars look back in 1900 and how do they look now? It's just a matter of evolution. The look gets simpeler and the functioning more complex. I think that round ufo's are still the way to go, but, don't mind me, you guys do what u want to do of course

Curved materials were hard to make in the 1900's. That's why you never saw them in old vehicles, it was too expensive. Now, curved materials are worth the small extra cost in making them.

I like those pictures, Albino Crow. Could you make the water under the UFO bulge as well? Like, the gravity waves are causing a high-tide under the UFO?

Actually there's nothing saying the small scout can't be the classic roundish shape, the UFOs Himmler has made are more like the medium and large scouts. The irridium/irridescent sheen will probably be a hardware effect rather than being a fixed part of the texturing, although we've added it in spots to show the effect. If you make you material have an ambient blueish tint, and a specular color more towards red, then you'll get the effect somewhat. Look for the thread in this forum called iridium sheen to see it in action.

What more can I say that hasn't been said already :)

Nice effects on the craft with the water. I particularly like the last ones, I think they'd fit in well as the 'hubcap' small scout ufo.

I've enclosed in the zip file the texture and bump material for you to use (and of course anyone else as well ;)). Also in there is a small avi of the starfire with a heavier version of the effect in motion. The actual effect will be more subtle but still noticable.

For the larger craft staying away from spherical designs is a good idea as the amount of non sperical ufo's spotted outweighs the classic 50's style movie designs.

OMW, i love the effects you get out of bryce, I really like to see my medium scout in that water scene running at light speed :P

Like your models, but i would like to see work on one of the game ufo's like i have, to get some new ideas for myself, and to get some help in the UFO department.

i like the effects of water.....but...

those ufos are too plain. Texturewise there ok, but the design is simply too simple.

Immense thanks for the feedback everyone, and Kudos to Deimos for hooking me up with that texture.

Himmler:

I shall see if I can come up with anything in the larger realm of craft and later put them in this topic for all to see. I really love your current craft insofar. The design ideas are superb, especially on the STARFIRE. The suggestive triangular shape worked out quite well. :)

Mikker:

Very true, and I agree. I didn't want to go into too much detail or expand too much on the classical representation of the disc shaped craft for appeal purposes. Now is when I'll do that. ^_^

And generally I agree. Disc shaped craft in this game would become insanely monotonous. Perhaps a single craft, as suggested, the small scout filling the space would certainly work out well. Once again thanks for the feedback.

edit by j'ordos: right names please :)

BTW Albino Crow, please upload your pics directly to the server as attachments to the post, rather than linking to them from a remote server. We've had other use remote server then change providers, and the pics are no longer active. Thanks!

whatever the end result, these pictures will still make great concept art for the website. As concept art (pictures for the manual, website pics, game wallpaper) I think they're great.

After all, who remebers this alien being in the game?

That was an early concept for the Sillacoid IIRC. Or was it the Celatid?

Anyway, MA is right. Concept art is great for the credits.

Wait a sec...Hmm... We could put a couple of black and white versions of these pics in the X-Net. After all, aren't we going to include some background info on UFO lore? These would be great for that. :)
