Nicknames For Kit

On top of deciding on 'official' names for the aircraft, that's a good idea. Once there are some ideas out there for nicknames, maybe a vote for the best ones could be held?

Hehe -

Know what would be fun? If for the flight call-signs that are implemented for flights on the geoscape, we made the list of them based upon the names of the games developers.

Examples:

Red Knight 1-1

Stewart 4-1

GreatGold 1-4

Something to that effect.

INTERCEPTOR - Devil, Satan, Killer, Lumberjack

FIRESTORM - Jackhammer, Harnessed One, Nemesis

LIGHTNING - Hexagon, Pygmy

Skyranger and Interceptor names should reflect a conventional (if international) development.

Skyranger Names:

Atlas

Buffalo

Chieftain

Raider (liked it from above)

Skyhook

Talon (liked this one too)

Interceptor Names:

Banshee

Defender

Hawk

Kestrel

Monsoon

Spectre

Viper

Alternately, each plane could be given a secret name classification "Type S Fighter"/"Type K Transport" and a backstory about it having been built in secret at China Lake Naval Air Station/White Sands Test Range or some such, and hinting at other secret designs out there. You could even throw in a CIA-esque code prefix. Ie:

Fighter Project 'S'

CODENAME: ZX/MONSOON

(Specifications)...

I think some of the more "badass" names contributed above might go well with the alien-derived aircraft, especially with a codename slapped on.

You have to consider that there's the "official" nickname, and then there's the nickname that the soldiers actually use.

For instance, the B-52 bomber. Named the "Stratofortress" by the manufacturer, but known as the "BUFF" (Big Ugly Fat F*cker) by troops in Vietnam.

Or the A-10 : "Thunderbolt II"/"Warthog."

'This is your stun baton, troops. They call it the "Zx-33 lightsaber." We call it "Ol' Sparky". '

It's the nickname from the original game, so it's part of the intellectual property of the game owners too. :crying:

I think you are talking about Airwolf :P

I dont know, but I think the firearms should keep pretty mundane to military standards. I was always partial to the German system, MG for machine-gun, MP for machine-pistol ect, but only because I love H&K firearms. I think the armor shouldnt really have a "official" nickname but something more like traditional acronyms. Like the Powered Armor could be Advanced Tactical Armored Exoskeleton (A.T.A.X.) or for the flying suit like Advanced Tactical Aerial Assault Suit. Definentally need some soldier nicknames for the armor though like Tin-Can or the like.

Some aircraft/spacecraft/platform names thought are a little more difficult I guess. Here are the few I can think of that arent already used :(

Vindicator, Rattlesnake, Chimera, Rapier, Stilletto, Atlas, Tarantula

not everything needs a nick name, like not everyone has a nick name (self-applied doesn't count). Forceing a nick name on something will often sound exactly that, forced.

Nick names, if applied, will be so verbally between personnel; probably for things people need to talk quickly about. This a matter for the script department. "we've got a bug(chrysalid)!" for example.

Weapon nick names arn't neccessary. Putting a nick name down in text on a weapons description in the inventory is pathetic, does the DOD/MOD do that on its official weapon reports? Does the general send a communique saying "relocate 60 troops from beta company, to the Eastern European Xcom facilities, and make sure sufficient Ol' Sparky's are provided." ?

The term might be used in the training rooms, but the player will never hear it, so why waste time coming up with it.

And lastly, putting it down on a research report just plain doesn't make sense. "you will nick name it this when we give it to you". :whatwhat:

The question also needs to be asked, how are these nicknames going to be implemented? If you give everything an official designation, an official nickname, and a common use nickname, that is three names you have to remember for every item, because you never know which one will be used by whom. Perhaps if there was functionality to allow the player to rename the items as well, that would be cool, but I think MagicAndy is right, giving a nickname to everything or almost everything will render a lot of the elements of the game incomprehensible if you don't know all of the lingo by heart.

It's like the first time you started spending time on a public forum. People are constantly throwing out abbreviations and nicknames that have become so abstracted from what they are talking about that you have no way of figuring it out without doing a bunch of indepth research that is almost never worth it. I think it would be better to just stick with the Official designation and an official nickname. You are playing the game from the director's viewpoint. If you want to say that the soldiers in your game call the Blaster Launcher the BFG 9000, you can. That doesn't need to be coded into the game.

thats a good idea!

Then the nick name can be shown in the tactical data on the battescape screen, if the player doesn't want to enter one, then the official "name" is used.

That will be hard. The name should be replaced in million places.

forget it then. I'm just in the proccess compiling a list of object and alien names for Breunor and to save confusion and simple = better.

Leave for Version +1.0

Yes, this has been talked about before and I think we came to the agreement that there will probably be modding tool in the future which gives you "free hands" to rename every gun and alien by original for example.

I wouldn't think it would be to difficult to setup a global array of kit names, indexed to the id tag of the item. When the item meets it prereq to be available, the player gets a popup for the nickname, could built in the research completed screen. Add the input to the global array of kit names and just use a function call to select the name when needed instead of hard coding the name.

But your right, its prolly v1++

To make it easy to add this feature in the future, it needs a lot of work already to V1 so I'm starting to wonder why wouldn't it be included already?
