No Way, Commander

Do our people REALLY have to agree for everything? If I was ordered to stay close to the sectopod, prime a grenade and drop it under my foot, I wouldn't agree. Would you?

Soldiers might have some freewill - they can't be dummies. They would have new stat - Loyalty. Or this would be based on Bravery.

Agreed, not sure if its possible and not sure if its any good even if it is possible.

Just say they are all loyal to the hilt and willing to give their lives for the good of the Earth. -_-

I also agree that giving the AI control at critical points would really turn the player off. This aspect will play itself out in a multiplayer setup though. In a large multiplayer setup you might control just 1 or 2 guys in the battlescape, so you'll be less likely to sacrifice yourself. Would be fun to see how that plays out!

i think if a solider would disobey a direct command in a situation like xcom that the commander would kill the solider or at least court marshel him.... and as far as the game went... i would HATE it.. its bad enough they run out of time units at just the wrong momeny.. or miss a shot... or throw the grenade way off... or the blaster launcher bug... last thing i need in my squad is some smart a$$ that thinks he knows whats good the the core...

"wiggens, please kill mr thompson for disobeying my order"

"YES SIR COMMANDER TOMMY!"

I know what you mean, Judge. But I'm still not sure who the Player is in the game:

The player might be the Grand Commander who controls the whole X-com operation and tells all the soldiers, scientists, and engineers what to do. (which is what you're referring to)

OR That everything DOES think for themselves. And the player IS their brian. Like: The reason the rookie primed a High Explosive, dropped it behind a Sectopod, and ran away, WAS NOT because you told him to, but because He thought of that himself.

Makes sense to me. I'd like to think that they're all loyal from the get go anyway and know the stakes, which is why they'll do the crazy stuff they do no questions asked - orders or no orders.

They'd better all be loyal, or my blaster launcher's going to teach them some discipline. Or maybe go to terror site, stay in ship, let them all watch their countrymen die?

Me: Sergeant Shadrin, kneel in front of Captain Steinbach. Captain, shoot that heavy plasma over Shadrin's head, and into that alien that's about to end all of humanity.

Steinbach: What??? Sir, I cannot do that.

Me: Why not? You're going to save the future of humanity!

Steinbach: But I might hit my friend, Shadrin!

Me: Idiot, you've got an accuracy level of 90! Fine, Akira, take the shot.

Akira: But that alien's so cute!

Me: Argh! Iwahara, toss a grenade at the alien.

Iwahara: Righto, commander! If you don't like those disobidient soldiers, I'll get rid of them for you! [primes grenade, throws towards Shadrin, Steinbach, Akira]

Me: Oh, no. . .
