My Habits...

NEW habit, actually. I started a new game yesterday. I've been saving a .txt file of all my soldiers and their stats, so that I can Alt-Tab to it when I'm setting up my guys. This shows all the stats, so that I can see the EXACT number of where that stat was when I first recruited him/her, rather than guessing from the meter. I also put in the improved number of the stat...

The real reason why I first wanted to do this was so that I could look at everyone's strength stat and determine what loadouts to give them for a mission. By doing so, I can Alt-Tab to the file, to make sure I've got the loadout right, and that way I can avoid encumbering my guys and losing Time Units.

For those of you who don't know, Strength matches up with the weight of what you're carrying. If the number of your total weight exceeds the number of your Strength, the difference is deducted from that soldier's Time Units at the beginning of the turn.

There's probably a list that says how much each item weighs on a site somewhere, if not this site. But keep in mind that the weapon AND the clip weights are combined for a loaded weapon. So the Rifle weighs 8, and the clip is 3. When empty, the Rifle is 8, but when it's loaded, it'll weigh 11.

There's an item weight table on the wiki.

Have a look at the quick reference table. 30-ish Strength is generally a good strength level for the most common weapons like the heavy plasma or laser rifle and three small items.

The rocket launcher in particular needs to be exactly 42 if you want to pack four large rockets as well and not hit encumbrance penalties. Quite the answer to life, the universe and everything, isn't it? ;) In general, 40 is a good number to hit for as you can start carrying a considerable amount at that point, and an even start throwing high explosives about a fair distance.

If you carry more weight and run around does your strength stat improve directly?

Can you imporve your strength stat directly?

If so I believe laser pistols and copses have the highest "density".

The answer to both questions is no. You can only improve Strength by performing one of the primary skills: Firing Accuracy, Psi Skill, Reactions and Melee (stunning aliens with the Stun Rod). ;)

The only reason that I know about the weights is from a program called UFO Hack 1.0, or something like that. It allows you to edit the items and their weights.

EDIT: Time to expand on all of this...

In the past, I had edited the items so they all weighed 1.

When I changed them back, I put all 1 by 1 items back at 3, except the Motion Scanner, which I put as 2. I screwed up! XD

Oh so thats it? Hmmm... I use to only give my guys HPs with a magazine, and nothing else. Their strength would not go up at all when they killed an alien unless they were carrying loads of crap on them. I started giving all my guys 1 HP plus a extra mag, 1 electroflare, 1 prox. nade, and 1 HE. I noticed the strength on the stats of my guys going up now dramatically everytime they get a kill. Especially the ones carrying the Blaster Launcher with 6 Blaster Bombs. I always thought as long as they get a kill with all that crap they are carrying, the strength stats will go up or is that wrong?

Purposefully loading a soldier down with tons of equipment to the brink of encumbering him doesn't give him a bigger increase in improvement at the end of a mission. The only way to improve Strength is to shoot at an alien (either normally or via reaction fire), stunning or using psi. Doesn't matter how many times you do these actions, the improvement will not go higher than the limit. However, this limit is greater for fresh-meat rookies than it is for soldiers who have been on a few missions already. So a brand new rookie will probably see big increases to Strength initially, but as time goes on, the increase lowers. That may be the reason. ;)

If weight does matter the items that you can bring to a battle with the most density are laser pistols. After that any corpse (except floaters) is more dense.

When I start a game, or recruit soldiers, the first thing I do is go to the soldiers screen and rename all my soldiers (firstname or lastname) <StrXX>.

For example Adam Walters with Str of 27 would become Adam <Str27>

Schlevatov Rowan with Str 35 would become Rowan <Str35>

It takes just a moment to redo the str score when they become a squaddie and after that I only check every few missions. I check anyway, as I like seeing how my guys/gals are improving. It really helps.

Would it be cool to have an application that could rename your soldiers as you like, according to theirs stats, after everymission.

There is, it's called xcomutils, though you have to take into account that there's a limit of characters for the name, I don't know how many, I kind of have in mind it's 13 but could be a few more.

Xocmutils also do other things, like correcting the room connectivity bug, solving the difficulty bug that made all levels be actually beginner level and other goodies including a few other bug fixes.

Yes, I know about XcomUtil, but I would prefer a Win Based App that will allow me to "do" some stuff after/before Missions... I love the "captured Alien" research help add from xcomutil, but I would also wish to increase the randomness of missions, beyond just adding new maps...

I've been considering doing something similar to the OP by creating a Txt file listing all of my soldiers, their kills, their missions, their rank, and some of their stats. This would allow me to keep track of how many soldiers I go through in a single game and also give me a tally of how many aliens I've killed and get "all time highs" for alien kills and certain stats.
