Heh, he's just saying a lot of the ground work has already been done. Much of what's there is analysis gathered together by lots of folks, be it from paper/pen, calculators, spreadsheets. Pretty much the works. Everything from lost engineering time (from space requirements), to the value of the exotic material used in the production, the money spent on maintaining the number of workshops/living quarters at that base, etc.

 

Of course, no matter how in depth playes will go, it often boils down to either the Craft Laser Cannon and craft Fusion Ball Launcher being the most profitable items to build. This was true even before players decided to be more thorough about it. ;)

 

The FBL is better than the laser cannon if and only if you build one at a time. For some odd reason, with the FBL, the first item in the build doesn't require any exotic resources. For any builds larger than that, the laser cannon is better.

 

Early on before the craft laser cannon is available, the motion scanner can nab you a pretty tidy profit too.
