[dipstick]
Are we going to have an access lift like the original? So we have to build from it etc, or can we have unlinked facilities, or are we going to have corridors pre-built, and you simply add your facilities to them? Just a thought. Albino Crow
The $64,000,000 dollar question. Hmm. It was kind of annoying in the original game that you had to build next to existing facilities, but it does make sense on some level. It kind of puts a cap on how much you could build at once, even if you did somehow have the funds for it. So I guess in some way that keeps the game at a balance. It's really only a problem in the beginning of the game, I think, where you could only build a few things from the start with a new base (Not your first automatic one). In other words, I'm fine either way the design of it goes.
Breunor
I remember another thread discussing the use of cheap corridors/hallways to connect facilities, which also provides chokepoints for defense. IMO the main base is totally underground, with just the occasional hatch to allow a base defense to fire or something like that. The access lift provides the main access to the rest of the base, so you have to dig into the bedrock from there. One of the ideas tossed around was more than 1 level of facilities, that would be a nice feature to have. Imagine 3 levels of workshops, labs, and barracks, all accessable from a 3 story tall lift/stair/elevator system.

Albino Crow
It'd be like the dreaded port attacks from TFTD. Oh, how I loathe them. I was going to mention multiple levels, but in a way that would hinder the use for more bases if you could make a huge gargantuan one. Well, hinder is too strong of a word. It'd make the primary use for having other bases, increased detection.
