Base Attacks

You know those sporadic base attack events which occur when usually one organisation sends a pair of hovercars to attack another base normally being repelled by 1 hoverbike, 2 hovercars a Valkyrie or possibly a Skyhawk... have you ever seen the attackers win??? Im guessing never seeing as those odds are an imposssibilty.

What I want to do is help the attackers by destroying the defenders vehicles however for some strange reason for me they dont seem to attack each other to destroy bases in my game where I am at the stage of using Skyhawks and above.....

So has anyone else tried, it would be interesting to see what the attackers do and how the defenders retaliate.

Although in Manual Control mode (select one of your vehicles and press M) you can fire at the vehicle ports(the tubes they enter/exit buildings from), and if you get lucky, you'll destroy it. If this happens, it cannot be used until it is repaired. Fun to get a bunch of vehicles, pause the game, spread their shots among all of the vehicle ports, and then resume the game, watching the building become helpless before it can launch any craft :D

Not so. A building with trashed vehicle ports will simply have craft come out of the ground. It can actually be a problem, since instead of them trickling out of that one spot, they'll be coming out all at once, all over the place.

It takes a few game minutes before a building will spawn more defenders, but there are an unlimited supply.

I've seen once a battle, when a lucky attackers's missile have razed almost whole slum building, killing many defenders's vehicles and gates they were emerging from. I don't remember, though how this all ened.

Has anyone ever lost a base to a base raid on an XCOM base? If so, did you lose to the aliens or an org?

Let's see, if I remember correctly, the game just says XCom (insert noun) by Y, and the base is lost to you forever. Nothing exciting, but mighty annoying on the easiest difficulty level if it happens repeatedly.

How about a base raid when they storm your base? Ever lose a base-defence mission? I lost my first base-defence mission in the beginning of the original XCOM1 way back when. I sweated bullets back then. And what's the difference between "storming" and "raiding"? I see the message bar say "Megapol stormed by X" or "Psyke raided by Y". Anyone know the difference?

This is new:

Late game after I've knocked out the alien standing fleet in the alien dimension. I decided not to knock out their weekly new fleet to see what would happen. I'm playing a very long game (I want to see how high my troops can improve without editors). I have 25 Annihilators and 30 Retaliators, so alien attacks are NOT a problem. :-) But building the shields for those ships, yeeeeeesh!

Anyway, this "week" in my current game (which has been quirky from the beginning), the alien rammed in with two motherships and two battleships to assault one of my bases. Anyone ever seen that before? 4 capital ships like that, instead of the more standard mothership, battleship, bomber and escort?

Of course, I scrambled the entire fleet, which knocked even this group out of the sky, but I did a double-take when I saw the four capital ships show up. What's the worst alien fleet assault you've ever seen?

As I said, this game has been odd. The gangs and the cult make strangely intelligent base raids, as do the aliens, rushing through security stations to engage XCOM agents helter-skelter in the hallways. Early on, I lost several scientists and engineers on such raids. Now the aliens drop overspawns regularly, which is odd, because I'd only ever seen one, and I tend to play long games, too.

I still remember the first time I played XCOM1 and survived. I figured Cydonia was going to be some horrendously large super-base, so I maxed out on troops, equipped them all with everything, had HWPs up the Yalu River, had more than 2 dozen Avengers. I thought it would be all-out total war. Then I learned I could only take one Avenger. :-( I had played for MONTHS building up that force...

I wonder if that would've been the Apocalypse mission that often happens later in the game where UFOs come in force and attack various selected targets around the city?

It's been a while, but even I feel that it's not usual that you get more than a pair of capital ships at a time. How long did you wait after you stopped your regular sweeps of the alien dimension? You never get more than 4 or 5 UFOs (if probes are generated) per week, so I'm wondering if it was beyond that.

Overspawn drops on the other hand are random, so it can happen often, or never at all.

That sounds like the worst base attack in history! An overspawn PLUS a base raid? They took out your only base? Yeeeesh!

My Secondary (research/factory) base was attacked once with no Agents just scientists (around 20-30, I don't exactly remember) at the base and one Security station. I lost about 5 scientists and several were wounded. I sent them to the security station but not all of them reached it but the attackers (Psyke) have fled after a lot of their units have died. It was a lucky situation. Another time, near the endgame I've lost my primary base with all my agents (except 2 guards at the other bases of course) and scientists in it by one single Disruptor bomb or beam (I don't remember exactly which one) from a Battleship. The base was a slum of course. It was because I have divided my fleet between the Escorts and the Battleship and it got too close and I was watching the other battle more closely since an Escort is so hard to shoot down. I admit I had to reload the situation and concetrated more on the Battleship since I could not afford to virtually start the game anew in that late stage. This was the battle that I realized that how useful stasis bomb really is. Not only does it provide a stationary target, but the paralized ship cannot fire back! So 2 Retaliators with one Statis bomb launcher each made it possible that the Battleship hardly ever moved or fired after mine got in firing range.
