SND - USELESS - The Music For Xenocide

abstract

Recommended Posts

I've been involved in several music competitions and just as a sample i'm including highly compressed .mp3 files i've composed, let me know the kind of sound you're looking for in this game. All the samples are of different genres, and should give you a pretty good idea of what i am capable of, although my compositional and technical skills have advanced quite a bit since any of these were created.

Bare in mind that these are highly compressed and are only samples of my abilities, the actual CD tracks are CD quality. I do realize there is quite a bit of instrumental guitar soloing on these tracks, only because they are competition pieces, if and when i write a music score it will not include quite so much tangent lead guitar, and will be primarily catch phrase oriented.

Please listen to them in this order:

Encosmica

War Machine

Red horizon

Hurricane

DS(Desert Surreal)

Retaliation

Lights in the Fog

Listed from most applicable to our cause to the least. Give me feedback on the style of music that would best suit the game, as i was planning on composing an original totally new complete music score.

-thanks alot

I've asked this of all the music guys; what's your background?

I'm just gonna write as I listen so it might be somewhat incoherant.

DischordDS: Mode IV sounds so spanish to me. Was the bass live too; I assume the drums were from a machine. I hear the chorus in there, what do you have pedals or rackmount, and what other effects?

DisChordEnCosmica: okay you got reverb too, and was the flanging right near the end?

DisChordHuricane: as far as I can tell, no compressor, I'm impressed!

DisChordLightsInTheFog: is that a volume peddle or just the nob? Echo too, is that built into the reverb unit or separate?

DisChordRedHorizon: the very beginning is simillar to anouther one. Don't get me wrong though, it's a nice arrangement.

DisChordRetakiation: I LOVE low heavy bass!

DisChordWarMachine: WAH PEDDLE!!!! You da man!!!!!

Okay, you totally can play. In fact I'm all depressed now since I haven't touched my guitar in years. :crying:

Oh, well when my sons old enough I will pass on the art.

Eventually we should all have a style meeting. If there is a desire for a rock style I think you can handle it in spades. Personally though I like the bass to be busier, Gedy Lee, all the way. Could we hear some efforts in other styles too though.

Didnt think you'd be too impressed by my classical or spanish compositions i've done : ), considering the purpose of the comps. I've got alot of stuff i'm working on, i'll upload it to you when i'm done, i havent concentrated on strictly video game music in a while, but i'm sure what ever you want i can do it for you exactly as you ask, and you're right we should have a meeting about this, what ever is decided in the meeting i'll stick to, btw, thanks alot man : )

Okay challenge:

* lets have a symphonic kind of piece.

* a techno one.

* something nine-inch-nails-ish

* a style of your choice but without the GIT lead guitar licks!

Well, i'll start by saying that i make a living with my music. I've really been looking for a break for a long time, and i think that this game might just be the break i've been looking for. As far as music is concerned, i play all the instruments except those with reeds. I can play strings, brass, keys, orchestral percussion(i was in the percussion ensamble at clarion university), trap set percussion, I favor guitar because i feel it is the most expressive musical instrument, I've run synths before(mainly the Korg X-3), i read and write traditional music notation. I can program .wav file modifiers in C++ and use those utilities for effects. For a living I teach guitar lessons at Spotts Music Center in Dubois Pennsylvania. I use Sonar and Cakewalk, I know quite a bit about MIDI, i have great equipment, not to mention a studio at my disposal. I have my associate's degree in Entertainment production with ellective studies in business from dubois business college, i graduated with honors. The degree focusses primarily on the design process of entertainment and the production of traditional 2D and 3D art, digital 2D and 3D art, and multimedia. I know several computer programming languages, including C++, some assembler, POV-ray script language, MAX script language, i've worked with flash and director. I have worked with game engines, Lithtech as well as creating my own. As soon as i get a new power supply i can hook up my good machine, and send you samples of everything i have done. I wish i could just take out the hard-drive but it uses ntfs and this machine is fat32 with winme on it. As far back as i can remember i've been involved in playing some kind of music, i've been in several rock bands and school bands and choral ensambles. Just let me know what you need done and it will be done exceptionally.

Wow. Excellent, just wonderful. I love how every song manages to sound so different with such a "limited" amount of different instruments. :) 'Retaliation' is probably my favourite of the bunch.

This style might not fit all that well in an X-Com game, but I'd be VERY interested in hearing something made exclusively for the remake from you. :)

Well that's a nice Resume (WE CAN"T PAY YOU!) ;P

I don't have perfect pitch but my relative pitch is good, so I'm gonna call the "Modal Tonic" of DS "E", okay?

Yeah you fool me with E-F thing and I think I hear the G# in there, but I missed the F# completely! Heard a lot of accidentals though.

There might be a way around style differences, perhaps every race can have a music style associated with it. There would have to be a genric tune to start battlescape but as soon as the first alien is sighted then the racial music can be played.

Oh, and in the challenge list can you add a "Limp Bizkit" style too.
