Light Levels

Recommended Posts

The one thing that grated on me about X-com is that Powered armour and flying suits didn't increase light levels more than plain eyesight. I mean where is the logic in creating a suit of armour made from an alien compound, powered by an element not native to our planet without even jerry rigging a torch onto the helmet? That said could powered armours increase ambient light levels, but only in front of the wearer?

May be it was intended to implement vision bonuses by creators - look at Power Suit and Flying Suit heads.

One eye is much bigger - may be it because of embedded targeting system? I always think that that big eye means something.

I'm pretty sure there's a comic down in fanart which explains the design of the power suit. ;)

What about night vision and/or infrared built into the helmet? That technology is soon coming if not already here, it would seem odd that it couldnt be implemented into a soldier's power armour. It would eliminate having to bring flares for everyone to use. =b

Moreover, it would be nice to have all useful things in explicit way. Besides, gadgets could be upgraded or damaged. Communication device / local positioning system, HUD, sensors, optics, flashlight...

If all works good, operative can shoot at other chap's target without real line of sight. If radio unit fails... he should resort to voice or sign communication (possibly hindered) to have any basic coordination of actions with rest of team.

Of course, nothing prevents team from taking few spare items (remember Stilgar... http://smailiki.nm.ru/style3/sty007.gif) and/or make an attempt in field repair (of course if someone have proper skill and repair kit).

Powered armors just can drag more payload and can have more specialized slots, but there's nothing that cannot be used as portable standalone item or on HWP.

Not that it was big problem, but those things have their own limitations anyway. It's better to have choice whether to use normal optics, light-amplifiers or flares, for different situations.

The same with night vision as standalone items and built-in flares. Essentially it's just old question of equipment management...
