you mean those lightning-generator thingies? but why? plasma weaponry is much more effective, if you ask me. of course, it would be a nice graphical effect, but not really practical as a weapon, because of very low accuracy (with electric currents always seeking the path of least resistance).

I could understand its use as a defensive installation: step close, be fried.

oh, and once you have proper armor, the electricity would just dissipate along it and into the ground. :)

Just wear rubber boots. If the lightning can't ground through you, it won't zap you.

Tesla was a superweapon of sorts that was designed to send an extremely powerful lightning beam (yes, it is a form of plasma) over massive distances. The main interest in it is that Nikoli was working with lightning actually crossing those distances

now, that was typed for no reason, other than to explain it better. It wasn't made for hand held usage, it was designed for a long range weapon.

Exo, rubber boots won't block a lightning strike

mmmm... then, perhaps aliens may use it in base defense... maybe against avengers (as we use plasma and fussion balls)

And about the power... well that`s a quite relative to the voltage and charge (amount of electricity) that the lighting may have. Of course, with our current energy options lightning is not very strong, but imagine a weapon of that kind powered by elerium...

A weapon that uses electrical charges couldnt be used against an aircraft as the aricraft is not grounded. And for a gun of this nature to work properly whatever your shooting at has to be closer to the barrel than you are, or else the gun will just shoot you. so it would be a great idea for a close rage weapon, have something like a lightning sword or suck, but it would be extremely ineffective as a long range weapon.

I'm afraid that you're all a little out of date when it comes to modern electrical weaponry.

The electrical charge from a tesla coil follows the path of least resistance, right? That's why tasers work with such precision - they send a wire to the destination, and that acts as the path of least resistance.

In the modern world, we can use lasers on many interesting wavelengths to many interesting effects. One usage is that a particular frequency in the UV spectrum can ionize the water vapor in the air with relative ease. A stream of ions through the air happens to be an excellent path of least resistance. This allows you to have an easily directable tesla coil, or a wireless taser, whichever you wish to call it.

These are known as electrolasers. They probably wouldn't be effective as sniper weapons in real life, but when it comes to the distances being rendered in a tactical strategy game, their range should be fine.

Hmm it would seem that would be a very probably explaniation for a laser weapon. It would be one where it usus a high powered laser to light a target, mayhaps doing a bit of initial damage as well, and then sending a small emectric current at an extremely high voltage to shock the target. Almost like a laser stun gun. . .that would be awsome.

Ok, then it would be a human-alien weapon... see, that weapon would be available to reseach, after researching elerium and heavy laser. Would be a stunner weapon and, as based on laser tecnology, it wouldn´t have limited ammo, but with less (60) stunt damage compared to small launcher. So what about it?

I was working on a weaponset for ufo2k that had a steampunk feel, but lost interest. the tesla weapons were to be inaccurate with a stun effect, and most of the weapons had a reference to an inventor. swemmelwise was the inventor of anesthetic, and teslas ultimate weapon was to be the peace ray. Perkins invented refrigerators, Sturgon invented electromagnets. didn't get much farther than this though.
