Wikipedia uses a black-listing system (which, by itself, it useless unless updated constantly) and in addition there is a vigilent force of users and administrators who revert changes of Vandals and Bots ASAP

I've been searching the Internet lately for this matter, and I've found a "general discussion" page here: http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?WikiSpam

Not that useful, but at least it has some nice info

What was really interesting was THIS: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:ConfirmEdit

We are using the mediawiki software, aren't we?

Last but not least: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Combating_spam :D

I imagine MSM already knows about that, so I really don't know what else we could do :/

Btw, what was the problem with the latest mediawiki update?

Yes we are using Mediawiki, and I would love any of the options to be used, preferably confirm edit + blacklist

Got response from Mindstormmaster, the version we have is not new enough.

If anyone of you volunteer to upgrade it we can give you console access to the server to do the upgrade. Anyone willing to give it a try? BTW, you can add a captcha to the main login page (simple .php script for it) to make it even harder.

Greetings

I'd be willing to give it a try, but I want to look what all is envolved so i don't screw anything up..

1 do we have a backup (you knew know what can happen in upgrading)

2 what version do we currently have?

Mindstormmaster we will do a backup before giving you access to the server and the docs.projectxenocide.com site will be down for the time being while you do the update. Information regarding the current setup: http://docs.projectxenocide.com/index.php/Special:Version

Let me know and I will tell mindstormmaster to contact you with the login information.

Greetings

I mean:

Admin access can be arranged, who volunteer to mantain the blacklist?

And there are 2 stable and 1 experimental anti-spam extentions in mediawiki, one of which is the captcha extention. So, how do you know how to maintain the blacklist? I didn't see anything on their site. The admin will just "ban" the misbehaving user? If that's all, well +1 more had (/me) won't hurt

Ok well the wiki is up and running, I don't know what it did to the database but it looks like most of the pages are messed up.. insted of trying to restore the database (as it would need to be updated again) I am going to see if MSM can add the backup in a directory and I will manually edit every page this way the database will be good to go....

Ok... here we go

The old working wiki is now at http://docs.projectxenocide.com/oldwiki/index.php/Main_Page

Are new 1.10.1 wiki which is outdated is at http://docs.projectxenocide.com/index.php/Main_Page

database changes are too much to just upgrade, I will be manually editing pages on the new one and pasting everything from the old in there. If anyone would like to help out just in the change "Put updated to current"

after this is complete i will give the people who applied earlier permissions to ban people ect. I already tested on a bot it works great.

Finally someone to admin the wiki! Good thing the xeno logo was placed instead of the ugly flower, I whined about it for months :P Maybe now you can change the colouring to something more fitting to the PX theme :)

I'm going to go into mysql and just delete 80 percent of the users... if I delete someone who uses it, just register really quick...

kafros, next to peoples names who edit stuff should be a block button.. also if you click on their name.. in the bottom left where the special pages is should now show up a block user option

I will try but my priority right now ill be to get this 100 percent how we had it before, clean the users, impliment security etc.. if you happen to stumble upon a skin before i get around to that let me know and ill up it.

Deleted around 200 accounts, this was a script that was done, so if you no longer have an account please recreate one.

Edit - there is no more history with the new wiki, deleted all old, deleted recent changes etc.. This will be a clean slate

btw how do we ban users?

You're currently a bureaucrat- you have the power to change people's user rights group. You have to promote yourself to a sysop in the Special:User rights management page. Sysops have the power to ban, protect, etc. from the bottom of the Special page.

Edit- never mind, I promoted you. ;)

Added spam blacklist.. we won't need to worry about updating it links directly to wikimedia's

edit works great

Spam protection filter

From Project Xenocide Documentation

The page you wanted to save was blocked by the spam filter. This is probably caused by a link to an external site.

The following text is what triggered our spam filter: http://www.adultchat

Whew, after some initial confusion, I've restored all the pages.

Edit- some of the texts in the CTD:Asset_List still have garbage characters in lieu of these characters: ' " ... -

I think these have to do with MS Word's use of different codes and are unrelated to the wiki update. These will probably have to be hand-edited.

I guess the "2.1 I have a heck of a video card (at the time of writing this, that could mean GeForce FX6800), but I'm still getting a refresh rate of only 60 or 75 Fps." section needs updating, although I'm not sure how... Surely the OpenGL part should be removed, and I think XNA provides a constant framerate of 60FPS, so I guess it doesn't fit at all Edited by kafros

Some have said that it is the notorious OpenGL Defect. Well, it is not a defect, really. Microsoft had thought, "Why do we need to have higher frame rates than what the monitor can handle?" This is called Vertical Synchronization (VSync for short).

As a result, the video card will wait until the monitor needs refreshing. That is why you won't have better frame rates- your video card is wasting time waiting for VSync. Turning off VSync is only useful and recommended if the actual bottleneck for the frame rate is the CPU and not the GPU.

If you are already getting 60Hz, don't worry about it because turning off the VSync introduces some other visual artifacts (defects) caused by the video card feeding to the frame buffer memory and the monitor feeding from it so instead of a complete frame, a mix of the new frame and the last one is sent to the monitor.

It has been reported that some people playing fast paced FPS do have visual problems, headaches, etc, because of the VSync default introduced by WinXP. Even though it can be turned off, you shouldn't play FPS games with that low VSync speeds. Try to set your monitor VSync as high as it can handle.

DISCLAIMER: We are not responsible if you set the VSync frequency too high and you damage or destroy your monitor. Read the monitor's manual. It will tell you what the maximum safe VSync frequency for your monitor is.

It seems it wasn't. It isn't the part "Are you using OpenGL or DirectX?", that one is correct

The Problem is still the same (no higher FPS than 60 FPS, on slower Systems the framerate drops below this, so I don't see see a reason to remove this. Ok, We could theoretically remove the first few words about OpenGL, if you want to, please, be my guest, but then again, defending OpenGL a little bit and dealing with old myths is not a bad thing, is it? :)
