Media

Recommended Posts

This idea might collide with the basic gameplay of X-COM... but why isn't there any media anywere?

Think about it, as soon as the U.S decides to wage war somewhere, the media are the first to arrive. So, why can't we have media in X-COM?

You could have several of the big channel networks, BCC, CNN, FOX in the game. Every time you go on mission, you can choose to bring a repoter and camera man from the network of you choice. These would be under your control (or maybe not) as they take in the action of the battlefield. This would naturally generate HUGE ratings for the TV companies, therefore they would be very competitive in trying to get their own war correnspondents on your missions. After every mission you would get a cash bonus from whatever channel you allowed to tag along. The bonus would depend on how close the camera man got to the action, how many alien kills he/she got on film and if any of them got hurt or killed. If that would happend, the company would not be very pleased, and may choose to stop their crew from following you on missions. Ther could also be independant crews (if all the channels hates you) that could give you extra cash, but less good pictures. What the camera man picks up could then be used as replays (as I think Demios suggested) in the game, and could saved to the harddrive.

All this boils down to a PR rating that shows what the general pubic thinks of you. If you are succesful in a lot of missions, and you have it on tape, the public would love you. And pro-alien groups would hate you even more. And vice versa.

Media could broadcast live, or not live. If they are live, you'll get more cash, but you better pray that you don't screw up. If they are not broadcasting live, and something goes wrong, well.... media people are always expendable :P .

If you don't allow the media to come on your missions, the public might become suspicious. "What are they hiding from us?". This would affect the amount of funding in general.

So, what do you think?

definitely an interesting idea. Perhaps you have to try to keep things secret and avoid media contact, (or steal their tapes?)

Definitely v2 tho.

In case you haven't spotted this elsewhere, v1 is x-com 1 polished and annoying things ironed out. Once that is nailed we can review all of the other great ideas we have aquired and decide on a feature list for v2.

An interesting thought that could definatley be shaped into something fun and useful somewhere down the line. There are so many facets that will be doable after v1 or v2 that I think we all are overwhelmed at the possibility. However, and I've never played it, I hear that what ruined Apoc was the overcomplexity. Of course I'm just as guilty as you with my brainstorming :hammer: (see some of my posts, LOL!!) and I LOVE hearing your ideas....keep em coming!

Also, love the new SOCOM model...but are you gonna make one with more accessories like a scope, laser sight, extended clip, etc?

I just wanted to ask a quick question...is this project going to be mod friendly...if it is you don't even need to worry about all the suggestions going around for v2 and later...they could just create their own mod themselves...this has probably been covered b4 but I couldn't find it... ^_^

It will as modable as posible, thats because we want to finish a preliminary version of the game first, and then polish all that... If we dont do that there is a huge risk that Xenocide will be never finished, and as risk averse as we are, we wont want that...

Actually, if we have media I would manifest it in the X-Net (No imbedded people). If V1.0 UFOpaedia is going to more-or-less be like the game then, yep, v1.0+ for that.

hmmmm, alien terror missions, civilians getting killed or saved. suurrreeee, xcom is so secret... i think its a very stupid idea that xcom is supposed to be a 'secret' organization. here is something to think about, what about the surviving civies at terror sights? how would the government shut them up or cover it up? "Oh, the aliens? those were just caused by swamp gas.' 'Oh, you ask about the men with the big rifles and shooty things? oh, that was just swamp gas too.

Edit: holy jabesus, i forgot to give my opinion about media because it matters to fellow xcom people so much, so here it is.

i actually think it is a cool idea to add media. but i think there is a meger possibility that if we use real media stations they might get bein on our case yo. so, on that note i say we should use things close to them, but not exactly. and the public would love/hate you depending on how you do on the missions. and if you do really well there are chances of packed countries possibly coming back to you since they realize that you may win. and yeah, the over complexity is a bit tough in xcom apoc, but its still cool i always look foward to the battlescape battles.

I'd see media coverage as one of the ways you lose. If you lose terror sites more then you win, and you let alien bases stay, and many DEETECTED UFOs are not intercepted, then media will find all about it, and worldwide panic, and the govermentsasre angry, and aliens go massacring......and screaming! argh! they are comming! its doomsday! help!

eh... i got a little caried away...

as for apoc, i don't have an idea why you cannot attack the UFO motherships, the triangle ones that the UFOs come from. Why is that?

I like the idea of adding some media. Maybe it could just be newspaper clippings based on major events (terror sights for one) those would be easy to randomly generate right?

Obviously, its a V2ish thing though.

:whatwhat: Please dont talk about Apoc, i havent played it yet and im still trying to get it working. ^_^ At least put big Apoc Spoiler Warnings in.
