Finally! Apocalypse Works!

okay, i posted a reply somewhere.

but i thought people would find it hard to find it. (huh?)

anyway, after 6 years of not playing Apocalypse because of the stupid sleeping chamber crash, i'm finally back to playing it.

i think Micah will post the fix on the website.

but if you want it now, you can get it!

http://www.xcomufo.com/apocmaps.zip

download and extract to the apoc maps directory and you're good to go!

anyway, does the teleporter work in real time? i can't seem to find it. i'm already on the sixth alien building (not yet researched) but i still don't have it.

by the way, when i say it works, i mean it works under my os. (98se, me)

i don't like 2k and xp pro just seems impractical to use on a dos based game.

if, however, you are using those systems, it's probably best if you switched back to 98se (the most reliable). or try dual-(multi-)boot.

(and credit should go to Micah ofcourse. i just linked a file in his site.)

VISIT IT! SPREAD THE WORD THAT XCOM GAMERS STILL EXIST!

maybe Sid Meier will create the next XCOM game (the fourth on my list, anyway) which will blow us all away.

and apoc real time rocks, play a while before you judge it!

i've used turn-based on 1 and 2, but on 3 real time is the best!

It is obvious from the equipment included in apoc that it was not designed to be played in turn based format. Yes, is the answer to your question about teleporters, they work very well in real time. If you haven't seen them yet, i'm not really sure what to tell you. Personally, I never had an issue when playing Apoc. I was on a 450mhz p2, 128mb ram, 10gb hd, voodoo2 video card at that time. XP presents it's own set of problems when running the game, but I found the easiest solution (that I already knew how to do) to dual boot.

For some reason I doubt that any more x-com games will be released (make it several reasons: 1) no x-com game has been released in at least two years, 2) x-com: ufo defense was the only x-com game that was ever considered "amazing", 3) the last 3 x-com projects undertaken have been cancelled, 4) it has become an obscure title after Microprose has gone through its 3rd buyout, 5) there is very little large-scale demand for turn based strategy games....everything is realtime (which means that if another x-com did come out, it would be geared towards real time....take a look at X-Com Genesis), 6) it is not considered a profitable title, though because it is also one of the most highly regarded games of all time by many computer gamers it will never be released to freeware, 7) the last x-com title to successfully make it through development was X-com enforcer, a little known (i mean that not many people played it) and low budget game with no storyline and no marketing campaign -- meaning it flopped; prior to that you have interceptor....another flop (i got it for $4 brand new 6 months after release); apoc was considered cool, but never really took root, and despite the large fan base that TFTD has it is considered by most to be the worst in the "true" x-com series of games, 8) no one at microprose cares about x-com...they have other games that have done well since x-com and i don't think they can reproduce that magic that came with the game....) Those are the major reasons I don't think another x-com title will be released in the near future (one more: there aren't any currently in development...) Just be thankful for the original and check out Xenocide's progress frequently...(or if you want to be nastalgic, play laser squad....the inspiration for x-com)

Heh, I assume you mean by Microprose. And of course, this is even more true because Microprose doesn't even own the rights to X-Com anymore.

If you've glanced at any of the forums you'll see that a new version of X-Com is indeed being made, and it's under construction by our die hard designers even as I write this post. We'll try not to let you down. ;)
