Right OK, time to begin. believe it or not I actually started this once before last week, I had a forum post all prepared for the pre-prep stage, then I played my first tactical mission. Turns out the game was on superhuman (I swear I picked 3, not 5) and I lost everyone, to floaters, its actually rather embarrassing, I underestimated just home much harder superhuman is, its surprising how much more difficult just a little bit more alien armour makes the early missions. But that's an alternate reality that no longer exists, we now begin again.

In the end I decided that this game will be played on 3> Veteran, To make it easier for me this is going to be done in two ways, The geoscape logs of XCOM high commander fudge dragon. These will involve pictures and text and will be written as I play, tactical missions will simply be listed using the report that you get at the end of them. However for those that want more detail, I will record the action of a tactical mission as I play it as a tactical log, which I will release after the main log. This just makes things easier and also fun for me in tactical. You just get too many critical screen shot worthy moments in tactical for me to get em all, and remember what is going on. I did intend to subtitle this with dialog from the characters but I cant find a free way of subtitleing a movie. So you're gonna have to make do with a bit of banter before and after the mission.

Anyway, let us begin.

Log of XCOM High Commander Fudge Dragon, 01.01.1999 12:00PM GMT

Today has been hectic to say the least. When normally I would be home in the UK with my family I have found myself sat in a cold damp poorly maintained base in the Alps.

http://img30.imageshack.us/img30/9388/geoscape000.th.png

Let me tell you how that came to be. Midnight new years morning a black car pulls up outside my house and a pair of men looking just like the men in black tell be to get in the car, and hand me a folder bearing the seal of the council of nations. They told me it would explain everything. And in a way it did.

It explained that the nations of the world had been engaged in a silent and top secret effort to make contact with or stop aliens that had been visiting our planet and making abductions and cattle mutilations for some time. However due to each countries radar coverage and national borders on the off chance that a UFO was encountered there was nothing that they could do about it. After failing so completely apart they have decided to come together and fund the XCOM project. Apparently my time in the British army as a lieutenant was noticed as the UK put my name forward for project leader. Something about my psych profile showing appropriate tendencies. The other nations agreed and now I'm XCOM high commander. We still have all the same technical limitations as the individual nations, in fact we have less overall coverage as we currently only have one base. Our only advantage is that the nations of the world, even those not directly funding the XCOM project have agreed to let us pass unhindered over national borders, even Russia is abord.

This brings us back to the present. Although not funding the project Switzerland provided the base, its a perfect location of a secret paramilitary organisation, high in the Alps but the layout is less than idea.

http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/153/geoscape001.th.png

I did some tactical projections and if the base was ever attacked we would be crushed from three different directions. So to rectify this I set about ordering the groundwork that would allow us to reconfigure the base, within our budget of course. I've also given the order to insulated the base and install air-con.

http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/9859/geoscape002.th.png

Next I decided to tour the facilities.

First I visited the lab in the base, the council has provided us with ten scientists but will will soon need more. Still after talking with the boffins I was told their were three projects they could potentially work on.

http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/8827/geoscape003.th.png

The adaptation of lasers for military use, The development of a compact motion sensor perfect for the battlefield or the combination of various medical tools and drugs into one hand-held device that can be used by anyone. I told them to concentrate on lasers, these aliens are ahead of us technologically, I want to close the gap.

Next I visited the hangers, we had two Interceptors armed a Stingray short ranged air to air missile and light automatic cannon each. I ordered the cannon on interceptor one swapped out with a Avalance long range heavy air to air missile launcher that I found in storage. We also have one 14 man Skyranger heavy transport craft.

http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/1622/geoscape004.th.png

Next I visited the barracks to meet our recruits.

Firstly here is my report from the base physicians.

http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/8015/geoscape005.th.png

And now here is everyone else's.

http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/4307/geoscape006.th.png

'N' Is a bit of an enigma, he has combat experience as a grenadier from somewhere, but all his background checks wont tell us were.

http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/9504/geoscape007.th.png

Next we have Harkov, Once again no background given and heavy weapons experience.

http://img30.imageshack.us/img30/5328/geoscape008.th.png

Eledhel, No former combat experience, no background.

http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/4425/geoscape009.th.png

Next we Jenny, again no listed combat experience, with my skills a bit rusty the first operation is looking like trial by fire.

http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/1023/geoscape011.th.png

Finally, I was beginning to think that there was a fault with the database, Scrogdog. Nationality American, former combat experience in the Delta-force counter terrorism team. He served as a demoliton expert with rifle training. Discharged on grounds of bloodlust following loss of family during Stoneham indecent. There was a footnote on his file stating that it is suspected that the Stoneham indecent was aliens and their is a fair chance that he's worked that out. The way I see it he has the possibility of being a liability, but in the event of alien infiltration he's a man we know we can trust.

http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/4411/geoscape012.th.png

Finally we have one last person, Zombie, born of a German\American union. Apparently he's a bit of a night person, and also a pyrotechnic. With a tendency to prank people. All I'll note is this could be interesting.

http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/8698/geoscape013.th.png

Finally I received word that two more soldiers were en-route to our base, they'd been delayed due to unforeseen weather patterns. I know their names are SmaSh and Bucket-san but I wont know more until they arrive and we run the background check.

As my last act of the morning I set about drafting a list of equipment for a 10 man squad using the roles I planned to assign people. I also made a point of hiring another 20 scientists to boost the brains in the lab slightly. I couldn't quite buy everything as we ran out of space in stores, this will be rectified shortly.

http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/637/geoscape015.th.png

Now we wait for any radar contact with our uninvited... 'Guests' so we can deliver our... 'Hospitality'

Log of XCOM High Commander Fudge Dragon, 07.01.1999 12:00PM GMT

Over the last few days a number of things happened. First the agents that were delayed reaching us arrived

http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/3166/geoscape020.th.png

SmaSh, no data of any kind available.

http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/3020/geoscape021.th.png

Bucket-san, fire support and rifle training, no background on record and has expressed an desire to fight the aliens with no armour, which is a good thing as we have no armour at this point.

Next the new scientists arrived, just in time to help the original ten finish their research into military level lasers.

http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/7752/geoscape022.th.png

We still couldn't use them as the prototype is the size of a small car, so they set to work on making the technology more manageable.

Next one of my more interesting purchases arrived. Its a robotic minitank, which can be remote controlled but is currently running on a basic AI, search and destroy package. I'm gonna use it to fill the Skyranger. All squads that we hire from now on will be ten men and a tank.

http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/9031/geoscape023.th.png

Next the lads in the lab showed me a working prototype for a laser pistol, It's slightly less accurate than our current variety but not noticeable so. It also showed marked increase in power, as it completely disintegrated the test target in the range. What is truly staggering however is just how many shots you can fire with the thing in a short length of time, It's quite a marvel. The boys in the lab have also started compiling an encyclopaedia of everything we know, find out or develop. They've christened it the UFOpedia. Here's the page for the laser pistol.

http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/2773/geoscape024.th.png

Next I told the boys to work on adapting a rifle.

http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/7757/geoscape025.th.png

Before taking my first of many trips down the engineering to commission the construction of laser pistols to replace our current pistols. Unfortunately we are not aloud to use the prototype in battle due to council of nation regulations, something about it not having a safety.

Log of XCOM High Commander Fudge Dragon 10.01.1999 5:30AM GMT

At midday yesterday radar teams detected another UFO.

http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/8581/geoscape027.th.png

The Interceptor reached it in the early hours of the morning, but as it was currently over water, and we want to see what we are up against I ordered Interceptor One to tail it at a safe distance.

http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/9332/geoscape028.th.png

Ten minutes later it was back over land and I ordered Interceptor One to engage, we even got a visual on the enemy craft but as we fired the first shot it sped away. This is alarming that their UFOs can outrun our Interception craft but I suppose that it to be expected

http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/9190/geoscape029.th.png

At 5:15 the UFO touched down in the British Isles. I've ordered all agents to the Skyranger and I'm running to join them as I dictate this. We're going to try to catch them on the ground.

http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/2349/geoscape030.th.png

Wish us luck.

Fudge Dragon: Right is everyone here.

All: Yes sir.

Fudge Dragon: And the Tank is aboard. Does anyone here know how to fly, The council of nations didn't give us any sky-ranger pilots.

Tank: Beep

Fudge Dragon: The tank can fly the Skyranger!

Tank: Beep

Fudge Dragon: Well that wasn't in the user guide, Get us airborne then, we're going to the crash site of UFO 2.

Tank: Beep-Beep-Beeep

Fudge Dragon: I assume your are all familiar with the Role equipment assignments, as I will now announce your roles for the coming engagement.

Fudge Dragon: "N", Demolitions

"N": I can work with that.

Fudge Dragon: Good. Scrogdog, Trooper

Scrogdog: Hmm

Fudge Dragon: Zombie, Scout.

Zombie: Aww I wanted suppression.

Fudge Dragon: Maybe at a later date, I'm not trusting you with fire until you have a little bit more combat experience, and I like my shoes. Harkov.

Harkov: Yes?

Fudge Dragon: Fire Support. Eledhel, Scout. Mr Maniac, Scout. ShaSh, Scout. Bucket-san, Trooper.

Bucket-san: Does that have grenades sir.

Fudge Dragon: Yes, you've got grenades. Finally Jenny, you're a trooper.

"N": What role are you sir.

Fudge Dragon: I'm operating as fire support. Now Harkov, get on the radio to base, find out if the UFO is still on the ground.

Harkov: This is Rookie Harkov to XCOM Alps, Requesting status of UFO 2. Ok, Its still on the ground sir.

Fudge Dragon: ETA to target.

Tank: Beep-Beep

Fudge Dragon: *Groan* We have got to get a human pilot. Arm up people, lets let these aliens know that they're not welcome on earth.

Anyway, I continue

Tactical Log recording Continues

"N": Haha, take that aliens, the. earth. is. OURS.

Scrogdog: Is something the matter sir.

Fudge Dragon: I'm promoting you to field sergeant, active immediately.

Scrogdog: I don't think that's the problem sir.

Fudge Dragon: No. Our first successful contact with the aliens, the shoot on sight, no warning. Not even a war-cry. We don't know where they are coming from or what they want from earth. But that's not what's bothering me.

Scrogdog: Then what is.

Fudge Dragon. Now that we have recovered a UFO, how do we get it back to base. It's bigger than the Skyranger.

Scrogdog: Ah...

Jenny: We could always break down the thing with the emergency Skyranger maintenance tools. Take the obviously alien stuff like the consoles and the reactor back in the Skyranger and then ship the remaining pieces back by land.

Fudge Dragon: Good Plan. Jenny, go round up the men and the tools. Scrogdog, you organise the breakup operation. I'll go pull some strings, get us a fleet of lorries. As a jumble of componants it can be mistaken as an airbus shipment into France.

Well the mission was a success, we neutralised the aliens and recovered an intact UFO. Unfortunately its not intact any more due to the logistics problems of getting it back to base. I'm going to have a real think about how we manage this in the long run. I've also ordered all members of the mission team to spend some time in the simulator. I want a human pilot for the Skyranger.

My first action on returning to base was to sell some of the alien loot to the council for additional funding, they even took the corpses for a 20000 bounty. I kept one of each object for research purposes as well as all the metal and alien fuel as these are consumables and will probaly be valuable later.

One after-battle thought is to get everyone to develop chronic kneeling syndrome - at least for our pistol chaps. :D Jenny did well thanks to that.

Yea, I frequently forget to kneel. Its a simple thing but it significantly seems to raise hit chance at the start. I will admit I sometimes make a concious choice not to. I've lost more rookies than I can count (and some veterans as well.) to kneel induced alien reaction fire.

Scrogdog and Bucket-san: Yes Sir.

I took a number of risks that mission. Most of them payed off. I thought that throwing a grenade would give Maniac the greatest chance of survival, as it would use the least number of his TUs giving him time to get out of there. Unfortunately that alien obviously had all of its TUs.

Oh one more thing. Is there a problem with the forums at the minute. I notice that post counts have frozen. Elhedel is on 0 posts dispite the fact that he signed up. I've noticed it with a number of other people as well. Namely me, as I have posted a number of times in this tread, and I'm still on 5 posts like I was when I started.

Post count incrementation is turned off in the Saved Games and Missions subforums as well as all the Technical Support subforums. I can understand why this would have been the case for Technical Support but not here. Ah well. I'll see if I can't persuade Micah to do a little admin work around here again. ;)

The mission does indeed cut off at 15 minutes, whereas the master file seems to be 24 mins long. It would appear one of three things happened.

1. Imageshack lost connection and so truncated the file

2. Imageshack automatically truncates files at 15 minutes

3. Imageshack was unable to meet the 50MB video target and so truncated the file.

Which of these it was I do not know. I'll do some poking around.

EDIT: Both parts of the tactical mission is now available.

Go the tank! Talk about taking a generous pounding for the troops during deployment! I'm also really glad that rocket didn't fire. Shooting off to the side of the mid or top the ramp with rockets could have had very unpredictable results.

By the way, I notice you drop the level when walk troops off the Skyranger. If you're not going to move them under the plane, you can save a click be not dropping the level - as you did getting Zombie to rush over to the ship when Mr. Maniac fell.

Yea, the tank is always man of the match. I find them more vital on night missions than flares.

I've always found the movement a bit... Unpredictable. Troops frequently get quite confused getting of the skyranger, so I always drop the level when the Skyranger is involved.. I can see what I'm clicking easier as well. From what I can gather there is a big NO when it comes to moving off the the ship. Never try to move under the ship from on it. The men walk to the end of the ship. Leave it by one square and then enter again and sit either on or next to the equipment pile.

Casualties in the line of duty

Mr Maniac

Well Mr Maniac has fallen. He bravely breached the UFO but the aliens were ready for him. I've sent his body back to the council of nations, so they can return it to any family he may have.

After this task was done I corrected an administrative error on my part. I incorrectly believed I had ordered the extra equipment loaded which included the electro-flares but this was not the case. I've given the order now. They are aboard.

http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/9388/geoscape000.th.png

Next I hired a replacement soldier for our loss. Hopefully he or she can replace Maniac.

http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/153/geoscape001.th.png

We're not sure how this happened, I'm suspecting the council has some technology they haven't told us about, but they've covered their tracks well. well mosses there aren't any openings par-say but I'm sure the aliens will create one at some point. I'm also going to rotate squad and equipment assignments at the start of each month. Give everyone a chance not to get shot. If I could however direct you to the same thread as Akritedes did as people who don't fill out a council of funding nations form tend not to get heavy weapons insurance. (Read. end up as scouts.)

Now the tactical mission. When you get to the files I've left a surprise.

Tactical Log recording beginsBucket-san: We've been circling Siberia all day sir. Whatever caused those reports are long gone now.

Fudge Dragon: I hate to admit that we let some get away but I'm inclined to agree. Turn round and head for home.

Bucket-san: Yes Sir.

Mr Maniac: Sir, I've got radar on the radio. They've got a small blip on Iceland.

Fudge Dragon: Bucket-san fuel status.

Bucket-san: Half a tank sir. We could possibly make it.

Fudge Dragon: Maniac, tell HQ to send Interceptor One to keep an eye on our guests, Bucket-san, take us to Iceland.

Maniac and Bucket-san: Yes Sir.

Fudge Dragon: It's going to be a long night.

Tactical Recording with Commanders Commentary (Part 1|Part 2)

SmaSh rounded the corner and came face to face with one of the Gray aliens. He quickly lifted his pistol but before he could fire, there were three quick bursts of laser fire and the alien fell to the ground a hole through its back reaching its heart. Elhedel stood calmly on the other side of the room, pistol held levelly at the now dead alien.

SmaSh: Thanks.

Elhedel: No problem. Shall I check out the engine room too.

SmaSh: No I'll go. Your a kill up on me and I can't have that.

SmaSh: SmaSh to Dragon. The UFO is clear. We've won Sir.

Fudge Dragon: Good. Get to work on breaking this thing up. Then we can all go to bed.

Scrogdog Sergeant > Captain

Elhedel Rookie > Sergeant

SmaSh Rookie > Sergeant

Mr Maniac II Rookie > Squaddie

That went well, very well indeed. There were a few hairy moments out there but we pulled through with no casualties. For excellent orders and timely commands I am promoting Scrogdog to Field Captain. His field rank now surpasses mine, but I don't see that as a problem, we both command in different places, and different ways.

I have also promoted Elhedel and SmaSh to Sergeants, for valor in the line of duty. Hopefully their example will encourage others to act the same way. If it doesn't they can always yell at them.

Finally I have promoted Maniac to Squaddie for proving himself at least as capable as he was before he died. I think we can say he has avenged himself.

Ugh now we sleep. We've been up all day. Don't wake me unless the aliens decide to destroy a major city.

Well that will probaly be it for this week. I'll edit the videos in as they finish uploading. Tell me what you think of my commantry. It was hard work as I am working with free software and rubbish recording equipment, but it was kind of fun, so I may do it again.

Well i think i did great for my first skyranger exit of the game!

3 kills is rather a nice score i should say!

On a side note i personally like autoshot alot!

So could you let Eledhel use that when available and appropriate?

Yea OK, I'll see what I can do. What I use tends to depend on TU's and range. You fired the final shots of the mission on autoshot. That's gotta count for something.

Right, I've recorded the next part, I'm now writing it up and editing it for the commentary. It was a right disaster. I don't want to ruin it but by a combination of tactical errors and the worst deployment in the universe we lost 4 men. One of you has died before.

I'll leave it at that. Upload in the morning.

I like the commentary... keep it up! :)

Having a problem with Part 2 of the video with commentary from your link. Imageshack says this:

The video is currently being processed by one of our servers and will be available shortly. Please wait and it will begin playing automatically once it is ready

I waited a good long while at different times of the day but it still says that. Hmmm. ;)

Sounds like bad news for the team. Just remember: Zombie is always undead. LOL

I just don't understand it. The file is fine. But I've uploaded it again and its doing it again.

Good to hear you like the commentary though. Its not a particularly easy process. The hardest part is lining the commentary up with the audio and video on the dosbox recording. It was slightly easier with the next recording I've done as I lead in with a starting recoding in 5. The first time round I hadn't considered it and was lining it up based on the audible clicks of my mouse. It was hard work.

I've bundled together and sent off the excess corpses and gear for a nice tech bounty from the council

http://img36.imageshack.us/img36/9388/geoscape000.th.png

The boys in the lab are desperate to get their hands on a live alien, but we currently have no where to contain one. I've ordered the construction of an alien containment. I also used the tech bounty to start the next part of my plan for making the base more defenceable. I've ordered the construction of two new hangers in the north of the base and ordered the old living quarters pulled down, as the men have long since moved into the new ones.

We've picked up another blip. But its far larger than anything so far encountered. The aliens must be up to something. I'm sending Interceptor Two to take a look.

The alien vessel landed before the Interceptor could reach it, the worrying thing is that it has landed in population center. The Russian city of Novosibirsk and we are already getting reports of civilian deaths. We are heading there now in the hope of preventing further deaths.

We failed, I failed. The aliens have stepped up their plans, we faced weaponry against which there was no apparent defence, an alien tank, shaped in a mockery of our classic view of a flying saucer. Maybe they've used them as scouts in the past. Maybe that's why the image is so iconic throughout the world. Whatever the case I saw those things shrug off the effect of multiple armour piercing hits, even a high explosive. We downed one but were overwhelmed. We were surrounded and gunned down as we left the ship. The image of those devices will haunt me forever.

There is no point wallowing in the past however. I've put in an order for the equipment we lost, both from the council and from the lads in engineering.

Now I need to figure out how to explain our failure to the council. They are going to be very interested in the attack.

The men in the lab have finished analysing the samples of alien metal. Apparently its a super-strong alloy that we can replicate.

http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/4307/geoscape006.th.png

They also had some ideas for a suit of armour, and given our last mission I told them we needed it yesterday. Apparently they already have some ideas so it shouldn't take too long.

Well. It was going to happen eventually. I was called before the council of funding nations for what they called our monthly project review. They were on the whole happy with our performance so far, rating it as Good. Russia however was not so complementary, calling attention to our blunder in Novosibirsk. They've lowered their funding contribution. I fail to see how that will ever help anyone, but that's how this review works.

I think having commentary in the videos lets the viewers get a rough idea of what you're doing. By the way, with the first lot of commentaries, was the first part meant to have the commentary start in the middle of the battle?

No. Most Certainly not. Imageshack has been a bit screwy on that account. My masters are round the right way at any rate.

I'll see what I can do about correcting it.

EDIT: OK I think I've figured out whats going on. For some reason when I upload the part 2 with commentary it is overriding part 1. I imagine the names must be too similar. I'll fix it later.

EDIT2: Changed the naming on my master files and now they seem to upload properly with no problems.

I really like the commentary on the assaults! I do have a problem with part one of the terror mission, when i try to open it i get part one of the previous mission.

I am looking forward to the explanation on how the fallen soldiers are revived as their bodies are MIA.

Well i have seen the first part without commentary now but i must say the LZ was not only hot it was a damn right firing squad! 5 Cyberdisks surrounding the LZ is quite a challenge!

The video problem should be fixed now. Let me know if there are any more problems. It was another case of my naming not being unique on the videos.

I'll leave you to speculate on the bodies, but you'll probably be disappointed with the route I take.

I'm just sitting here laughing. Poor N hasn't gotten to shoot at anything all game. Then the perfect job for him rolls around (massed Cyberdiscs) and he never even makes it out of the Skyranger. :P

The problem with cyberdisks is their insane reactions. I don't think I could have got N out of the vessel, fired a rocket, and made it back inside (as there were other targets about) in one turn. During the alien turn he would have been shot and died.

The other problem was of course the cyberdisks were effectively in 3 groups. 2 ground floor behind the skyranger. 2 ground floor beside the shops and 1 second floor behind the skyranger. Explosions only hit one floor.

I was always curious about that, actually. Because whenever I Recon by High Explosive a building, the "ceiling" for that floor (and thus the floor for the next level up) is blown out. I've never put it to a direct test and blown something up a level directly under me, though.

A Hi-Explosive exploding on the ground level of a barn would leave a free-floating roof with the upper level walls. All units and objects on the upper level should theoretically drop down without any harm. Gravity for tiles wasn't introduced as of yet. ;)
