There are 40 unit slots you can use in a base defense mission (in any mission, to be more precise). Tanks take 4 slots each. Tanks also appear before soldiers so they will use up most of your soldier space. In that aspect having too many tanks can be very detrimental to base defense.

 

On the plus side, tanks always start with a full load of ammo for base defense even if there is insufficient ammo in storage - and you get to keep what's left over. This makes the fusion hovertank the most ideal HWP for base defense. This applies to a lesser extent to the rocket tank.

 

Beyond that, all the usual tank pros and cons apply.

Only 10 tanks will spawn in a base defense mission. While this sounds like a lot, it really isn't. Tanks aren't nearly as mobile as soldiers are, and this presents a problem when you need to flush out the alien hiding in that small room in your hangar. Aliens will also enter single-width doors to get upstairs and tanks can't go there either. It's best to use 0-4 tanks in a base defense mission as that still gives you plenty of room for your soldiers to show up. :)

 

The best tank is obviously the Fusion Hovertank as it carries 8 mini-blaster bombs and you get a free load of ammo when the mission starts. It doesn't do as much damage as a blaster bomb, but I like that because the area you are fighting in is smaller. It's perfectly suited. Honorable mention goes to the Plasma Hovertank or the Laser tank. I personally like having the Laser Tank around for a base defense mission because you can't do much flying in your base anyway. ;)
