The Earth, No Tilt?

I justed check the progressive release out installed everything seemed alright until, I noticed Antarctica is in darkness all year round, this is wrong. And the problem is because the earth is not on a tilt like the real earth.

 

Our real earth's axis is tilted at an angle of 23.5 degrees, this means that different parts of the globe receive varying amounts of sunlight during the year.

 

 

if the real Earth did not tilt, countries near the poles would be cold and dark all year round. If it tilted too much, the seasons would be very extreme – like on the planet Uranus.

 

The further north or south you live in the world, the more pronounced the seasons are. For example, in the far north, Alaska has sunshine 24 hours a day during their summertime. and I don't think I noticed this in the game. actually to be honest with you I didn't even look at what month it was on (the seasons in the game) but I'm guessing you guys didn't address this.

 

Also I don't see the sun in the back ground or the other planets.

 

I think it just makes it much more better playing a game when it seems much more realistic.

 

 

I hope you guys fix this on the final release, it shouldn't be hard. its not rocket science.

The camera is fixed on a certain point on the earth, so it's not possible to see the tilt physically, but I agree: northern and southern countries should get light too. Unles the bounciing becomes too distracting, of course.

 

It might be tough to fix, but I'm not a programmer.

If I remember correctly, the game does change the lightning depending on the season, so different parts of the globe receive different amounts of sunlight during the year. I am installing the last PR to check on that as I don't remember it clearly.

 

Also I don't see the sun in the back ground or the other planets.

And you most likely won't see the sun on any further releases.

 

I hope you guys fix this on the final release, it shouldn't be hard. its not rocket science.

It's not rocket science, but there are more important things to do, and since all our programmers (and the rest of the team) work, study, or both, they'll do what they have time to. I prefer to have a working game than an incomplete one with the sun on the background.

yeah, the sun changes possition, but it's a rather weird pattern that doesn't take tilt into account (or?). But yes, it does change. Edited by mikker

Then you didn't look at alaska.

Whats weird about it??? Northern hemisphere summer (that is june 21) sun is above 23 degree north, Northern hemisphere winter (that is 21 december) sun is above 23 degree south.

 

And I see the poles in light in their respective season.

The current model implemented is that we tilt the earth by 23.7 degrees. This results in the northern part of nordic countries being in shadow. Yes. Thats how it's supposed to be.

In reality, there are probably some athmospheric effects that bend the light a little. I can make the parameter changeable from the config-file, then everybody can play with it. Nevertheless, the current value is more physically correct.

Only other limitation we currently have is that the change of the sun's angle is currently linear not a sine-wave. But this doesn't affect the extremes, rather the speed of change in angle.

 

About the improvement in the newest release, nobody has touched that code, so I'm really stumped there.

 

What kind of graphics card are you using, maybe it's also shader-related.

I'm using Radeon 9600XT. I just found the light to go more north then before, but it could just be me?

Hmmm, that shader wasn't really touched. so it shouldn't be it. When I find the time, I'll make that value changeable (patch hint for applications....), then we can play with it a little.
